Yeah! I started learning the guitar this year, at 38, due to the Covid19. Home office and no more commuting by subway gives me a lot of free time to practice. My teacher says I'm progressing quickly and I'm at lesson "Andante" p. 41-42 by Henrique Pinto. So proud of m'self, for someone soooo uncoordinated... lol! Foo Fighters' songs are my motivators to keep learning new chords and rhythm! And Kiko for his wise advice :) what matters is the drive. Why do you wanna play, you know. I'm 38 and I don't feel old at all!!!

I'm 37. I started when I was 12 but never progressed beyond playing simple power chords (Green Day, Nirvana etc. ). I decided to start again and this time do it right from the get go with a guitar teacher and focusing on techniques and music theory. I've progressed from not being able to play any scales to being able to play the Paul Gilbert exercise at about 100-110bpm 85% clean in not even 2 months. I hope I won't hit a plateau for a long time.

You guys (including Keiko!) are inspiring me for a second wond at guitar. I got my first guitar at 10. I took lessons from 13-14 years old. I quit playing for a long time, because I don't understand theory and I'm not the fastest etc. But I have all of this gear.. and passion. I'm going to give it another go soon. I'm 36 years old now. I would like to get good enough to get a band going in a year or so. I don't know where to start and how to progress. I'm a slow learner when it comes to music.

@@stevenrose6824 Theory isn't actually hard or scary. What's hard is applying it in a musical concept. It's the same as applying language. Learning English is one thing but writing a poem is another right? It's the same for music. But if you are creative it'll come naturally. When I started learning English I never imagined being able to form intelligible sentences. Now look at me lol.

I picked up the guitar when i was 22 years old and i have been playing for over 17 years , it actually depends what kind of playing level you want to achieve technically with the instrument, depends on the genre of your playing. But the short answer to the question at 13:15 is it's never too late to learn the instrument, only set a goal what you like to play and express through the instrument and it will clarify you how much time it would take you to achieve that goal. It's only late when your on the death bed.

You're right. We need to kill the idea that guitar is not important unless you are some improvisational virtuoso. It's really about your own enjoyment and the bonus is if people like it. Too much weight on technique fed by youtube rather than entertainment. Kiko understands this even though he is a technician.

@@SanDimas234 exactly...and anyways, if you think about most bands, many of their best albums were recorded when they had only a few years of playing guitar, so even if you start at 50, by the time you're 60 (provided you dedicate enough time to it), you'll be able to play most stuff from your favorite artists.

Totally agree it is never too late to start learning to play the guitar. All depends what level you want to get to. For example if you want to play Kiko stuff or Paul Gilbert, then you need to have a plan. Get a decent teacher and practice every day. After about 9 to 12 months you and your teacher will know if you got what it takes to get to that level. It could take you 2 to 3 years or 5 years. However if you just want to be able to play classic songs , say chords and sing along to Bruce Springsteen, Beatles, Etc then you will be able to do that quite quickly. Again practice often and consistently with a good teacher or online course you will get there quickly. Finally the reason why it is often said that it is harder to learn something new when you get older is life takes over. By this we mean responsibilities creep in and take over. This could be your job or career, starting a family. Other priorities you may have like going to the gym or doing another hobby. But remember it is not impossible or hard, just depends how you prioritise and dedicate yourself to learning the guitar compared to other things in your life.

6:32 kiko! The question was about the distance to the frets, not the neck, like distance in the x axis, not z. At the start i also used to play in the middle of the space between frets, then i saw a video by brandon acker talking about that and how much better intonation you get by playing near the fret. It took me like a month of exercises to retrain my hands, but its worth it.

I've been only playing for just under a year now and I'm 34, learning to play Guitar is the best decision I've ever made - not only did it fill the void of giving up old hobbies that had become more habbits but I'm also more healthier in body and mind. My family and friends can tell that I've changed alot this year and are incredibly happy for me, I'm also influencing others to seek fulfillment 🔥🤟 Ps. I have 3 little ones at home and they take up alot of my time, I've found a many ways to practice almost everyday so i feel I'm getting better all the time - which is important because it's what makes me come back tomorrow ❤

I too started at the age of around 19-20. I broke my guitar 2 years after I started learning and stopped playing for about 5 years after that. Fast forward from 2013 to 2018, I got myself a new inexpensive guitar (but it was kinda expensive for me because of our currency), few months after that, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and I don't go out much after that except for work, so that means I have a lot of free time. Decided use the free time to relearn the stuffs I used to know and learn new stuffs that I didn't know like basic music theory knowledge. I too had dreams of becoming a professional musician, but now, all I want to do is to just put as much time & effort as I could on the guitar and most importantly to just have fun with the instrument, even if I might not be able to be a professional musician. The advice I could give to Boyle would be, spend more time practicing and don't browse too much social media. Whenever we see a young kid who can play a million times better than us average players on Instagram or KZbin, self doubt would kick in and negativity would feed on them. I'm now 30yo, but this time I won't let my age or anything else stopping me from trying to learn the songs I've been wanting to learn or at least try writing my own stuffs, even if it's simple. I'm more obsessive than ever when it comes to learning about music in general nowadays. If there's an advice I could give to my 22yo self that broke the guitar, I would tell him: "Don't give up just yet, there is still time. And as long as you're willing to put in the effort, you too can make it. Everybody starts from zero and even your heroes struggled at one point." Also, thank you Kiko, for being ever inspiring.

