Man, there are so many places I miss in addition to Likelike Drive Inn.. King's Bakery kinda by King & McCully, Bea's Drive-In by Kaimuki HS, Byron's by the airport, Dot's in Wahiawa, Jolly Roger's, Shakey's Pizza, Wisteria, Flamingo's, Colombia Inn, Bob's Big Boy... the list is endless. That L&L order... "Chicken katsu, french fries instead of rice, gravy all over" used to be my go to order at Grace's. Back when I was young and could eat all of that without gaining weight. lol.

Super nostalgic old-school comfort food I grew up with at all the original locations, except I’ve only been to the Kaka’ako Highway Inn and never been to Leeward Drive In (too far from town). You hit all of my favorite spots and most of my favorite orders, so everything was so familiar and looked so ‘ono, but you showed and described each item really clearly and “appetizingly” for people who did not grow up eating this food as we did. Great job! I think I’ll go up the street to St. Louis Drive In for lunch today and get a Super Japanese Deluxe Plate (Japanese Deluxe Plate with scallops)!

Aloha, Amanda, Felix & Davonn: What a highlight & plethora of locations & food! I have been to all of these locations and have eaten the food recommendations. But that burger, OMG at Liliha Bakery...I had it, bomb! Nothing like a Char broiled burger. Not many places do Charbroiled burgers anymore, but I do know of another place that serves ono charbroiled burgers, but it's not locally owned. What was also funny was that piece of chicken at Leeward drive in, so huge...then you show the chicken at Zippy's so tiny. I often eat the Loco Moco at Kapiolani Coffee shop since it comes with mac salad & I order it with Fried Rice vs white rice. One of the Sunday's specials are the Sweet-sour spareribs. So good! My favorite at Leeward Drive Inn is the hamburger and the fries. The only place I know that has that nostalgic sauce for the hamburger. (Reminds me of Toppers Drive In in Wahiawa which is long gone.) I love the soggy fries, I just wish they had a smaller size because there's one huge bag of fries. Next to Kua Aina's skinny fries, these are my second favorite. (Kalapawai Cafe in Kapolei also has those wonderful skinny fries.)

Grew up eating poi by itself - never mixing it with anything else and always clean that bowl and storage container. I’ll eat day old poi but prefer fresh. Oxtail soup - my go to is Neimann Marcus (believe it or not) on Thursday. We recently tried Super Pho’s oxtail soup and was impressed! Hands down!!! I tried the other Liliha Bakery locations and somehow, the flavor from the grill at the original location makes the food soooo ONO! I find it always entertaining to sit at the corner and watch the cooks manning the grill. Rainbow’s - boneless chicken, Mahi mahi or beef cutlet are my go to. St. Louis Drive Inn…YUM! I don’t think there’s anything on their menu that’s not good. Leeward Drive Inn…their fried saimin is winners! I miss The Heights in Aiea - their fried saimin was the BOMB!!!

