The reader of this glorious rendition is the late Tom Fleming whose voice was heard over the years on the BBC commentating on Remembrance Sunday, various royal occasions and the Edinburgh Tattoo coverage. He brings the tale vibrantly to life - a brilliant reading of a masterpiece of poetry.

‘But pleasures are like poppies spread, You seize the flow'r, its bloom is shed; Or like the snow falls in the river, A moment white-then melts forever; Or like the borealis race, That flit ere you can point their place; Or like the rainbow's lovely form Evanishing amid the storm.’ A beautiful metaphor of not only ephemeral periods of gaiety and joy, but life in general

The description of a pub in Ayrshire is still true to this day in so many... whether it be the wee old mans pubs in Troon, Dreghorn, Cumnock etc... Being a regular in one of these pubs is like having a second family. The banter flowing etc...

Damned fine reading. However, it omits the lines : Three lawyers' tongues, turn'd inside out, Wi' lies seam'd like a beggar's clout; Three priests' hearts, rotten, black as muck, Lay stinking, vile in every neuk. From the stanza explaining what was seen in the kirk.

Without doubt the best recital of my favourite poem. In a properly measured way that only a Scot blessed wi his own language, can gie us. Guffy`s needna bother. My flesh crawls at their clumsy attempts... Whits that pented face clown aw aboot? The bard an aw the rest `o us allways could and can, see right through yer sham. CULTURE. Eye we`ve got one! Thanks tae The Bard for his immortal words and inspiration. He too could see the world in a grain of sand.

Beautiful recording, wonderful voice, unfortunately (and ironically) the four brilliant lines after "which even to name would be unlawful" at 6:45 are censored: "Three lawyers' tongues, turn'd inside out, Wi' lies seam'd like a beggar's clout; Three priests' hearts, rotten, black as muck, Lay stinking, vile in every neuk."
@hedwig4106 жыл бұрын
Euphemism - Never heard of these censored lines before, but having studied Burns and this poem since school I can see how a publisher might think it necessary given the political climate at the time. The sentiment is all Burns and the lines would fit absolutely perfectly into the description of all things evil at 'the dance o' witches'

Not bad but the narrator makes a common error that others should avoid to stay true to the original intent and timing of the poem. There should be no pause at all between the lines "And roars out, ‘Weel done, Cutty-sark!’" and "And in an instant all was dark:" because the darkness is, like Burns says, instantly after Tam shouts. These lines are in the same stanza, so no pause.

Stewart, you seem a bit touchy. Was the food bank out of Irn Bru this week? Relax, it was just a harmless bit of Jock-baiting. But Since you brought up politics, yes I did vote tory to avoid a top rate tax rate increase. That way I get to keep more of the money that I am paid for exploiting Scotland's oil.
