As a career nanny with contracts, I was questioned about not eating lol. They always told me that I was expected to eat with the kids. Generally what the kids were eating. Sometimes they even asked about things I wanted in their home for me to eat. She would buy me a case of my favorite drink.

The landlord story is extra crazy because the boyfriend ends up saying he'd be ok with her being a landlord if she gives him HALF the rent of the tenant while doing NOTHING. So much for him being morally outraged.
@XSemperIdem5

The fact that he moved in with her and conveniently never asked about contributing towards any rent or bills besides food was already showing what kind of person he was. But to then want income from the property on top of living in it for free? He was acting more like the bad landlords so many people hate.

I think we’re forgetting that the horse story is very dependent on where they live, I live in a pretty rural area and horses going around with the people who ride them aren’t uncommon. And showing up in a riding outfit is the equivalent to showing up in a suit or workout gear. As long as a parent is dropping off and picking up their kid on time it shouldn’t matter. Also parents shouldn’t not give their children experiences just because other kids won’t have them. Just a reminder that horses aren’t for the 1% depending on where you live
@cmsbcarneill2591
@cmsbcarneill2591 Жыл бұрын
Was coming here to say the same. As a Canadian with a British mom, it sounds like the UK, very common. Also the statement about the riding gear, something someone owning stables is going to do commonly and it also shows that others at the school are probably aware of their status. She could have said to the girl that it was a birthday/special request only for her daughter, but shouldn't have to explain or give in to tantrums. The other mom and daughter in my opinion were the rude ones.

I grew up in the outskirts of a rather large city but there are still farms and a lot of stables around. One child was occasionally picked up from school by her mother or older sister with two horses. The mother would ride her horse and guide the other and then at school, the child would get on it and ride home. It was always a sight to see but no one was angry, there were a few envious looks but no uproar

This. I grew up in the South in the US. There were a few people who got their kids to school by horse. I will bet those will be memories that child will keep forever. Experiences and bonding are great and that’s a good one. The other child and parent are the problem. At 8 I understood that I wasn’t entitled to anything and everything.

oh i’m a nanny who does some babysitting on the side! i have always been told to help myself to any food in the house. the difference between babysitting and a more “normal” job if that as a babysitter you don’t get a lunch break or anyone to relieve you so you don’t have the opportunity to go buy yourself food. i’ve had nannying contracts that provide me a grocery stipend to keep food at the family’s home. babysitting doesn’t usually call for a contract. when it becomes a regularly scheduled nannying position, there should be a contract to protect all parties involved.

As a mother of 3 kids, whenever we get a trustworthy person to babysit our kids, I will throw everything and the kitchen sink for them to have. I ALWAYS order food for the kids to include the babysitter so it's one less thing for the babysitter to worry about. Some people didn't even want to get paid, but I would pay them in energy drinks or food that they really like, I once even paid in a couple packs of cigarettes (which weren't smoked around the kids). I feel bad for that babysitter

Yeah, I thought it was so weird that that post was tagged as OP being the AH! I truly hate being around crying babies (well, babies in general, tbh), but since I know it bothers me and that babies are almost guaranteed to cry on flights, as an adult I can take responsibility for my own comfort and have a bunch of podcasts queued up. If it's super loud, I have earplugs instead. I doubt I'd even notice a parent singing to their kid - they're obviously gonna be quiet about it, probably even quieter than regular conversation. And no-one thinks people are AHs just for talking on a plane 🙄
@victoriayoung4451

The pony thing is odd but I don't think they are the asshole. Unless stated otherwise in the school rules, you can drop your kid off in or on whatever you like. Is it a bit obnoxious? sure, but it's also not their fault if the other child has not been taught emotional regulation at home. The other kids were clearly ok with it, and excited that they got to see a pony. Also dropping your kid off in riding gear, feels almost a kin to dropping your kid off in yoga clothes. If you're going to go do said activity after, or were doing said activity before, why waste time changing.

For the last story, I was on a plane this weekend with the exact situation described. A mother was quietly singing lullabies to her baby on the plane. Probably 1-2 songs every 45 minutes for 3 hours. The baby did not cry ONCE. At the end of the flight, I was completely happy with the situation because it WORKED. If the baby was crying the whole time also, then it would have been a different story. The small songs were completely appropriate/appreciated given the situation for me at least!!

