My Yorkie used to run w/ me daily, usually around 5 miles. Took him on long hikes, before he got to be a little old man, he would hike 10-15 miles no problem… Of course he got plenty of breaks, water, snacks etc but he was a beast! Up and down rocks better than the big dogs. I always treated him like a dog, no pampering or babying. Best boy ever. He went on ahead to hold it down in heaven last year. Miss my baby every day.

Hi, whenever someone says their dog lived a long time, I like to ask questions (if you have time): What did you feed your dogs? What was your philosophy on vaccines? What type of pest medications did you use or not use? What about her teeth? Did you brush and/or get anesthesia dentals? Raw bones? Thanks in advance if you have time.

@@treasuretrovel3816 human food, real chicken, beef, salmon, veggies, no sugar, no salt, no dogfood, nothing with chemicals or preservatives. dogs eating dogfood is like people eating mcdonals everyday. simple as that. replace dog treats that are filled with preservative by making easy chicken jerkey by dehydrating chicken strips with sprinkle of herbs (dogs can have most herbs, like thyme, rosemary, oregano etc, and sometimes sprinkle of parmesan cheese). same thing as humans avoid processed foods, things that have preservatives.

@@SashaStories Thanks! I too now feed all human grade, fresh, real, carnivore food. I only trust 4, premium dog food companies (Evermore, Raised Right, Raw Bistro and Steves) and so use these human-grade, all natural brands a bit in rotation with homemade raw and gently cooked home recipes. Love that many owners are getting the message that kibble is made from toxic garbage from the human food industry and is too high in grain carbs to be species appropriate for dogs.

Thank you for addressing the issue. Too many people rely on their ability to overpower their small dog instead of training the pup. This is my pet peeve. All dogs deserve to be taught to live in the human world.

After years of large dogs, we now have a miniature schnauzer in our retirement. He passed 3 levels of obedience, he's easy to live with, low shedding, and is a chill lap dog in the evenings. He's perfect for us.

I'm jealous. My 6 month old schnauzer has been the hardest dog to train. She works with 4 different trainers and goes to dog daycare but she is stubborn. I got her because my research showed that they were smart and good dogs. I'll never get another.

I don't have a large dog or a small one. Mine is perfectly medium sized, lol! I wish I had discovered you when I first got my puppy. I would do a few things differently if I could go back in time. One of my biggest challenges is finding a way to get him properly socialized with other dogs. He's not aggressive but is highly excitable. Last weekend, I took a hint from your Bum Training videos. My local pet store was having a nail trim day. I brought my dog to the store and we sat outside at a bench for over an hour just watching dogs and their owners come and go. It went great! At first, he would whine and pull toward any dog that came by, but after a while he settled and became calm. I know that one time didn't completely solve the problem, but it's sure a good start. Agree 150%! I’ve had golden retrievers and was never interested in happy little skittish dogs. But a few years ago I got a new golden and felt bad that she had so little stimulation beyond our walks twice a day. I’m 72 and don’t have the energy I once had. I didn’t want another large dog in the house. So with some hesitation I got a cavalier King Charles spaniel, also a female. Wow! They quickly became buddies. The Cav won’t leave her side and initially promoted all the play. But now it’s two-way and I can’t imagine either one without the other. Best decision I made and personally I like having the Cav on my lap sometimes when I’m watching a movie. By the way, I’ve also got a cat and they live in harmony! Thanks for this post and hope it causes people to be more open-minded about small dogs. And I believe most of what you see in dogs goes back to the training given by their owners. Breeds are influential on behavior, but to me training the most important.

I have a small dog now who I adopted from a shelter. She's a Maltese/Bichon Frise. She's a fabulous dog-- loves everyone, listens well, and has a wonderful personality. I've had mostly medium or large dogs my whole life and had that small dog bias, but no more. Everyone who meets her wants to take her home.

Thanks to all I have learned from watching your channel, my miniature Schnauzer has become wonderful to be around. When I got her, she was 3 years old and I was her third owner. The only command she knew was “Go to bed” and she barked at anyone or anything that moved . Now she basically only barks when someone is at the door, but as soon as I acknowledge her concern and check it out , she calms down immediately. She’s also a pleasure to walk on leash and off. Thanks so much for all the guidance you give us!

I think at this point in my life a small dog is definitely the way to go, I love small dogs, they’re fun, playful and cuddly and they’re easier to handle for someone like me. I want a dog I can carry if I need to take it to the vet. I definitely want to train it and socialize it well. Thanks for the video!

