• abigail lmao ok so basically if you like a big difference in your up and down strokes they’re perfect. but if you’re a beginner they’re a little harder to use due to the large nib. it only takes a week or so to get used to though so if you’re going for a thicker calligraphy style then i would try a couple of them and practice and then go from there
@DeziJ23
@DeziJ23 4 жыл бұрын
It’s preference.. lots of people say they don’t recommend while others do. Try one of each and see which you prefer. If your starting out I would just start with black anyways before worrying about color. Sometimes unfortunately you have to try things out yourself to see what you actually like versus going off just what others say for this exact reason. There’s a beginner lettering set on a amazon for about $10 and it comes with tombow dual brush pen in black as well as the hard and soft fudenoske pen pencil eraser etc. check that out

I'd say to avoid the sakura koi brush pens as they fray terribly quick! Mine frayed into a thick stub after one month of using it which is absolutely heart breaking 😭 also if you're concerned about the pens being water proof, the tombow fudenosuke is the most water proof while the pentel ones as well as the sakura pigmas will smudge when it comes in contact with water! Imo the ZIG Brushables are better than tombow dual brush pens as they don't fray as quick and also makes a prettier gradient while writing. The artline stix also makes a pretty gradient but is a little too thick for me. I can't say anything for the rest of the pens she's mentioned here as I've not tried them out :D Tl;dr my favs are the tombow fudenosuke for regular lettering and the zig brushables for fancier, coloured lettering!

Enyze96 .e n i C: e with the kuretake, if you want waterproof ranges delve into some of the other brush pens they sell like the Mangaka or calligraphy ranges. The clean colour/ Kalediolines are designed to be used with water and to blend into one another so if your going to use water but dont want them to bleed then it's best not to use them. The Faber-Castells tend to be paper dependent when it comes to water resistance (as with thier entire range) but any ink that's alcohol resistant against things like copics and shin han markers is usually the best option in obtaining a waterproof ink. Sadly waterproof ink doesn't come in a large range of colours, unlike waterbased ink only, some only do black or grey, where's a few do brown and purple as they're more used for illustration rather than calligraphy. An alternative is a dip pen which takes some practice and time to use properly or a calligraphy bushes kit with an ink block. But that's if you want to get right into the art of it.

I personally love the Sakura Koi brush pens since they're quite flexible and nice to use. I've had mine for a few months and the tips aren't anymore frayed than any other brush pen I've owned. Perhaps if you're heavy handed or I just don't use mine as oftenly

Maybe you're heavy handed? I bought mine when I was in Grade 11 and I'm currently in Grade 12 (And yes I use the pen frequently since I love the color) and I don't really have any fraying problems with the pen.

I don't know if any of you also experience the same but my Tombow brush markers wear down FAST! Since it's a felt tip, the tips of my markers have definitely been fraying and though the flexibility increases, I don't have the same control as I used to when the marker was still new. Has anyone experienced the same?
@chloebaker1345

Kirstie Trash yes i totally agree!
@Tippel3
@Tippel3 6 жыл бұрын
That usually just happens if you use them on the wrong paper. If you use a Tombow on a copypaper it can happen that it will fray right away from the first use. If you use the right paper, you can use them until they're empty without fraying. Make sure you just use very smooth, slick paper. Paper from Clairefontaine is usually very good. The Rhodia dotpad if you like a block but it's very expensive (at least where I live) but the "DCP copy paper" from Clairefontaine is also absolutely great to use with brushpens! Maybe you have a store near by and can feel the surface of a Rhodia DotPad, just to know what you are searching for If you want to search for an available copy paper in your area. Make sure that it's for laser printers!

Sadly just like a normal brush. A pen with a brush will wear down. Hairs will get scraggly and ink don't be as flowing with ink. Cut off loose hairs and don't press too hard with the brush and it should prolong the life

When I first used real-brush brush pens (the Muji one), it was really hard to use because it’s so different. It was also really frustrating that the brush would fan out when writing in circular motions. I never used it again until I accidentally bought the Clean Colour instead of Brushables. This was so much easier to use than my first real brush, but it still took some time to get used to. I think if you’re still new to a real brush, start small by using just the tip first, and go really, really slow, it actually helps. What I like about real-brush brush pens are that they don’t fray so easily like brush pens and you can kinda adjust the bristles.
@BebiSpinster
@BebiSpinster 6 жыл бұрын
I think your grip on the pen robs you of a lot of control. You have sort of a "rollerball grip", but if you gripped the pen more like you would a fountain pen or a dip pen or an actual paint brush, you could probably balance the nib better, giving you more control of line width and variation.

Hey there. Awesome job as usual. On the Zig brush, you are not using it wrong, it’s a brush, therefore is thought for brush calligraphy like for example chinese letters. You know how important it is to use the right tools for the right purposes. The Zig brushes are amazing, but the same way you don’t use a parallel pen for copperplate you are not expected to use a Zig for this kind of calligraphy. Love from Spain. Marina

I use the Ecoline brush pens for art in my sketchbook, i do little watercolour paintings with them, just blend things out with a water brush, it creates the same effect as watercolours but the colours are generally brighter and more modern. what i like about artline stix is its more on the cheap side but what i dislike about it is because it's a marker-like pen, it bleeds so much. other thank that. i like them. though not as much as the tombow dual brush pens. those were what i used to actually practice and make my calligraphy better and neater. it isn't really something a beginner should use since it's expensive and you'll be practicing writing so many times and it would be a waste of ink. but it actually helped me get used to the pressure, correct thickness and all of that.

