We had a baby earlier this year and didn’t know if we were having a boy or a girl. We had settled on the name John for a boy. During my pregnancy, my sister’s cat, who had been missing for several months, was found and returned to her. He was also called John. We joked that if we did have a boy, he would be referred to as “John the human”, and the cat would just be John. Seemed fair as he was here first. We thought it would be hilarious. It never came to fruition though as we had a girl. But we were fully prepared for our son to share a name with his aunt’s cat 😂

That's the thing. You can take 5 or 10 minute breaks even if you don't smoke. It's just that smokers have an internal alarm that goes off. Also, the whole outrage over the Barbie movie from the manosphere guys is so sad to see, it shows how lonely and miserable they are, I hope it is a good push for some of those guys to realize how detached they are from reality. Life is all about learning about yourself, having passions/hobbies, being around great people, and feeling comfortable about yourself with all the life experiences you have whether you are a male or female. Hi! I’m just wanted to comment on the app of the first AITA post. At least in Europe there is a relatively known app that works like that which is called Too Good To Go, and I also use it every once in a while to get a cheap dinner if I don’t have a lot of groceries at home. Honestly I really like it, you get about 3 times the value of what you pay (like the post said), and a lot of restaurants, bakeries, and even supermarkets take part in it. The left overs are not food that was left on the plate 😅 it’s just food they had prepared to be sold that day but wasn’t, and since they cannot keep it for the next day, this way it is still not wasted.

My amazing mom chipped away at this year after year! I remember her shoving me to the table when I was little saying things like, "The kids are hungry, time to feed them!" She helped in the kitchen to be kind untilllll a misogynistic comment came from one of the men like "Hurry up women, I'm hungry" usually from my grandpa. Then she was DONE! This made me think of my own mom. She was the daughter of Austrian immigrants, and definitely dealt with/refused to tolerate a lot of scheiße (much of which was sexism) particularly from my grandmother. My grandmother has always given special treatment to all the boys in the family (which was absolutely something she experienced from her own mother growing up), and while my mom didn’t have any sons, I know she wouldn’t have tolerated playing favorites with her kids because one was born male. Hell, she didn’t tolerate any favoritism with her four daughters, when my grandparents helped my oldest sister out financially, my mom advocated for us all to get similar help when we needed it.

About the family where all the women "need" to cook for the men: The hunting example isn't really a fair comparison. The problem in the Reddit Story is not about having to go through an unpleasant or morally objectionable task, it's about allowing yourself to be "put in your place". A man who is forced to go hunting despite moral oppositions would definitely have something to complain about, but no one is going to see him as being lesser than the women in his life because of it. In this situation, where the women are forced to serve the men because they are women and are ostracized if they refuse, it is NOT about the activity of cooking. It's about men believing women should serve them, and it's about those same men punishing any woman who will not accept that role for herself. If the girlfriend goes along with this tradition, the "good first impression" of her will be that she is willing to be subservient to the men who want her to be so. And that is going to last long after the meal is over. I agree with Cristine that the male poster in this situation should go cook with the women to stir things up, and I think he should do so even if his girlfriend doesn't come with him. That would make a statement to the family that he sees women as equals and that he's refusing to go along with sexist traditions any longer. He should also apologize to his girlfriend for trying to make her go along with this in the first place.

@@SavantAudiosurf Yes, that's very true. It's quite possible many of the women in the family are sexist as well. But it's unclear to me if others believe it's wrong but are just unwilling to take a stand. On second thought that could be true of some of the men, but I suspected it more of the women since it's stated that some of them do refuse to cook (the ones who are able to "get away with it").

In India the gender roles are steeped in that it becomes so difficult to untangle from it, however modern you are. I know a lot of my friends who rejected learning cooking or kitchen activities because it felt forced and the same was not expected of boys. When me and my friends moved out, or now living with partners, we did learn cooking, childhood favourites, essentials. It's not that we are not capable of cooking, it's the rejection of the expectation that girls should learn cooking as young as possible but the same is not applied for boys.

Also I have to add sometimes it feels like because women are expected to cook most meals it is more of a chore? Then less time and effort is put in it. Especially if you're also working or/and raising children. While men in my area tend to cook at special occasions or on weekends (like my parents in law). So it is more like a hobby or a flanting moment, hence it is generally nicer. So I feel like where I'm from (nl) it's less a active rejection thing, but rather gender roles still infuencing our daily lives.