About the lie about the sister - I find Cristine's reaction strange. There is a huge difference between not wanting to talk about your emotions and to grieve in your own way, and between actively lying to your wife about your sister's death. Even if she is "too emotional", he is an asshole who should not have married someone whose emotional reasoning or apporach he apparently cannot stand. So no, none of the possible root causes explain this behaviour and make it reasonable.
@fueluponpositivity

I see her POV. We don’t have all the details. She is spot on with additional interpersonal issues. Also everyone reacts differently to grief. Depending on her age, the manner of death, him shutting down is totally an appropriate reaction.

I can't fathom the "why did you eat the kids' food?" babysitter one, both from a former babysitter perspective and as a 45-year-old adult. Those kids are in deep, deep trouble with parents like that. I hope the kiddos survive... the babysitter might be one of the few sane influences in their lives, but I wouldn't blame the babysitter if they never want to sit for those parents again.

A babysitter might technically be your employee, but they're also a guest in your home. It's incredibly rude and stingy not to offer them something to eat, especially when they're presumably working for you during dinnertime. Edit: Also, what I think Cristine might be missing when it comes to the dead sister story is that while yes, the subreddit is called Am I the A**hole, what's really being discussed is whether OP is the AH in that particular situation / whether it was an AH thing to do, not necessarily that they're an AH or bad person in general.
@naonao9528
@naonao9528 Жыл бұрын
Babysitting often ignores lots of labor laws like working age, providing breaks and minimum wage. Also there are lots of companies that when providing clients food normally offer some to the employees or provide workers with snacks/meals. Like I've worked in places where meals were served to clients like shelters and if there was leftover food the employees could eat it. It's kinda weird that everyone is glossing over any relationship between the sister and the wife. The wife may also have reason to grieve and the husband is only thinking of himself. Which is understandable, people do dumb things when they're grieving. If my SIL died I'd be sympathetic for my SO and I'd do what I could to be there for them. However, I'd have to mourn the loss of someone who is important to me.
@thenopedetective
@thenopedetective Жыл бұрын
From the OP it sounds like the wife only met the sister a few times. It sounds like 1. He's emotionally distanced about it all, 2. He's trying to manage her reactions because he's annoyed by them, 3. He's lying to her about something significant (thought possibly not very emotional - maybe there were very distant and didn't get along much, OP gave literally no contact even on follow up). Also the whole brother trying to check in but him ignoring calls. The whole thing reads as super avoidant and unhinged, particularly if we compare it to most normal relationships! If he clarified they were estranged it would make a little more sense but still be the AH.

On the first story with the horse, I grew up in a touristy town, beautiful area, that was surrounded by farms and such. Kids came to school on horses all the time. There was even a “drive your tractor to school” day. Also- the mom said that her daughter takes care of the pony before school, and I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t leave a 7 year old to take care of a pony by themselves, that’s probably why the mom often is in horse gear when she drops her off. The mom did nothing wrong, and I didn’t really like how Ben talked about it.

I want to give some context about farm life: imagine waking up at 5 am, feeding and taking care of all the animals on your farm for two hours, and then having to take your kid to school immediately after then. Wearing those farm clothes is similar to wearing your gym clothes out. It’s impractical to say that someone who owns a farm with animals can’t show up to drop their kid off at school in their riding clothes. Especially if that parents works as a trainer/farmer. It’s just part of your daily wardrobe at that point.

For the horse one, I think it's totally fine to let a child ride a horse to school as long as it's safe to do so and doesn't interfere with traffic and so on. The child who threw a fit needs to learn they can't have everything they want, and their parents should be teaching them that. What if a child showed up to school wearing a sweater knitted by their grandmother? If another child threw a tantrum because they can't have one (because, you know, only one exists), should the first child not be allowed to wear the sweater anymore? No. It's ridiculous to expect other people to shelter your kid from seeing anything they can't have.