I have a 12 pound shitzu-poodle mix and every day we go on hikes in two awesome parks nearby. Woods and fields, fallen trees to get over or under, creeks to cross, high grass. She’s awesome, and has a lot of stamina, and although she isn’t into playing with them, she has no problem usually meeting big dogs. I like having a small dog because she’s very easy to manage, but she still does fun stuff with me.

How do you keep ticks and fleas off?

I have a 14 pound, 4 year old, purebred, black miniature poodle who is awesome. We also go on daily, long walks (urban and trails). Everybody loves Wolfy and our previous miniature poodles. I took all of them through classes at a very good obedience school. I have left my current guy intact so that he does not get the side effects of de-sexing (obesity, lipomas, lower energy, etc.).

@@MrStringpicker I am also interested in this issue. Most people do not understand that the flea/tick "medicine" (more accurately insecticide poison) is very toxic to dogs and also does not prevent tick disease (because the ticks have to bite and feed before they die so they end up attached and dead but the disease organisms have been injected). I don't use any of the strong veterinary poisons and instead use repellants. My favorite is Bark and Whiskers flea/tick repellant. It has a fairly strong smell to repel and I think it works pretty well. Adding some fresh garlic to the dog food seems to also help as it imparts a body odor that is foreign to seeking ticks and fleas. My dog has never gotten fleas, knock on wood.

We have a Norwich Terrier and his is a great dog with big personality. Went on a 3 mile hike last weekend. Very sturdy and tough for a little dog. We also have a lab and they are buddies.

In addition to our standard poodle we also have a Yorkiepoo and a Chihuahua/JRT mix. Their good behavior always surprises people since they're so used to seeing small dogs poorly socialized/trained.

Thanks for this video. I have always been partial to big dogs. But, at 66 years old, I think my next dog should be a little smaller. Ive had a few dog related injuries in the last few years that wouldnt happen while training and playing with a smaller dog. Where I live apartments and assisted living communities (Canada) usually allow small dogs, but, not big ones. So thats something else to consider a few decades down the road!

Hell yeah Uncle Stonnie, small dogs rock! I grew up around working line Malinois, and because of that I admit I had a few prejudices over tiny dogs (I used to say stuff like "the smallest dog is the Staffie. Smaller than that, it's just a plushie that barks and poops"), but with time and experience I did change my mind, to the point where now that I'm older and more mature I'm actually starting to think that my next dog won't be yet another working line Malinois, but instead some little fella like a Border Terrier, a Volpino Italiano, a Miniature Schnauzer, or even a Norwich Terrier like the one you showed us today. I am really glad you made this video. I just brought home a blue cattle dog from a shelter and she is a half-siz heeler, probably mixed with some Jack Russell, based on her appearance and affinity for chasing rabbits back into their holes. I am adjusting to having my first small dog and it is kind of awesome. She fits everywhere and is extremely smart and observant. She is the most low maintenance dog I have lived with. It’s really nice to see someone who hunts and works with dogs the way they are meant to be worked with saying nice things about the little guys.

I had boxers for over 60 years but knew the day might come with age that they’d be too much. I researched a long time ago and decided in Boston Terriers; minimal grooming, not yappy, big personalities. My first is a retired show dog, so I did obedience like you did with your Norwich. We visit nursing homes now. I recently added another Boston. Great little dogs!

Totally understand. I had 3 German shepherds. My last one died when I turned 58 and I have Lyme disease, which is a pain of a disease. So I got 2 Boston's puppies. They are 9 years old now, brothers, and are still like puppies. They are such wonderful dogs. A little bit crazy sometimes, but so funny. They are the best anti-depressants!

I am proud to say people see my Westie and they say, “Ugh, little dog” but in no time everyone absolutely loves him and then comments that they’d love a little dog if the dog was like my Gus. Always treated him like a dog and not a lap toy. He plays with German Shepherds and his bestie is an Akita. Thanks for shedding some light on these dogs.

Finding a smaller dog which is well bred, with a stable disposition might be more challenging, but if you’re not a hulk, it’s essential to seek out a smaller anima. ❤

Back in 2012 and 2014 I lost both of my beloved black Labrador Retrievers to old age (Mister and Gilroy were both 15 when they passed). After mourning them for a few years I decided to adopt a senior Lab. During my search I clicked on the profile of a cute small mixed breed who was black. I was intrigued. Well, I wound up adopting 10 month old Chorkie Henry six years ago and am absolutely smitten with him! No, he isn’t as well behaved and “easy” as my Labs were…but his personality and “terrier” traits are so charming and sweet that I am absolutely endeared with this ten pound loving pocket rocket ♥️♥️♥️

My first dog was a 25 pound sheltie cocker spaniel mix. At least that’s what we think she was. She lived to be 17 years old. Absolutely wonderful dog. At 14 years old, she went on a 7 mile hike in the mountains with no issues. She went everywhere with me. I still miss that dog and she’s been gone Over 20 years now. She was not fragile at all.