That being said, other people spending money frivilously has NOTHING to do with me. If someone wants to go spend $200 on a GUCCI t-shirt, that's on them. It doesn't make me feel any type of way. For that price you could try to be more sustainable, support local small busines or made sure there is less horrendous (child) labour practices slavery. I will 100% judge someone and make that (gently) clear when bought up in conversations. And I have started to someone I was sick of them flaunting their money in front of them and asked them to stop, because money (was, hopefully) a extremely stressful topic and someone bragging infront of you isn't nessecarily conducive for a nice chill atmosfeer. @@mignonhagemeijer3726 someone bragging about their money is different than someone who is just buying a lot of expensive clothes and wearing them. Also, tbh, there are so many evils in the world we accidentally contribute to. From food grown from the hands of exploited workers to living in houses built by companies who turn around and tear more land away from established communities. It's nigh impossible to live a life completely free from harm. Besides, the clothes in Walmart are often made just as unsustainably as the clothes from Gucci. As long as the purchaser gets proper use out of them and gives them a new life when they're done, thats the most I'd ever ask of someone. Personally, I dont like these high-end brands and the "luxury" lifestyle influencers bc of the bullying and harm that tends to accompany it, but if this person isn't engaging in that, then I dont think they're doing anything wrong. I'm not going to heckle someone for buying Prada in the same way I'm not going to heckle someone who eats meat (I'm a vegetarian). We all have different battles we choose to fight. Fast fashion and luxury labels just might not be everyone's battle and that's okay. Life is long and hard. We don't need to make it harder on ourselves.

It's, honestly, no one's business who buys what. I know I don't care what people do with their money. Yeah, there are ethics issues, but pointing that out isn't really going to change anything for most people because we all already know about sweatshops. It's like a vegan forcing their views on other people. Everyone is aware of what animals go through, but if somebody wants a burger, someone yelling at them for being cruel to animals isn't going to do much except make them buy two just to be a d*ck. Back to the story, though. The OP is just jealous and cares way too much about what other people do.

One funny thing that my dad said recently was “your brother suffered from a classic male problem related to their perception of the speed of sound - you tell them something when they are 15 and they hear it at 30” and honestly it’s one of the best lines I’ve heard. Maybe that guy will hear the Barbie movie at 30 😂

My younger brother used to work in a supermarket and got really pissed off at all the smoking breaks that staff would take, so he started taking "crisp breaks", he told his manager he was addicted to crisps and needed to eat multiple packets a day. He would go outside and stand on the other side of the carpark eating a packet of crisps whenever the smokers went out to take a smoke break. Needless to say he got really fed up with crisps as he was consuming way too many packets, but kept doing it out of principle.

I used to smoke and I always said it was unfair. That other people should be allowed the same breaks. 5 or so minutes to stretch, walk songs, check their phones, whatever they want. Just get some fresh air. That's fair for everyone. Cool. You get your little breaks, everyone does. Then again, I also worked on the service industry. And for me, I was only taking smoke breaks if they're was the time to spare. If it was busy and there was money to be made, then you bet on not going anywhere for the next 3 hours of this rush. Cuz above all, I'm trying to get my money. Hell, when it was slammed, i was lucky if I got 3 minutes to pee

For the dinner sharing post, you missed the very important context (that was only in the comments) that SHE WAS LAID UP WITH A BROKEN LEG AND THEY LIVE IN A 4TH FLOOR WALKUP. So she was relying on him 100% to get food for her. And the bodega he offered to go to has a deli counter, but it was closed at that point. Bro was seriously just trying to make a point to his girlfriend who literally couldn't do anything about it.

Another thing I think was missed is that she didn't want to spend anymore money (queue not-so-humble brag about him making more money than her). He kept offering for her to do things that she would have to pay for, and she most likely couldn't afford to go through an app for delivery or whatever. However, she took a risk. I'm the kind of person where, if I took a risk, I would just deal with the consequences. Like, I hate soup with a few exceptions. I would've eaten it anyway. I would've hated it, but that's the chance you take not ordering what you specifically want. That's why I said Everybody Sucks. 😂😂😂

Anytime we go or to eat, if my bf orders something I even MIGHT be interested in, he offers me some. I do the same. Coz we care about each other. I will never understand people who just do these dickhead things to prove points instead of being a good partner. Coz like, don't you care about the person you're dating? And if you don't, either work on yourself, or don't be with that person.

