what about oil?
@NerdyAboutNature2 күн бұрын
Oil is primarily marine debris that have been compacted and condensed over time, like algae in shallow seas that weren't able to decompose because of anoxic waters

Thanks a lot for the good video. Over here in Germany much of the original natural habitats have unfortunately already been destroyed by overfarming and monocultures. This has lead to problems with droughts and monoculture forests being destroyed by bugs. This shows that our system isnt meant to stay. Bioregionalism and more Localism in general would really be the solution. Thanks for advocating for that man. Greetings🫡

Super informative! I love that you took the time to admire the natural beauty and complexity of the ivy before offing it, so many times people tend to see invasive species as "evil plants" when they're just doing their natural cycles in the completely wrong place. Love what you're doing, keep it up ❤

It is unfortunate that not a single old tree is shown in the first part, which is supposed to illustrate what an old growth understory looks like. But most importantly, trying to generalize what an old-growth forest understory should look like is a sketchy endeavour. Forest floor topography and vegetation strongly depend on many other factors than tree age (tree species, site elevation, cumulative precipitation, slope aspect, etc.) which implies that there is no such thing as a representative "average" old-growth forest landscape.
@NerdyAboutNature11 күн бұрын
...that entire forest was an oldgrowth forest. "old growth" doesn't necessarily mean "big trees", and just because it doesn't contain what you consider to be valuable as old growth trees doesn't mean that the ecosystem as a whole isn't valuable.

Hey Ross, Great video! I was curious about where you read that yellow-cedar decline is present in southern B.C. To my knowledge, the furthest south that yellow-cedar decline has been documented is the central coast of B.C., around Bella Coola. I'd be very interested in any information about decline occurring in southern B.C., as my PhD work focuses on this subject. Thanks!

Humans are short sighted beings, we lack the collective ability to eat bitter plants and live physically challenging lives unless we’re being chased by a species that no longer exists
@kenfoley282029 күн бұрын
Well said Ross, I don't think bitterness is in your heart, anyone who see's what modernity is doing to the earth and isn't outraged is not paying attention or doesn't care.

It’s exponential, more carbon per acre is stored with the age of the forest. A 200 year old forest stores 4 times the carbon per year of a 100 year old forest, not just double. Making protecting our oldest tree stands the most important thing we can do to manage their carbon intake. Managing a forest through small and medium trees only will never reach the carbon storage per year that older tree stands can do.
