For anxiety, I practice mindfulness meditation with my dog. I notice that when I'm anxious or feeling down, he absorbs that energy. So, doing mindfulness exercises or silent meditaiton with him next to me has been every helpful. I've been using books like "30 Days to Reduce Anxiety" by Harper Daniels to pick up some simple mindfulness exercises to do.

Part of being a good dog owner and learning to train your own dog is knowing what is a reasonable expectation. Hearing someone professional, set a reasonable standard and then teach to it is so helpful for new and experienced owners both.

I am so, so thankful I found your channel! The amount of love and respect for dogs is so apparent in your training. The next time our female lunges at the UPS truck, I'll be ready with her favorite toys. Really. The UPS truck!

If you have a strong connection/relationship with your naturally independent dog and take time to build the layers of understanding and confidence you both need then you can have an amazing dog. Otherwise they will do just what comes naturally

I have watched every one of Susan’s podcasts and love these AMA exchanges too. I was very interested in her comments about habituation/generalisation/desensitisation when dealing with a dog’s emotional responses to things . I would love some more information about this. I have recently moved house with a garden off the kitchen and in the last few weeks Spring has sprung and with it dozens of lizards have arrived! (They are Eastern Water Skinks - I live in Australia). My young cocker spaniel (Dash) is in a frenzy with their scent and constant movement in the undergrowth. I am managing okay (just) by limiting visibility and access but this is the only fenced area of the garden and I have to use it for her to eliminate so I feel like I'm reinforcing the value every time we go out. I would love some strategies to help me ‘turn it all into white noise’ and somehow reduce her scent drive. This seems to be the dominant trigger. Dash and I are former students of your Home School the Dog program and know many foundational games but I have noticed in the middle of the day when sun/heat is most intense Dash's interest in the games lessens. Would love it if Susan would consider a podcast on this sort of topic. Thank you

Hi Susan! I’m a fellow Canadian from Montreal and I’ve listened to all your podcasts in my car in the last few months. I’m also a Recallers member since July and I’m retraining my dogs Chibi Toy Fox Terrier 6yo and Suki mix terrier 4yo. They were well behaved before, but it was a lot of management all the time. I love your decision-making process with dogs. I want to suggest a podcast episode on frustration barking. I’m presently training my dogs with your barkenstein program for barking at the door and making a lot of progress. They are good at the relaxation protocol and they know when it’s dogtime or when it’s chill time. But I’m talking about frustration barking during training. My Toy Fox Terrier Chibi tend to be very excited when I do a training session. He will bark at me if : 1) he thinks I’m not giving instruction fast enough, 2) sometimes he will not listen at all and will just offer me everything he knows while barking, 3) I give instruction to Suki my other dog (he can stay on his mat or crate, and received high value treats once in a while, but he can sometimes bark from there too), 4) He doesn’t understand immediately the exercise (when I try new tricks). Before Recallers I would tell him “quiet” and it would work sometimes. Since I’m now trying not to correct verbally, I then tried to stop it by ignoring him or leaving the room (did not work at all and I feel like I’m giving him a time-out punishment). I don’t want to respond to his barking, I don't want to encourage him with attention, but he can do it for a very long time and I feel the more he barks the more he gets frustrated that I don't do what he wants. I don’t know how to proceed in the Susan Garrett way. Thanks for your help and sorry for the long comment.

Hi Susan. I have a follow-up question for you on the discussion about raw feeding on this podcast. I'm one of those vets that you mentioned that is very concerned about the risk of salmonella and E. coli for the dogs and the humans when raw feeding. One of your arguments was that they're using human grade meat and just because there's a risk of salmonella from chicken at the grocery store, that doesn't mean we all need to be vegan. I'm confused by that argument in this scenario because when we buy that chicken from the grocery store to feed our families, WE COOK IT! I am 100% on board if one of my clients wants to cook homemade meals for their pets. IF they have the time and money to work with a veterinary nutritionist and balance it properly and cook fully balanced meals every week. I think that would be amazing! I don't understand how you get from the argument of "it is best to feed human grade, quality ingredients that we would eat ourselves" to "It is okay to feed those ingredients without cooking them to a safe temperature." I love everything about your training. I think we may have to agree to disagree about the raw feeding. Thanks for all that you do for dogs and their people around the world!

Thank you. Fantastic as usual. Would you comment on how to start training with 2 lovely smart doggies? I have a 3 years old lab with basic command knowledge (she chooses when she wants to obey) and a brilliant Australian Shepard 8 months old, who is super eager to please and wants to do everything. I have been trying to train them together so to avoid a sense of rejection by the not current dog of focus. Should I continue trying this joint effort (seems to make incremental improvements) or just focus on one and hope the other dog isn't getting depressed by not being included at a specific moment?

Hi! Great question. You can teach them to wait turns so you can work with one while the other one is calm. Susan did a wonderful episode on this topic: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q2WvXqWXZcuqmZo Happy training!

Oh my goodness you have a 12 week old Border Collie how do we get to see him and where is he from? Is he a red? What about your other dog the young one maybe 2 1/2 or three do you still work with her? Thank you very much I just watch you every once in a while I don’t watch you all the time and I am a Border Collie person and when you said a new Border Collie, it’s like I lit right up.

@@DogsThat oh thank you very much for getting back. I’m so glad her black beauty’s doing well. I love that dog I think because I have a hard dog myself and I know the black beauty is a little bit of a harder dog but I know she’ll get her MACH with her. Way to go I hope to see some videos of her soon

My dog feels everything very intensely and can be very nervous. We just moved to a new country so she's pulling a lot on our walks and is generally more anxious than usual in our new apartment and outside. Do you have any tips for helping dogs cope in these kind of situations?

Hi! You could use Susan's relaxation protocol as a start: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIPQfZdqoJqkfc0 And maybe work on retraining loose leash walking as well: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIKlpZd3pN2efMk&pp=gAQBiAQB If you're interested in learning more about your dog's emotions, here's a playlist: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKnTY6WHeJ2Jg7s

I prefer males. Bigger, stronger built, more fur and character wise more strong willed and robust, funnier and cuddlier. My Finnish Lapphund male was my dream dog, absolutely perfect. Sweet, happy, playful, polite, friendly, knew over 100 tricks, 100% off leash since he was 5months old, we just understood each other without words. I had a stronger connection than to my female Shiba. Then I got my Akita and she is just an angel and has proven me that even females can look stunning and be amazing. But as you with males, for me it would be only the right female which I would be ok with