First story... horse mom was perfectly fine... second mom was a brat and is raising a brat. Lol and Beeyyn riding stuff is fashion. I've literally bought pants from a Swedish horse riding company because they were awesome. I have no horse and I've never even rode one lol. When I was a kid, I was super poor, and if a student road a horse to school, that would have been just a cool day at school. "Hey mom! I got to pet a horse today!" If you're jealous of someone for having a horse, you're the problem. Lol

When I first met my best friend/roomie, neither of us were aware they would be diagnosed as being Highly Sensitive Person. Due to childhood trauma, they are extremely prone to being the caregiver and always wanting to bond by helping me through something. I did not cope in this way so it became overbearing and often felt like I was being babied or smothered so that they could feel useful. It got to the point I wouldn't open up about my feelings because I didn't want to experience it. I appreciate Simply talking about how people cope differently and not everyone wants to to be forced into "talking it out"... But me and said person later became best friends and fully understand each other and what the other person needs. To marry someone and you still refuse to even tell your wife a family member died just to avoid how your wife handles you in your grief just shows the lack of intimacy between them, romantic or not. The wife clearly doesn't know what her husband needs during his grief and he refuses to tell her. If you can't share an experience as important as this, that doesn't bode well to how the rest of the relationship is.

When I was a babysitter when I had to serve dinner, I was allowed to eat some too. Never had a situation where a parent wouldn't let me eat but the parents explicitly said so. Maybe check before ?? But I never thought of that as not being allowed. 😂

I've been on a lot of planes lately due to a month long travel across the US and to Europe. I don't think I would have been able to hear someone softly singing as I barely can hear the attendants trying to give me drink and food. What I COULD hear though was the toddler screaming for 11 hours straight (sat directly behind me) from Munich to Miami and throughout the Miami Airport. Sooth that child for God's sake.

The filming people in public thing I still hate because of how you can even be in the background and not “react” the way the person filming wants and then they post you online everywhere for people to mock and insult. Look at the multiple videos that have gone viral for someone in the background making a face or something, like the girl who filmed herself eating her pancakes in a weird way, and someone in the booth behind her made a face so they did a version where they zoomed in on the person face. People have no concept anymore of others, like it’s scary how much now everyone things everyone else is like npcs and should do what they want to.

Some thoughts on the Christmas lasagna thing! No wonder it's gendered. Holidays are only magical because women are responsible to do all this cooking, hosting, decorating, gift shopping, etc while everyone else gets to rest and enjoy, so I feel like it is comparable with the "bridezilla" term, where the expectations are sooo high on the "matriarch" or the woman in the situation while the patriarch or man sits around and enjoys the holiday season lol or in bridezillas case the importance on the day has been ingrained in girls since birth, whereas its barely mentioned to boys. That's the tradition anyway so I can understand the MIL stress and yes even the lasagna *incident* lol. That doesn't excuse it however and it's good the new partner is standing firm in being treated fairly and kindly, breaking with the unfair tradition and hopefully she won't have to deal with the same expectations going forward! Just want to acknowledge that the people who, yes, don't challenge the so called "monster in law" when she's being overbearing are also at the same time not stepping up to help uphold all the traditions they enjoy and take some of the pressure off and probably still expect those traditions to happen!

The first one is wild. Why should this mother care that other kids weren't taught to behave? She did something to make her kid happy, and the thing she did was harmless. Also maybe she is busy, taking care of horses is very demanding and they do need exercise, taking the pony for a walk and a kid to school at the same time seems like a great idea to me. Also why can't she walk around in her riding gear? Maybe she doesn't have time to change. Ben really have no clue about working with big animals and how time consuming it is. Why so judgmental Ben?

been babysitting for years, and usually if the parents don't want you to eat the food, they specify it. There's no reason for them to be tripping over 2 pieces of Pizza and a bread stick. Also sometimes with younger kids, they won't eat unless the "adult" is eating the same food as them. I think the parents could have been kinder about it and said "in the future please bring your own food or order something for yourself."

Babysitting thing is insane. I was a nanny for 10 years for multiple families with anywhere from 2 to 6 children. I never met a family that didn't expect me to either eat food out of their refrigerator, give myself a portion of whatever we were making for the kids, or made sure That there was enough money if we were ordering food for me to get my own portion. I've even brought my own meals to homes and the parents were always surprised because they said I was welcome to anything in their kitchen, But I have food sensitivity so sometimes it's easier to do it that way. As a result, some of the even more generous families offered to buy and keep food in their house that was specifically okay for me to eat and no one else. That family being upset is a huge red flag.

YES, Italian Americans ABSOLUTELY make lasagna for Christmas! My cousin does it every year since she started hosting. She'll do a lasagna, and some sort of a roast (I think its pot roast). Our mother's would indeed usually do ham, but lasagna on Christmas & the seven fishes on Christmas Eve is A Thing for Italian Americans.