Whenever someone says that their dog lived into the late teens, I ask them what they fed them. Can you share more info? Was she fixed and if so at what age? From your post we know you exercised her and so she was fit. Did you vaccinate (a lot or just core)? Did you use any of these spot on or oral flea/tick meds, heartworm, etc.? If you have time, Thanks.

My collie/ springer cross lived to 18. He wasn't neutered, had very few meds other than vaccinations for his first 10 years. Then we took advice that annual vax were not needed. ideally get blood levels but my vet didn't do that. So he just didn't get his vax. We weren't living in a high risk area for picking up infections but maybe I was also lucky. My younger girl was 16 when she died. I think she could have lived longer but there was a shortage of vets here when she needed a lump removing & when she finally could get an appointment it had grown too much and she was put down. She wasn't neutered either. I suppose I was just really careful looking out for them as I didn't want any unplanned pregnancies. 😂

I love this video thank you for talking about small dogs i have 2 and they are amazing. We chose small dogs because we have a small house and garden. At the end of the day a dog is a dog no matter what the size. My boys love all people and all dogs they enjoy every interaction they get. My smallest a maltipoo is so smart you only have to train him to do something once or twice and he has got it. The older a poodle is definitely not as smart and needs more homework 😂 you couldn't get more loving dogs and as im quite small the enjoy cuddles on my lap without me been squashed. Thanks❤

My 14 lb Chi mix can hike 12 miles a day on the Appalachian Trail and is a better rock scrambler than the big dogs. I choose to hike with a small dog because I know I can carry her out in a sling if anything happens. Thanks for the video.

I have a mini schnauzer chihuahua mix (I was told, seems plausible). Talk about a dog that is about as fast a dog I have ever seen, can jump crazy high, up into your arms, but still loves to just snuggle on the couch for hours. She is literally up for anything, and cheap to feed as well.

We had a Westie, he loved and kept up with our labs, was great with all children, and did well in obedience. His breeder was and is wonderful, she did not ever reinforce barking in her puppies so he was already at 12 weeks knew barking didn't work. He was a great dog.

@StonnieDennis My Man. You are an excellent instructor- giving us the whys and wherefores in the dog trainer's mind. And your first priority is the care of all the dogs. So I get ending the tape where you did. BTW I agree now seeing you with a Norwich Terrier and singing such high praises.. I never would have thought of that breed for next pet. We had one of the first "mini" doodles in 2006 from a farm down in Kentucky (Lexington right next door to the late great Derby Horse Barabarosa's farm) So I see the breeders have perfected the toy doodles! And they are super cute! I was a wee bit sad when this vid ended and can't help but think we might have missed a golden adventure with you rescuing the dog at the creek! I really wanted to see 1) how you handled dog at creek and 2) who was trapping who. From your descrip I wasn't clear on if the dog found a critter or the critter had found the dog. Now I will lie awake nights wondering what happened. 😂Yeah maybe it would have been a wild goose chase but you can decide later if you want to include it. (Unless you got bears or rattlers or some other unsavory critters.) First time watching, first time commenting. 😊Great channel.

Allways had large dogs. As so many people i thought small dogs were kinda "annoying". But we have adopted a small dog and she is just amazing. And she lays in my lap in the evening while we watch tv. I love it!!

I agree that small dogs are often held to lower behavior standards. This results in an awful lot of us that have had bad experiences with them. I have met a handful of great small dogs, but fairly or not I do still think they are exceptions to the rule.

All my life German shepherds were my companions usually in pairs. Yes I felt annoyed at the little dogs especially the noisy barking ones. I took a leap of faith and bought a Morkie after my last 2 sheps died. Little Rocky is now 18 months old and he’s had Obedience 101 training from 10 weeks old just like the sheps. He’s awesome. Adorable. Brave. Protects the house but knows leave it and gets calm behaviour rewarded not barking. I absolutely adore him.

