My issue is to find a roadmap of what to practice. Ive been playing for years but all I do is learn tab music from the internet. I want to learn more theory and improvisation but not sure what to practice to get there.

Do you know any scales? Pentatonic? Natural scales (major or minor)? If you do, you can try to identify all the root notes on your guitar in your favorite tonalities, then the same with all the fifths, then thirds etc. If you don't... The first thing to do in order to learn more about theory is to learn a major scale (tonality of C is easier for comprehension but... E is more "practical" for a guitar player) and learn what is a root note, a fifth, a third etc. Then once you know that you have to learn either the pentatonic scales (major and minor) or the natural minor scale (in the same tonality used for learning major scale) and study the difference in intervals between natural major, pentatonic major, natural minor and pentatonic minor scales. And the difference between natural major and natural minor obviously... This will give you a solid base in theory. Then... Modes are a whole other beast to tackle 🙄.

@@scrappyny7432 Well, I've had various ressources in the 90's (unfortunately I don't remember which books I got them from) but since, I've mainly used Wikipedia pages and videos here on KZbin to increase my knowledge of guitar and music. When it comes to guitar practicing and improving your playing... I highly recommend Kiko's Guitarhacks.com website where you'll find all his training programs and a forum where you can chat with other guitar students (theory is one of many subjects discussed there). But for all things purely THEORITICAL about the guitar... Rick Beato's channel has a LOT of information (although a lot of advanced concepts... But he goes over basics as well). Signals Music Studio is also a good channel for understanding theory and applying it to guitar practicing. Basically, if you search for anything having to do with natural major scales, you'll find it under the term "Ionian", and for anything about natural minor scales, you'll find some videos under "Aeolian". Key words to look for on Wikipedia would be "pitch (music)", "scale (music)", "interval (music)", "musical keyboard", "Diatonic scale", "semitone", "Major scale", "major second", "C major". Once you've read this (just the main introductions, you don't need to read the whole pages), and you know the standard tuning notes of your guitar strings... You can start figuring it all out on your fretboard 😉.
