One of the most useful things I learned in a career as a psychotherapist is that we all have a need to communicate how we feel to others, and that while people who have the insight and the vocabulary can do this by telling people how we feel, those who can't do that - children and undeveloped adults - communicate their feelings unconsciously, by behaving in ways that make the people around them feel the same way they're feeling - scared, confused, angry, depressed, anxious, etc. I learned to check my own internal responses, ask myself how the interaction was causing me to feel, and then probe to see whether that was how the person in front of me was feeling. Often it was. I learned to shift my attention from the details of the conversation to the process underneath it. Often I could short-circuit mind games by stopping, looking someone in the eye, and asking, "Why did you say/do that? What are you hoping will happen?"

As a person who also pursued a career in psychology what Mary is sharing is so spot on, this is why we were told by the Lord that we should raise our children in his ways so that when they are older they will not depart from his truth. There's a lot about Trump's family that reminds me of my own. My father was cruel and chose his second son as the one who would follow him, instead of the first son who was his namesake. First, he damaged my mother with his cruelty and bullying, and then he trained his second son to emulate him, which he did. I walked away from this toxic atmospheric many years ago, and with therapy, I have done a great deal of healing. I'm so grateful for that decision and I view Mary Trump as one of my heroines in life.

First of all, thank you Mary for sharing your story and family to the world. My heart goes out to you. I was also diagnoised with complex PTSD, also steming from childhood abuse. I.have found my way through some counseling and much prayer. You are the only member of your family that I hear talking about this but it has to be tough to see what your uncle has done and yet doing to this country. My hearyfelt prayers for you all. May you continue to find strength through your writing and other ways that you cope. Lastly, I can appreciate your statement about making America a true democracy. Thank you so very much Mary Trump. Everytime I see you speak of your family I tense up because you are also describing my family and parts of my responses within coping with my family. When my mother died in 2018 I was finally able to use the word “abuse” in relation to her. You describe her all the time. My family may not have as much wealth as yours, but we are very privileged in many ways- monetarily included- and we are of the first settlers of the US which is something my mother pushed as one of our great elevators. In this interview you describe your grandfather only allowing one member of your family as having his focus. My mother did the exact same thing. And anyone who was not that focus she would drown in disgust. Life with her was awful. Her parents were wonderful people. So loving. Without them I’d never have survived. They showed me love and respect do exist in this world and my dreams of living with those were my safety raft. I worked very very hard to not allow anything for my mother that would give her the license to come after me. However, I finally had enough less than a year before she died. I informed her that money does not make a relationship and returned a large check she’d given me. I also told her I would no longer be the family’s scapegoat. She kicked me out of her house. We spoke a few times after, but she did not want me there because I would give her a peaceful pain free death through hospice. She wanted everyone to suffer. She wanted a bad death so people would give her empathy after death and place family members in challenges against each other. I learned from her estate that she had cut me out of my grandparents’ financial inheritance she received ten years before she died. She never intended to give to me what my grandparents had wanted. There is such a heading that can come from people like her. Like your uncle. All I think now and my first thoughts when I learned of her death is how sad it is she chose to waste this one life we get. No matter anyone’s spiritual beliefs, we only get this life once. It’s ridiculously easier to aim for kindness, love, respect and decency than for what cruelty brings to living. Thank you for all you share. It always helps me so it must help many many more people. I might tense up and get a bit worried about what will come up for me when I see you, but it is always ultimately better than letting it remain festering somewhere deep inside me. Your sharing allows countless many to work on some of those deeper difficult to reach truths within them. Thank you. You have my blessings.