I'm pro little athletic dog 100% When I lived in the Rockies surrounded by empty blm land, I did daily hikes with my lab and two chihuahua/terrier mixes (both 14lbs) and they zoomed from one smell to another for hours together. They absolutely lived for it. Up scree fields and 14ner peaks, through creeks, in snow and rain, in kayaks, etc. Reminded me of horses vs. donkeys. My lab was bigger yes but not as agile with less endurance and attitude than my little guys. The only problems I had were with large dogs, both aggressive and friendly. Large aggressive dogs will target my small dogs as an easy target to bully and try to pin them down and get very mouthy. And the large friendly dogs can be dangerous when they aren't gentle enough and play too rough. One of my little guys has been body slammed by big dog with the zoomies and it's a miracle he didn't break bones. And these were dogs I tried to vet that were all friends dogs or family members dogs who assured me they were good with small dogs. I know better now. Forget the doodles, go for the all wheel drive athletic breeds and you'll have an adventure bud and snuggle bud for life.

I had 3 big dogs that I regularly walked with two chihuahua crosses and the tiny duo would often let the big dogs know when any of them did something they didn’t like. Their tenacity was huge compared with their diminutive stature.

I love the small dog content! I have a 30lb Australian Labradoodle and a huge Bernese Mountain dog. Best combo, lol. My gf likes the huge dogs and I'm a bigger fan of the smaller guys.

LOL your Houla was so funny... His thoughts? "OK, well he's talking again, and they're all just panting and goofing off, and no one's taking care of business! Oh well, as always, it's up to me...sigh" And off he went to locate all small annoying critters for possible future fun, made sure no big, mean critters were raiding HIS land, possibly herded some stray sheep back to their field, helped a neighbour corner his ornery bull in a pen, zipped home a sec to make sure no one was robbing you blind in your absence... and probably more! With him, you could leave for a week, return and find everything as it was 🙂 Loved the video. Wish more of my neighbours let their little dogs be "just dogs" more often. Cheers!

Love this, please do more small dogs. I've had Rotties, Dobies and Shepards. Like u said getting older I have gone to small pups. I think of can I carry 140 and dog in an emergency... I know have a Rat Terrier❤❤❤❤

I like big dogs, too, but I love little Rat Terriers. They are good little dogs. The ones I've had, or known, have not been at all snappy, and are generally not yappy. They are smart, sweet, intelligent and easy to train. I like their smooth coats, too -- they do shed, but are very easy to take care of, and the smooth coat is much more pleasant to pet than a wire-haired coat. I think Rat Terriers deserve to be a lot more popular than they are (perhaps the name is unfortunate).

I am sixty-three, and grew up on a farm in Herefordshire [UK] with sheepdogs and Jack Russells or variant like Fox-Terriers. Two and half years ago I was given what will be my last dog at fifteen months as a rescue. A Patterdale Terrier, so similar to a Fox-terrier in conformation, but gentler as a character. She copes with big dogs and small dogs with style! She is agile, and makes big dogs look foolish by dodging and weaving, and she simply has an affinity for smaller dogs that makes therm instant friends. She is also the most loyal little dog I ever knew. Even my Welsh Sheepdog [1984-1997] was not more loyal, and she has more than taken up his footprints. If you gain the affection of a small dog, you have an ally without parallel ... To be fair my little dog does not see herself as small! But she is aware, and can get out of the way of dog perhaps six times her weight. She is now three and a half and weighs 6 KGs, about 14 lbs. I have two dogs I brought home at the same time, a black lab puppy (planned) and what I think is a chihuahua/papillon cross rescue (not planned). The little one came with baggage, sever separation issues, etc. But she has blossomed into an amazing little dog, smart, independent, and 100% terrier. If I had to choose my next dog, I’d probably go with the lab, but it would be a very tough choice.

My dog got charged by an off leash dog yesterday and scared the crap out of us. They got in an argument and I had to shove it off of her. Seeing this video was a nice distraction. My lab is good and she is acting like it didn’t even happen, that’s why I love labs ❤

I’ve had 2 Schipperkes. 1st one best ranch dog! 2 nd one great traveler, but couldn’t trust off leash. The Schips are loyal to the max and after checking out perimeter, will come and sit by your side. They’d rather do that than engage with strangers dogs. Healthy and no bother- love love kids.

My very first dog was a Giant Schnauzer. Then I had German Shepherds, my favorite breed, but as I get older we now have a GSD/ACD mixed boy and a ACD girl. I love her size. 15kg, easy to be picked up if needed but still looking like a "real" dog.

We had a Cairn terrier and she was full of personality, attractive, and well behaved. Not easy to train because of the terrier nature, but despite our bumbles, she was a good girl.
