7:57 actually, parchment paper has its origins from goat, sheep or lamb skin. There are still some people that create parchment paper from skin, so not to waste the animal that has been slaughtered. It was shaved, cleaned and stretched on a big wooden frame to make it thinner and more usable. The smell would also go somehow away after it dried for a month. It was a common practice in the medieval and ancient times, commonly in ancient greek and Asian regions, as they had no clue about Papyrus (the Egyptians didn’t monopolize the trade of it into western and Asian regions) and it was way more durable and usable as papyrus. Parchment paper is named after the Asian ancient city pergamum. Todays parchment paper that’s used for baking and cooking are of course out of paper, as the industrialization made it possible to include plastics and other ways to make paper more durable, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to eat my delicious cookies with old method parchment paper cuz that would be against several religious and moral positions :) Also realistically it would burn and stink

This is two years old so I’m a bit late but parchment paper is NOT animal skin, nor does it adhere to the old use of the word parchment. I learned this in my art history class literally two days ago so it’s still fresh. Basically, they used to make a sort of “paper” out of animal hide. This was called parchment. Nowadays, what we call parchment paper is just wax paper, not animal skin. I understand how that can be confusing though lol.
