lyrics:
You worship the sun and you're aching for change
But you keep starving your heart
You used to have sisters
You don't anymore
You worship the sun
But you keep feeding the dark
And I'm out in the yard
With my son and my daughter
And the sky is all black and I think we should start running...
Running from the water
And everybody's yelling
Yelling that they're coming
But I don't see a single soul
They're all so busy yelling
Not one of them is hearing
The hissing from the bottom of the boat
I got some feelings up my sleeve
I got a compass in my arm
I got a needle in my heart
It's gonna tell us where we are
SXSW
Two miles from town
I can't get out
I can't look down
If you can hear
If you're around
I'm over here
I'm over here
I'm watching everyone I love
Drowning in the sound
You worship the sun
But the moon's in the way
So get your armaments out
She's always looking for trouble
She's gonna get what's been coming to her
She's switching the tides and we can't have that shit around
The television they're blaring out a warning:
That our natural state is drowning
That our natural state is burning
And you're trying to help
And you're clicking for change
And you're calling it out
And you're adding your name
And you're marching for peace
But you're lynching the bitch
That got up in your face
How else they gonna to take you seriously?
SXSW
Two miles from town
I can't get out
I can't look down
If you can hear
If you're around
I'm over here
I'm over here
I'm watching
Everyone I love
Drowning in the sound
And your body is a temple
And the temple is a prison
And the prison's overcrowded
And the inmates know it's flooding
And the body politic is getting sicker by the minute
And the media's not fake
It's just very
Inconvenient
Do you ever feel like this should be officially the end?
And that you should be the one to do the ending but you can't?
And do you ever feel that everyone is slowly letting go
Do you ever feel that... that incredibly alone?
And they're saying not to panic
And it's like a broken record
As if anybody knows what that is
And they're saying that we'll manage
It's the hottest one on record
And they're saying that that's just the way it is
Now I can taste it coming
I can taste it with my tongue
And my children are so heavy
But I pick them up & run
And I know I'll have to swim soon
When the water gets too high
I'll keep on holding them above me
I'll keep on holding them & crying
SXSW
Two miles from town
I can't get out
I can't look down
If you can hear
If you're around
I'm over here
I'm over here
I'm watching
Everyone I love....
Drowning in the sound.

Try living through the Second World War in England when bombs are dropping round your house and going out of your front door only to see horses blown to bits in the street and some of them landing dead on peoples roof tops, how did they live through that for nearly 6 years! My old mum told me that, CRISIS what CRISIS.

i know this was 3 years ago but even then i don't think everyone was going through what this video depicts emotionally. in fact, what the video seems to depict is a highly individualized experience (which isn't to say that it's not relatable, in a lot of ways it is) that is essentially a persons reaction to how polarized everything has gotten. if everyone -did- feel this way, the message in the video likely would have much less resonance since we would make the change necessary for the message to no longer be relevant

I'm watching this again but I'm 3 years older now, and everything makes so much more sense. From what I gather, I'm losing everyone I love to the "sound," and the "sound" would be the media that is swallowing up those I thought I knew. This still rings true, so I'm glad to have come back. Thank you!

I already said this on the original video before. But you releasing this song when you did was one of the most cathartic experiences in my life. I was evacuated from Florida during Hurricane Irma and terrified and mad and lost in the world. I love the land I hail from. My soul is attached to the Southern Florida environment. And I hated being away from my family. Who were sitting in their house, kayaks packed and inside the living room, ready for the worst. Hailing from a state where our government officials refuse to utter the words climate change and where rising waters and more frequent tropical storms due to warming waters are going to hit us hard, and sooner than most places made me so terrified. And so angry. I was taking shelter in Pensacola when this was first put out and debating on meeting Rick Scott who was flying in there the next day, with a sign and a middle finger. Hurricane Harvey had just happened and I didn't know if I'd have a home to come back to. This song spoke to me in the middle of a terrible storm like a mother would to her child. Thank you, thank you, thank you, for sharing, and giving me the good cry I needed to let happen in order to not go into a panic attack again. Your art means so much to so many.

I'm in a weird place with my... fandom? I haven't connected with much of your previous musical work. I recognize it as "good", but I don't find myself listening much. Maybe our personal experiences are too divergent for me to internalize it much. But even if I'm not necessarily a big fan of what you do, I'm a huge fan of how you do it. I'm a fan of *you*, as a person-of the crazy, beautiful, wonderful person that you share with us. That said... this one... this one socked me in the gut. I did more than just hear it. When you first released this track, I spoke to some friends who volunteered during Hurricane Harvey. One friend in particular said that you captured exactly how it felt. Risking your own life for people risking theirs, and it seemed helpless at times because it was this massive chain of risk that no one had prepared or signed up for, in reality. Nobody thinks, “I love living in a place that may just totally wash away when nature wants to be a twat.” This video encapsulates everything I was watching my friends go through, and what they were showing the survivors go through. It’s brilliance out of despair.

I can't put in to words how much I love Amanda and how much her music has changed my life and my way of thinking. I have been listening to her music for over 10 years and she always inspires me with every release. As a gay man I think of her as a goddess, a transcendent beauty that speaks with such intelligence and passion, it speaks to me.... And I love her so much. She has been a constant in my life for over 20 years and I always return to her music because it is timeless and beautiful

I have played this song on repeat today. I can't count the loved ones I have spoken to in the last 12 hours who either have Covid; or they have loved ones who are dead, or dying, from Covid. This song has been the only thing holding me together.

Thank you Amanda. Your creation resonates with my heart's experience of ongoing terror, rage and deep deep concern for life on our planet and all things I love so much. I can hardly breathe not knowing what to do about it. Amidst all this, you have created a work of art, a work of love, that reaches out and touches the cheek of beauty, truth and goodness.

Your work reminds me that humans are actually so so beautiful. And it's really easy to forget nowadays. But like, we can communicate through so many channels, create so many things, we are so beautiful in our diverse forms. Why do we forget what makes us human? Anyway, I loved it. Great work 💖

I am in complete awe of the fact that you make so many feel SOOO much and that they let you know it. I sing. I write. I play. I’ve never aspired to to anything with. It just makes me feel good. I guess that’s what the whole point is with music. Allowing it to make you feel good. That’s something this world gets less of and that is why you are so very important. Be blessed Amanda P.

I love music. I listen to a lot of it. I don't think any artist I've heard in my life so far has moved me like Amanda has. The raw emotion in her lyrics and voice has made me cry to more of her songs than any other artist I've listened to, and I don't cry easily. She's an insanely talented artist.