once I read the two words "original location," I'm immediately watching it: it has a unique aura, long-time (residential) customers that have been going to a place for decades/generations and a certain ambience that can't be duplicated at a different area; "hanabada days/shmall kid time" nostalgia is one heck / he(double hockey sticks) of a drug. I remembah Kapiolani Coffee Shop while playing bowling (in high school) at Kam Bowl; before it moved to City Square Shopping Center and then, to Waimalu Shopping Center (in Aiea). You can't go wrong with (Pinoy kine) Lechon (unlike the stateside brand, Baken-Et's "fried pork skins" Chicharonnes)... Liliha Bakery's "old school" diner area (I had breakfast there once) and their famous Coco Puffs are so Ono.. Ohh, I love it ! Like-Like Drive Inn (next to Tespresso Cafe) was replaced by YogurStory (which used to be in the International Center, with Sorabol (which moved to the old Pagoda restaurant/hotel location). I tried Like-Like Drive Inn (once). The Like-Like crowd vibes were various: large families, kids or middle-aged couples. In Kalihi, there is an actual drive-in restaurant, like Starbucks (in Kaneohe (Bay Shopping Center) or Waipahu (by Seafood City Supermarket & Long's Drugs (now "CVS Pharmacy"): Richie's. I liked Leeward Drive-In, in Waipahu. I haven't been to Forty Niners (the original Aiea location), Wai'oli Tea Room (now Waiʻoli Kitchen and Bake Shop), but I went to small Natsunoya Tea House (Alewa Heights, in the Kalihi area; next to a Hawai'ian graveyard). I remember seeing a King's Bakery; Kamehameha Bakery is cool (City Square Shopping Center; it used to be on North School St. in a two story brick building; there was a hole in the middle; where you could drive a car through; there was also a Chinese restaurant. Now, there is a Rainbow Drive Inn, across from Union 76 gas station). Did you folks remember any of these places, before they got shut down: Ideta's (on Kokea Street, which was next to a bowling alley or a church/now, it a used car lot and a Zippy's (Kapalama Shopping Center); Fritz's European Bakery (it was behind Kapalama Shopping Center); a WingStop fast-food joint had moved in). Kelly's Drive Inn (a bar, restaurant and bakery = now, it's a Harley Davidson/Cycle City; a Wendy's location), (airport side): Byron's Drive Inn (& Chowder House (Ward Warehouse), Chan's Gourmet Buffet (313 North Nimitz Hwy); Gussie L'Amours (nightclub/bar: mud wrestling, rock bands and beers); Hungry Lion restaurant (in the Nuuanu Shopping Center (it is now a Starbucks); Patti's Chinese Chicken, Huckleberry Farms, TCBY Yogurt; the old "Chun Hoon" (Chun Afong) market area); Mama's Mexican Kitchen (on North School Street); Bob's Big Boy (in Mapunapuna; when 99 Ranch Market, Hopaco (office stationary store), Henry Loui's (on Paa St.), Jumbo's & Gibson Shopping Center (Servco Mapunapuna) was there; later, Bob's Big Boy was called Bob's Big Bear (a former Sizzler's location on Dillingham Blvd., close to Boulevard/Dillingham Saimin). (Checker's and Pogo had a TV show filmed at Gibson's Shopping Center with a "Sky Slide" (back in the 1970's); Boulevard/Dillingham Saimin, Waikamilo Drive Inn (it was across from Boulevard Saimin), Wisteria (it is now a 7-11 convenience store on Piikoi St./McCully), Flamingo's Chuckwagon: across from (Neal) Blaisdell Center/"H.I.C." (Hawaii Int'l Center - during my father's days; not Hawaiian Island Creations, one surf/outddors sports store); or Flamingo Kapiolani (cocktails): Budnamujip; now, Million #2 restaurant by a Jack In A Box branch); the Willows (Moiliili; it was on Hausten St.), Yum Yum Tree (Westridge Shopping Center or in town), Monterey Bay Canners, Shakey's Pizza (I went there twice; the Waipahu location; it used to be on Keeaumoku Street ?); Jolly Roger's (in Kalihi = O'Reilly's Auto Parts shop); Kenny's Restaurant/Deli Okazuya ("Kam Bowl" now); Kam Bowl (now a Walgreen's branch; they do have a Kam Bowl "bowling pin" plaque hanging there); Kalihi Bowl too. Other bowling places: Leeward Bowl (there is a bar in there); Aiea Bowl (across the street; there is a Shell gas station and Aiea Medical Building restaurant called Heights Drive Inn (which later closed): In my middle school years, I went there to eat lunch after seeing a dentist above); Pali Lanes (in Kailua: it closed); in the McCully area: Bowl-O-Drome (820 Isenberg Street; it had shut down), it was across from a Chinese restaurant, a First Hawaiian Bank (Moiliili / University) location and a baseball stadium (not the Old (Honolulu) Stadium Park, aka "termite palace." Didn't knew that there was a bowling center in the Fort Shafter area... Did you guys go to "W&M Burger" in Kaimuki area (Waialae Ave.) yet ?; the small mom and pop place, close by a: City Mill, Boston's Pizza Bakery or a Larry's Auto Parts ?; if not, Magoo's Pizza Waikiki (1006 Kapahulu Ave.), Eagle Cafe (Nimitz Business Center), Smith's Union Bar (in Chinatown/WWII 'Pearl Harbor' era) or Anna Miller's (nearby a (Sumida) watercress farm, by Pearlridge (Shopping) Mall/Center ?

I used to be a ketchup and Tabasco on eggs before sriracha came around. Funny that you guys mentioned McDonald's while talking about soggy fries. Before the the McDonald's opened on the corner of Palolo and Waialae, a little burger takeout place was located in the prior building. It was run by the Trusdale (not sure if that's the correct spelling) family. Anyway, they had really good soggy fries. But then again, I was a little kid way back then. Mahalo for the video!
