Thanks Adrian! Well, the biggest difference between the two would be their natural range...Balsams are typically regionally isolated on the east coast of North America whereas Amabilis have evolved into an isolated species on the west coast. Also, the needles on the lower branches of a Balsam fir splay out horizontally from the sides of the branch (creating a flatter profile) as do the Amabilis Firs, although the Amabilis firs also have needles on top of the branches that lay flat, pointing towards the ends of the branches. Does that help at all?! If I ever get a chance to get out east and chat about some Balsams, I'll do another video, promise!

@@NerdyAboutNature hmm well I hear trees being referred to as balsam fir on the island here all the time. Is it possible everyone just calls them that but they are in fact silver firs? Kind of like how people often refer to Douglas fir as a FIR...?

@@NerdyAboutNature Thank you for making a video about how to identify pacific silver fir, pacific silver fir is one of my favorite northwest conifers. My number one favorite northwest conifer however is noble fir, there are several trails in my area of the cascades, mt. jefferson wilderness that go past noble firs 5 to 6 feet in diameter and well over 200ft in height. I also think too that middle to upper elevation old growth forests are often overlooked by lowland species like douglas fir, western redcedar and sitka spruce. I love all old growth, but it is the higher elevation trees that are my favorites. I have hiked in the northern oregon and washington cascades through many old growth groves of western hemlock, mountain hemlock, silver fir, noble fir and yellow cedar.

Awesome video, only suggestion would be to slow down a bit. I can't catch all the great info! 😁