Shes angry for no reason bc she is in her feelings. I get being depressed but at the end of the day you need to be able to be alone bc you wont always have someone there for you. It's not just about doing something you don't want (though it's also weird to force your guest to do something against their will, even more weird to make them do chores lmao), it's about the concept of "because you're a woman you have to do X" that makes it really icky. The leftover food app they are referring to is probably Too Good To Go where businesses post surplus food where the cost to the customer is a third of retail. Often times they are items near their best before date, day old bakery items, or leftovers from the hot/cold counter. Some places are better than others and I would not pick something with less than four stars. Even then, you hope for the best. One time at well known juice place, I got a salad/wrap and a fruit juice while another time to the same location was two large bottles of celery juice. Regarding branded clothes, I choose to go for clothes with no branding to minimal like a small logo. I couldn't care less if someone chooses to be a walking billboard for a certain brand. The most I would do is question someone who complains about not having enough money while spending money on designer/luxury goods.

And it became very important for me to learn and be a self sufficient, full person. That said my (male) s.o. Is a much more talented chef then me. The app that the op in the first story is talking about is called Too Good to Go. I order from there sometimes, and every time I have ordered, their portions have been pretty massive. Definitely not something I could eat by myself in one sitting...OP was definitely just being selfish not sharing with his girlfriend whom he supposedly loves. If he had given half of the BBQ to his gf and had some of her soup, they could've both been satisfied. Edit: in answer to Cristine's question, different businesses sell their food on the app. For grocery stores, it'll be food that is nearing or just slightly past its expiration date so they can't sell it at full price. For restaurants, it'll often be food that they made the day before, and therefore can't sell full price to customers because it's no longer fresh. They can't give away other customers' leftovers 😅I'm pretty sure that's a health violation

I think its important to note, when talking about buying expensive clothes, there's an ethical argument towards buying more expensive things IF the expense comes from properly paying the people who design, manufacture, ship, and sell those items. Buying a cheaper version of something could be just as unethical if you have the option to spend the money on something that is ethically made. Not to say luxury brands aren't also using sweatshops and buying materials from places with horrific working standards, they absolutely are, but buying a specific brand or paying more money to ensure that the person making the garment was paid a liveable, if not thriveable wage is good actually. If you can.
@genthespacewitch
@genthespacewitch 9 ай бұрын
Yeah, there's definitely a big difference between buying high-quality, ethically-sourced clothing that is double or triple the price of, say, Target clothes, and buying something that costs an exorbitant amount simply for being a name brand known for exorbitant prices. One is being conscious of your cost-to-value ratio and wanting to be a responsible consumer, and the other is, like Ben said, merely about the brand. Not that buying Gucci or Prada or whatever is inherently "wrong"; if you honestly like something and you have the money, go for it. But at the same time remember that the value isn't in the quality and that's not what you're paying for.

Agreed! I love to buy designs from small artists with good materials for midline prices. $50 for a skirt with a beautiful artist’s print on it and sustainable materials? Hell yeah. I’ll turn down 5 $10 skirts to save up for the eventual 1 $50 skirt. This is my compromise, and I’m lucky to be able to make these choices.

I've worked in a lot of sorts of restaurants, but usually places that make their own food, they give away the food to the employees or throw it out after a day or two because it won't be "the best quality". Not because it's about to go bad, but because the food is like... A left over you put in the fridge from the day before.

7:11 We actually have apps like that in Toronto too, it's usually unsold food, delivery orders that no one picked up, or extra from batches made. A lot of the bags have expiry times to get them on the apps so they're not selling anything that isn't food safe, it's just a way for restaurants to still make some money off perfectly good food that was otherwise going to be thrown out.

the app regarding the food waste is called Too Good To Go in case anyone's interested! the whole idea of it preventing food waste is that the food leftover at the end of the place's work hours would be thrown out anyways because they can't serve it the next day. so instead of it being thrown out it would be sold at a fraction of the price. i love using it and sometimes you don't luck out but you gotta read the reviews for that mainly because i've overall had a great experience. for example i got a bag from eataly(the italian grocery store here) with $36 worth of breads for $12 and it lasted us a whole month!

