It appears some Jarlings are getting a little too comfortable and complacent in this little world we call society. I can't help but notice Jar hasn't had an evil 3 hour looping "Yeaah oooh Yeaah" esque anxiety and horror inducing ending sequence in a good while, perhaps a return to this will help put these Jarlings in their place and ruffle them up a little, let them know that the Joker is in town, baby.

My opinion as a queer person is that Jim is right and that bigotry isn't a black or white thing (no pun intended). Someone can do something homophobic without being a capital H homophobe. It's worth remembering that, while you might not personally be a homophobe, by making certain jokes and can contribute to the overall culture of homophobia within society, which can make queer people within your audience feel uncomfortable and make genuine homophobes feel comfortable expressing their homophobia. Obviously you can't please everyone all the time and I'm not trying to police what you can or cant say but I think the world would be a better place if every now and again people in the words of Jim "check them selves". Hope this doesn't come across like I'm trying to stop you guys from making jokes or anything I'm just trying to give you a broader perspective. Anyway love the yogs, Game on.

@Funkeyman Ye Funky idk if this is the place to focus. IDK if a society where the kids go hungry and the grandparents freeze is going to be open to these things. Even if they are simply factual. I also think us marginalised people would prefer to eat and be housed first; the jokes and prejudice are hurtful but I'm more worried about the direct material harm. Like i don't think people who are overworked and worried about their futures are very susceptible to being told that others have it worse in a way they're contributing too. Having the truth on your side is not in itself convincing; how is someone working 70 hours a week going to have the time to study the wider societal implications of their jokes? How are you going to explain this to a person who can't feed their children and have it be important to them? How are you going to overturn the wider pervasive prejudice of our society without addressing the fact that these prejudices are only so prevalent because of the wider superstructure of liberalist capitalism?
@FunkeymanАй бұрын
@@fightthepowerman are you a scarecrow maker because you can construct a straw man like a fucking professional. Where did I say that people saying off colour jokes is a more important issue than people dying. It's possible to think more than one thing is a problem at a time. I didn't suggest that all our effort should be focused on just this one thing. I even said in my comment I'm not trying to stop them from telling jokes. All I was saying is that what people say has an effect and that sometimes we should reflect on that.

Marine biologist jarling here, About the sponge sex debate- First of all, sponges are filter feeding animals(there are carnivorous ones), very ancient and probably the first to branch off the evolutionary tree(first to depart from the last common ancestor of all of the animals). Sponges (most of them, in biology there are always exceptions) can reproduce both sexualy and asexualy. In the asexual method they can fragment themselves and new sponges grow out of the older sponge pieces. In the sexual method, although sponges don't have sexual organs, most of the sponges are hermaphrodites, they produce both sperms and eggs and when time comes they release them into the water. A fertilized egg then turns into a larva and when it encounters a proper place to settle it transforms into a tiny sponge that grows over time. Also about the seahorse pregnancy- the female transfers eggs into a sort of fertilization pouch, he then carries the fertilized eggs until baby seahorses are fully developed and releases them(they are still tiny). Sponge Sponge boys! Hope this cleared some things out

as a queer lad who has watched for a very long time, the response to the "is it gay?" question did seem quite echo chamber-y. Jim's point on "if someone was in the room would they feel uncomfortable?" was spot on. I think this cast is something I've listened to in order to feel comfort and to wind down and really laugh hard to and feel accepted by the community, to the point that I do look forward to it, and i don't think it's necessarily parasocial to feel that either. just some of the humour has veered towards a reddit-y tone. as much as there isn't any intention planted behind the things you say, it's a little like if someone made the odd comment about something you have personally been largely insecure and guarded about your entire life because if you were to reveal it, you would be ostracized. as much as it's kinda funny, it can feel a little sour, because it kinda feels like the language of the boys i used to know in school who were homophobic, and as much as i know there isn't intention behind it and you aren't homophobic, it still triggers something uncomfortable, and I imagine other people who belong to other marginalized groups who watch feel something similar when even just associative language is used. on the other hand completely, it plays off entirely differently when it is setup transparently as satire - e.g. Always Sunny, which has characters who are incredibly offensive in everything they do, but its set up in such a clear way that there's no need to ask the question "is it homophobic/racist/etc." because the satire is very well presented. I suppose it may also be a matter of, if you don't believe you are being homophobic, and you mean it as satire, are you presenting the satire clearly enough?

You've said it more eloquently than I could have, but yeah, it's not really about the intent, but the connotation of the joke overall. Like (as a pretty much straight guy), would I accept the same joke as 'thats so gay' if it was 'thats so black' or whatever. It's a pretty basic experiment in empathy, but if people feel the NEED to make those kind of jokes, then they need to ask themselves what the actual joke is. Obviously, a learned homophobia (or any kind of bigotry) which i'd say everyone is surrounded with in the school playground, is hard to do a complete 180 on, but I think it would be best for them to reconsider everytime they drop a remark like that because it a) can hurt people you don't intend to and b) put you in very bad company.

in relation to the 'jokes going to far' question. I think it basically comes down to, are you making fun of a perceived victim of the joke or are you making fun of the subject in general. Take always Sunny for example, they did blackface, it wasnt to make fun of people of colour, more poking fun at the subject OF blackface and what sort of people WOULD actually do it, and how ridiculous it is.

Hey guys, straight Jarling here commenting on the discussion on the homoerotic jokes. An example of a joke would be in Episode 6 where one of the cast members said something (can't remember what) and Alex said "You weren't saying that when you were eating my ass last night" and the joke is arguably funny to an extent because of "gay" but it's so goofy and ridiculous that I can't imagine it would come off as homophobic. Another example would be all the joking done after James got his prostate exam. I feel like the line should be decently obvious, and I don't think jokes like that would raise any eyebrows, I think it's just funny. I'm obviously not the best person to discuss this, but it's just my two-cents as someone who's watched a ton of JAR

First-time commenter, day one jar here, and I think Jar Media is infesting my reality with each passing day. A few episodes ago, Jim mentioned how we humans are collectively heading towards one sort of consciousness, both the culture we engage with and the thoughts we have seem to be merging closer than ever, to where the distinction of thought we have between each other is blurring through the internet as a natural gateway for this progression to occur. This reminded me how often I find myself living through the particular "Jar Thought Realm" before I watch an episode, that then exactly recounts the previous moment I just had while watching. What once started off as sharing the same sense of humour and perspectives/interests, then becomes more intimately reflective of the way topics and the dynamic play out all while at a faster rate. So say I think about fat guys and boogies teeth and then bring it up to someone, I put on Jar an hour later and there it is. Someone discusses Killer Croc and what Batman villains would be world leaders, and in no time there it is. Someone discusses the potential in awesomeness of Raven Masters, and there it is, I bring up Dan Hentshel and that particular video you mentioned, and it's become the norm. I ramble on about how great the Elden Ring lore is, and no surprise, Jim thought robs me in the next cast with the same cadence. There are more instances like this than I can go on about, but I digress. Could this be mere coincidence? Is something grander going on? Or has the essence of Jar taken host of the people I encounter and warped my reality to YOUR will!
