This is SO true!!! People aren’t happy that those who are of African decent are starting to claim, embrace and be proud of their African roots, oh well 🤷🏽♀️

You brought up something really important afro Latina is becoming a popular term for ambiguous latinas to use as a way to.....idk. Be black without the struggle. While the visibly dark sisters aren't being acknowledged. Thanks for the video. Really enjoyed the commentary.

What's funny is that I'm an American woman who speaks Spanish & whenever I do, I get "Oh you speak Spanish? What are you? Cubana or Dominicana?" Why couldn't I be Mexican? There's an entire Afro-Mexican community in Costa Chica. African slaves didn't just run up North to be free. Many fled to Mexico, Central & South America. Most of the time Latinos are so SHOCKED, they don't listen to words I use that could tell them where I'm from. The Whitewashing....I mean Brainwashing is far reaching & needs to stop!

When i was a kid Every time I use to see a darker skinned afro latina/latino I use to say wait I thought they were just black but then I researched there are Latinas and Latinos who are from African decent. I would look at them like beautiful exotic black beings. It just amazed me to see how diverse in culture we are. Amara is just perfect, her skin, her hair, her talent, even her presence just automatically draws your attention. Veronica Vega has pure jealousy In her. She can't stand to sit back and see La Negra Queen succeed while she is a struggling local artist who even though she tried to stop Amaras shine couldn't succeed in doing so. That's why amara is all over Tv commercials co hosting talk shows and has a multi million record deal while Veronica somewhere stuck in a rap trap 🤣🤣

You fixed it ❤️ It really is a struggle... When can the world just accept that everyone has their own struggles. The people who "don't see color" are the people blinding themselves because they don't want to face their inner issues. They don't see color because they're having their nasty thoughts and feel the need to hide them. Not seeing color will have you looking foolish.

marie jones Excuse you. As a black woman, I talk about both. Taking time to focus on one subject does not mean that we're bypassing other subjects. I honestly thought that her interview on The Breakfast Club, which is where I first heard about her, was Eurocentric to the point where even she sounded uninformed. People have spoken about this type of thing for a long time within the Pan-Africanist Movement. Speaking Spanish does not mean that an individual is Spanish, Hispanic, or Latino just like speaking English does not mean that an individual is English, Anglo, or Germanic. Latino is a regional distinction for Caucasians. That is why it is not common to see people identify as Euro-Latino. But I absolutely agree with her when it comes to discrimination in the Spanish-speaking market towards people who have characteristics that are more commonly associated with Americans (Indigenous populations) and Africans. For example, Rodner Figueroa was fired from Univision for making racist remarks towards Michelle Obama. However, now that the Obamas are no longer in the White House, he has received a warm welcome over at Telemundo.

Trey Show I think that’s an over intellectualization of her and my general point. Present day, Latino is an ethnicity (tied to region) but not exclusive. There are racially Asian Latinos in Latin America. However, Amara isn’t an academic. She isn’t a sociologist. She isn’t a historian, nor is she pretending or implying that she’s the first person to ever discuss this. What she *does* do however, is use her personal experience to highlight a social issue that directly affects her. The girl is Latina, this is not a language issue. Outside of Spanish speaking markets, eg. America, the same colorism exists internally and externally. There’s a connotation to the word Latina, in English-speaking countries as well, that is anti-Black. By attempting to negate, belittle or detract from her message because she lacks accurate historical vernacular is a bit elitist. Especially when this issue exists on a systematic AND personal level. She may lack knowledge from the former, but her experiences with the latter still align with the greater issue.

Tee, What I meant by my comment is that even though people nowadays feel the need to identify themselves as Hispanics or Latinos, doing so usually implies that they are Eurocentric, whether it is on purpose or subconsciously. Remember that these terms did not exist too long ago. Also, there are people who are from "Hispania" (Spain) and areas that once belonged to the Latin Empire, so identifying as people from Europe is Eurocentric, by its definition. There are plenty of people with American (indigenous) roots who also suffered from the American Genocide and the Columbian Exchange that speak Spanish, have Spanish surnames, are Christian, and have the genes of people who raped their family tree, but identify themselves proudly as Apaches, Navajos, and Seminoles. Her credentials do not make any difference in regards to her argument. There are professors in universities that have said things that are similar to what she said. However, that doesn't make it any less Eurocentric. She is arguing in favor of inclusion and support among people who are Eurocentric and at times, use racist terminologies. Just as Chuck D once said, "The best way to boycott is to build your own," which he has done throughout the years. For the record, I never criticized the way she speaks. I think that her English is impeccable for someone who wasn't born in an English-speaking country. I was sharing my opinion about the overall things she said, which she also would have said in Spanish. Also, I think her argument would have been for effective if she would have just gone out and spoken against colorism from the start, so that even people who don't speak Spanish could relate.

lupe Lopez Everyone knows Sammy Sosa and Big Papi. The word Afro Latino is confusing because it is new. Latin implies Southern Europe and Afro implies Africa, so what did they leave off? America. They were born and raised in America but completely left it off. Should not it be Afro Latino American.

I'm a very light skin Latina and it is absolutely true that afro-Latinos face a degree of racism that I will never face. It is also true that Latin Americans can be very biased and that we need to deal with the colorism and racism in our community. At the same time I don't believe we need to incorporate the "hatred of white people" narrative that has taken over much of the African American community.
@mwinyimwenyi5 жыл бұрын
I don't think black Americans hate white people, they hate racism. Racism is worse in Latin America, yet they pretend not to see color. A lie. That is the worse form of racism.