Back when my mom was in her early 20s (in the ealry 90s) she was also annoyed that smokers just got a break every hour, so she started going out too. She didn't smoke, but was like well if they get to, then I get to. I think they were surprised but didn't do anything about it, so she just got a break. Also, not to advocate for smoking, but my dad smokes, and he says its actually really good for his work to take a break and walk around. Many times he'll be struggling with a problem and the answer comes to him while taking a break. So, don't smoke, but taking a 5 minute break every hour is actually healthy, especially if you work in a field where you have to do more thinking. But even in other ones that are physical, it just helps regain your strength so you can work more efficiently.

For me, theres a cap on luxury quality vs regular quality. Meaning, i think designer or luxury items can be higher quality but there’s a limit on how much better the quality could be. Coach and coach outlet are my favorite bags. The quality is way better than a target bag but is Louis Vuitton significantly better than coach? I dont know, i cant afford LV but thats my point. There’s a cap to how high quality a product can be while the price can climb higher without improving the quality to justify the price. Overall though, people can spend their money as they please. Just because Im too broke for a LV bag doesnt mean other women cant buy one.
@its_clean
@its_clean 9 ай бұрын
The issue here is how you define "quality". If two handbags are identical- same leather, same stitching, same packaging- but one is made entirely by hand in Italy or Japan, and the other is made mostly by machine in Vietnam or China, would you say there's a difference in quality? In terms of materials themselves, if one shirt is made of regular good quality cotton, and the other is made from ELS cotton that comes only from a specific region in Egypt, does that constitute better quality? I may not really care what kind of cotton is in my shirt, but if there is an objective material difference, does that justify a price increase? It's easy for us all to agree that a plain t-shirt with a tiny Off-White logo is not worth $565 by any stretch of logic. But when it comes to luxury goods overall, it's a lot more nuanced than just luxury=scam or luxury=ego.

I get Ben's thoughts on the cooking thing. People should be able to cook for themselves as just a general life skill. I think more young men cook now because they don't have a wife right away to do it and they want to eat nice meals. But a lot of young women (including myself here, at 33) feel less compelled for whatever reason, and don't want to be responsible for cooking dinner. I only started doing it because I quit my job and wanted to feel useful, and then kept doing it so I could be in control of dinner.

When I heard “bla bla bla” it prompted me to look at the screen and read myself and I’m glad I did. Please just take the couple extra seconds to read the full story. That is all. Or just have Christine do the reading. I don’t understand why he does this. The point Ben brought up about men maybe cooking ‘better’ than women now, I think that’s just because it’s more obvious now, how women would’ve been if they’d had the chance. Before they were forced to cook and they had to be good at it and constantly evolving to keep up appearances. Both in front of men and women, now that they don’t have to do that you have the women who have real interest in cooking doing so and women who don’t, not. Also I think men now have more chances to cook as well, from necessity and from less stereotyped roles. So the numbers are probably just evening out. At least that’s what I think.

I once heard the phrase that women of past generations were ‘enlisted’ into the kitchen. And I can’t get it outta my head. Like, of course men are getting ‘better’ at cooking, they’ve been given the opportunity to learn something that they can enjoy. Whereas for women, not only was being in the kitchen an obligation, but it was an unrelenting one.

in terms of home cooking, i think thats definitely true. however in the professional cooking world, much of it is male-dominated, like many other professionalized hobbies and skillsets (think things that are associated with the home or femininity like art, music, baking, or gardening). prominent chefs are often male, we know many more male painters or male classical composers. even today, many popular cooking channels like josh weissman, josh from the mythical kitchen (tho which gets a pass bc theyve got a way more diverse team), alvin zhou, or babish. i love seeing men (really anyone!) in the home cooking/baking sphere (: anyone who wants to cook, can and should! i certainly have a lot of fun bonding over cooking/baking with my partner ^^

I definitely did mean it in a home cooking sense. All the most famous chefs I know have always been men, another unfair gender disparity there. Not that those make chefs don’t deserve recognition.@@flygon78

@@flygon78yes that patriarchy! Even things that are deemed feminine or submissive in the ideal nuclear home, are still controlled and dominated by men

Well that idea is certainly about a progressive west which does not exist for many….. but the skill and necessity of cooking is not something one sex is inherently better at or evolves to be better at, food also depends on individuals taste.