Has anyone else experienced their fudenosuke bleeding through the paper occasionally? First I thought it was the paper - I was using a Moleskine before and I am using Leuchtturm at the moment and it didn't happen for a couple of months, but recently my fudenosuke overflew and bled through my Leuchtturm journal as well. Do I just have a faulty one or does anyone else experiencing this occasional bleedthrough?

I use the Zig Brush Color Clean Markers - as far as I know, they are mostly use for drawings (unlike the Zig Dual Brush, which it was even advertised for lettering). You can mix the colors and use them with water as well (same as the Ecoline btw)

The Zig Clean Color (the Real Brush Pens) are actually more similar to a "watercolor" ink - so they are more geared toward that type of work from my understanding. I have them (I actually have most of these different brush pens lol - the love is real) and they actually make really great watercolor "markers" to get more detailed work when watercolor painting as well as laying down base colors. They definitely work for hand lettering but I think they would be better suited for a larger (maybe poster sized) painterly hand lettering where you almost color the lettering in (you could get some really cool blended watercolors). Just wanted to share my experience with those ones! :) Love these stationery showdown videos (and Wix actually - been using since about 2009 when I was in HS.

Megan Cattey that's maybe the one thing I like about the Kuretake brand (zig) they have some specially designed for lettering and some rather nice ones for colouring. Even the mangaka flexablies are quite decent for drawing and lettering if you know what your doing. Downside is they can be expensive, but some of the more elaborate calligraphy ranges are quite easy to get the hang of using. Also just a small correction, the real brushes are waterbased inks that can behave like watercolours, as with most of the ZiG ranges, but are not proper watercolours - just incase anyone reads and makes that mistake (as some people seem to, especially beginners who've never tried using real watercolours before) And like yourself, I quite love them and the Kelidolines range which there's probably a differnce between them but so far it's just colour range options that differ, the ink, how it blends and the real brush nibs on them are exactly the same...but I think one of them is a newer release.

Gemini Journaling there's already wonderful people like the video host who do a wonderful job of that. In truth though, it all comes down to how you think they feel when you use them, as one person's experience differes from another. I don't do bullet journals or writing with these, instead I do illustration so my usage of these is quite different. I like these vids as it helps me find out about other brands I may like to experiment with in future and a matter of getting my hands on some due to limited availability of them in my own country.

Yea - not real watercolors like what you will squeeze out of a watercolor paint tube (and also not like gouache paint either) but that's why I just typed "ink" with the quotes because I didn't really know what else to call them in a short manner. I suppose it would have been better to say a watercolor-like "ink" but *shrugs*. I was more so just trying to comment for anyone else who is interested in them and how they might perform since they were the most different from the other pens compared in the video (since they performed relatively poorly on her comparison scale but do have a great purpose)! I haven't tried anything in the Kelidolines range - I will have to look into it! I love stationery and such (bullet journaling and just overall fun - obvious since I am here on a Stationery Showdown video hahah) but have an art background so I still rely on videos like her Stationery Showdown to decide which pens to try out - since they can add up $$ pretty quickly. :)

Megan Cattey yeah i know how you feel about prices (live in Australia so everything is expensive) but since having kids and unable to get my paints/inks out these have been the ultimate blessing in disguise. I have seen other comparison vids with them and depending on the reviewer and their paper choices the performance of them varies. They're still great to use and can be used as a stepping stone into ink colouring and lettering with real brushes if that's the direction you want to go. Again the range for lettering by the same brand are similar in nib for some of thier pens, so it is possible to use these for the same purpose if your not an illustrator and just want pretty lettering (though the others have replaceable brush nibs & ink refills if you do wruin them & are cheaper than buying an entire pen) though if you do for bullet journals a thicker paper might be required as they do wruin thin paper quite easily if your not careful. (experience in that area with sketchbook journaling, too thin a paper and it makes the paper look like you've tipped too much water/ink in one place.)

I used to have the same problem with the brush. Then I found out it was because of the way I held the pen. Normally I am holding a pen pretty similar to you while writing/lettering. If you hold it the "conventional" way it works better

In terms of price, if you have the money, get the tombow dual brush pens. A pack of 10 if 29.99 at Michael's where I live. I got a discount tho. I believe a 14 dollar discount. For cheaper ones, eh, idk. But, the Tombows are worth it.

I think to beat the intimidation of starting a bullet journal is to go on Pinterest and find lots of inspiration that you can copy from. Go in knowing that you’re going to make a lot of mistakes, but you’re going to learn what you like and don’t like. Once you’ve got your foundation, you just build from there and can get more creative with your spreads with washi tape or doodles or whatever is your style. Hope this helps!!

I'd suggest, if you're alright with black only, the Kuretake Bimonji. It's pretty much my favorite "fine" brush pen. For larger things I use my Kuretake No. 8 but for small lettering the Bimonji is my favorite.

I don’t do calligraphy, (cuz I’m so bad lol) but I do use a journal. I probably should start a bullet journal cuz it would keep me more organized, but I do draw. A LOT! I don’t usually color, but when I do I use color, copics are good. I’ve seen other people use them for bullet journaling too.....