Played piano all my life, and always wanted to play the guitar but my parents had me playing the cello instead. Finally at the age of 29 I got my first acoustic and electric guitars. How I wish I had learned guitar instead of the cello, but all I can do is move forward from here. At least we have access to such inspirational people such as Kiko here!

Your tips and advice are the most down to earth and these tips work with working with yourself, mental health and so. Try to improve daily but dont whip yourself if you skip a day or stumble, instead, congratulate yourself when you pick yourself up and try again. I'm almost 40 now. While I started at around 15 or 16 (i think) I had lost my way of being a guitar player once I started being an adult and having all the responsibilities at I think around the 26/27 age. Started playing again in 2017 age 36 and tried to catch up with the times. Surprised myself that I could still improve to how my playing is now! Still lots and lots to learn, ways to improve and yeah, never too late to pursue your passion! Really love the advice and also Kiko you're an awesome, inspiring and humorous person!!! haha! I definitely agree that learning an instrument isn't that much about age, it's about how much time you can dedicate to learning it. Sure, as a kid your brain (and body) is more elastic which makes learning easier, but that doesn't mean that you can't learn a new skill as an adult. I picked up the guitar at the age of 13 but started practicing properly only at 19 and learning music theory at the age of 23. The piano I started learning at an age of 24. Now I'm 27 and studying music theory and composition at a University.

I have an RG550. It does takes a little to get used to changing strings on it. And you are right, I change one string at a time. They do make a block you can put on the bridge and do all six stings. Set up and tuning is a bear when doing all six at the same time. But that Ibanez is my favorite to play. So versatile.

tip for changing strings w/ a floating trem quickest way.. install locking tuners. Block the trem, do one string at a time, cause it helps keep the trem balanced rather than removing all strings at once.

Oh boy! When I was a teenager I was about 20 years old I started playing the electric guitar, for some reason I stopped playing the guitar between the ages of 15 and 20, I resumed it from 21 to 26 I was in various projects but nothing serious, until now I am 32 years old I'm about to turn 33 and I've been releasing albums on my own for 2 and a half years, for music there is no age it depends on what you want, if it's just fame or money your motivation, maybe you need to think more, art is art. Good luck if you want to follow this path, it is hard but it is worth every moment. Enjoy it, do not compare yourself, the technique does not make one better than the other, but the discourse that is given with the music.

About string change with a floating bridge, the simplest and fastest way is to block the trem withanything that woth damage it, then change the strings, stretch them, tune them, stretch until they're ok. Tune perfectly with the bridge blocked at the correct position, remove the block and adjust with the screws in the back until the lowest string is perfectly tune again. Seems long but can be done in 10 minutes when you have the correct block ;) Thanks again for all the works Kiko.

Acho que essa pergunta de Raziej (06:20) foi em relação ao posicionamento do dedo com relação ao traste. Isso porque muita gente (principalmente quem começa a tocar) posiciona o dedo no meio da casa, ao passo que muitos grandes guitarristas posicionam o dedo quase em cima do traste. Vale dizer, não é exatamente a distância do dedo em relação ao braço, e sim a distância do dedo em relação ao traste (e não no meio da casa).

Hi Kiko, well just want to say thank you for all the effort in all your classes, and workshops, all the tips shared in videos. I've been a fan since the Rebirth album, but actually until I started Guitarhacks 1 year ago I really really noticed I 'm getting better. In one year I see my pinky finger doesn't fly anymore, and I can play songs that before seemed impossible. I think the question about placing your fingers close to the frets asks about why you put your fingers closer to the fret wire instead of in the center between two fret wires. I hope I'm explaining this right. When you put your fingers closer to the fret write you get better tone (that's what I noticed) and bending is easier and sounds cleaner.

Eric Clapton was 13 when he got an acoustic guitar but he found it difficult and therefore lost interest. At 15 he was inspired by the blues and picked up the guitar again and practised hard.

I'm a FOH engineer. When I was touring my pre show ritual was to Brush my teeth, floss and use mouthwash. Don't know how I exactly got on to that but I did. Also to the 19 year old person. Playing music knows no age unless you physically can't play.

I played from 19 to 25 and put it down. Then I picked it back up at the age of 51. The main thing is I have to be more careful about RMD issues with my hand (The tendons in back on hand that lift my fingers from the fretboard develop some pain with certain motions). I can get a lot of play time in per day but I do it over several short sessions.

Bom eu comecei com 13/14 anos, mas fui começar a me importar em aprender direito mesmo apenas alguns anos atrás, lá pelos 30 anos de idade... A questão é, onde vc quer chegar? Se o cara quer se tornar um super guitarrista de alta performance, virtuoso, esse tipo de estilo igual o Kiko, Barbosa, Oziel... fica mais dificil se o cara começar tarde. Mas cada caso é um caso.

I started playing two months ago after 20 years since i sold the guitar i had, i have 42 now, i don´t find it any diferent, i just do it as a hobby, the key for me is ask yourself if yo do it as a hobby or you want to be a professional. If the goal is to be a professional whith the tons of information we have and hours of dedication being constant, i belive these days yo can do it in a few years. Some dacades ago it was much more difficult.

The only downside to starting anything late is that you're gonna have to put in more time, instead of practicing a little on the weekends you're gonna need to do it every day for many hours a day if you wanna catch up to the level of experience and practice you'd have practicing every now and then from the age of say 15

Mas sua cultura, educação e sua capacidade de se adaptar ao ambiente bem diferente do Angra que é o Megadeth. Claro que a banda do talentoso Mustaine teve guitarristas ecléticos e técnicos como Cris Polland com sua levada jazz fusion e Marty Firedman com suas escalas exóticas.