The clothing one, no one said luxury goods, and to spend a couple hundred pounds between 5 stores means they are probably midrange clothing. It might be branded, but you are not getting Gucci that cheap.

Cristine always gives a sense of genuine "woke-ness" and I respect her a lot for that. There are many people out there (online especially) who present themselves as forward-thinking just for the sake of ... sounding like they are better than everyone else

That being said; it’s also very clear that she’s never worked food service, and sometimes I am very much reminded that despite Ben’s progressiveness, he is definitely a man and was raised as a boy. But I love them showing up as they are! It’s very loving for all involved ❤

The update to the last one was that he stole her Dyson Airwrap (super fancy hair curler that uses warm air rather than a hot metal rod). Those things are super expensive, and I have no idea what he's planning to do with it! The Dyson airwrap was honestly the saddest part of the whole thing

The cigarette breaks would make me so mad when I worked at a restaurant , I was like 19/20 and the rest of my coworkers were middle aged men getting smoke breaks even when we were super busy. I couldn’t even go to the bathroom but god forbid they don’t get to go smoke. I don’t really see why it matters in an office environment though because if they’re not getting their work done the boss will see that and act accordingly. To me it only matters if you’re making it harder for others to get things done if you’re taking a break every 45 mins.

The smoke breaks are so frustrating as a non-smoker. I worked in a kitchen at 17 and was not given a break. Ever. But alllll the servers and busboys and dishwashers who smoked took multiple breaks throughout their shifts. I will never forget being so hot and overwhelmed and needing something from the walk-in fridge. While in there, I took 1 min to calm down and check my phone. The assistant manager walked in, saw me, and pulled me out of the fridge so he could yell at me in front of everyone in the kitchen. It was so degrading, especially considering I worked my butt off and never asked for days off, never complained, never took breaks, etc. That place honestly crushed me. I got my friend a job there and she was treated like an angel and I was treated as second best. I found out right before I quit that she was making significantly more money than me (I started a month before her). She worked hard too but constantly took time off for concerts and other fun teen stuff. I even skipped my prom and other dances so she could go… There was even an old woman who treated me terribly and blatantly told me to my face the only reason I got employee of the month was because I brought them my friend. She would give gifts and things to my friend in front of me, never me. This has been 14 years and it still bothers me… lol

I love thé mystery box service. It’s a matter of food that is made that someone can have. I agree that I prefer ordering food I want, but when I’m broke it’d be so nice to get a cheap meal. Also working in food service there’s so much waste I would have loved to be able to take home or give away.

I don't think the service is available here, but if it was, I'd definitely choose a restaurant where I could, literally, eat anything and everything on the menu. I'm not terribly picky. I'm not a fan of most soups, but I will demolish wonton and egg drop soup. I'm also not a fan of seafood. I think that's it, though. So, if we had the service, I would avoid any restaurants that serve soups, seafood or seafood soup. 😂😂😂

Oh, I've also worked in food service, and we had people come all the time asking for the food we were going to toss out. If a certain manager was working that night, we would double bag it and put it in the dumpster gently. Of course, we would inform the person first so they could decide if it was worth it. The other two managers didn't care, though. Better than wasting it.

I bought this $25 purse on Amazon because it was the right size, color , shape that I liked. Then someone started to gush about me having a designer bag...I guess mine is a knock off. Oh well. Life is strange. 😂 So do they think less of me for owning a knock off or not knowing I had a knock off?😊

On the cooking issue, I agree with Cristine and think Ben is being kind of strange. Just because it's cooking, that doesn't make it not a problem. The situation isn't okay, and the expectations are the problem. Not everyone enjoys cooking.

Second story: the app is called Too Good To Go! Often resturants make batches of food fresh daily & don't refridgerate/freeze the leftovers. This helps them sell the rest of the batch at a discount. I've had good experience with the app: it's usually plenty of food & more than worth what you pay for it. Based on my experience with the app, I would also be suprised by the bag of soups. He is definitely the TA on this one for not sharing with his partner after the unlucky grab bag. 11:28
