Hi Curtis, another great review helping me put this line 150/300C into context vs other products. Increasingly you are becoming one of my 'go to' reviewers, whose opinion(s) I like to check out before buying kit in the sound and light arena. I'm an amateur with lots of stills experience over many years, but now trying to teach myself the tech aspects of video and film making. I have just bought an Amaran 200X S, based in part on your opinions re high SSI ratings for use as a key light. I can see how a 150C might also work as an effects and background light, although as I learn I'm tempted to consider buying a second 200X S head before a 150C (for consistency, more power, spare unit etc). I have learnt a lot from your channel. An excellent YT resource, so naturally I subscribed about a year back 😊.

I distrust the bail (bale?) on all these prosumer units tbh. But they seem to be more robust than previously. I definitely agree that they’re better suited for studio use. WRT fragility comparisons, we should also consider replacement/repair costs. Would the cost of completely replacing one of these units be less than replacing an HMI globe? Repairing a buzzing ballast? I prefer old style tungsten and HMI lighting units because that’s what I’m used to. However, I’m retired now and getting back into it as a hobby (after almost 20 years of doing other things). I think if I was working, I’d rather see a truck filled with mole-richardson and arri conventional lights and more robust LED lights. I’d just feel more confident in the equipment.

I was planning to buy an RGB light like the PIXEL K80 because it's cheaper. Do you think it's better to stick with AMARAN and get an RGB light from them like the 150C or 300C? Or is it better for my small budget to go for the cheaper key light AMARAN 60xs and the RGB 150C?

It depends on how much output you need from your key light. In a space where you can turn off all the other lights and block any light coming in from windows, a smaller light like the 60Xs should be fine. your links are same for both lights. also, i'm confused, the 200x s is 17,000 lm, 90 ssi $350 and 150c is $360 11,000lm. at 74 sii. so why would you buy the more expensive, dimmer, lower sii product?

He 200x S is not an RGB light, it is warm to cool white only.

I bought the new 60 x s about a week ago. I understand their very different lights for different purposes but if you only could buy one which would you go for. It seems like the 150 c is a whole lot more versatile but if I know I’m gonna be using the light as a key light most of the time the 60 x s feels okay and has some convenience advantages. Would love to hear opinions, I’m thinking of sending the 60 x s back

If I didn't already have a bi-color light like the 60x, that would be my first buy. Then add an RGB light later.

@@curtisjudd awesome thank you so much for the advice!!! Yeah this is my first real light I like the convenience of the size and power options more so I probably will end up keeping the 60 x s and uprgrading later to get something more like an affect light

yeah I agree with Curtis. the 60x is a nice little box and it does wonders for me. ill never regret buying it. RGB's are great for additional creative lighting for coloration. everyone needs a few solid x or d lights for primary.

No, these are full RGB lights plus bi-color white light. They don't come with a focusing lens, but with their Bowens mounts, you can add one or a soft box or barn doors, or a fresnel lens, or a host of other light modifiers.

Probably never going to happen, but you can bet on DJI. The new sensor on their inspire 3 is insane, a stacked 8k bsi sensor not made by Sony. It was a joint program by DJI and a Chinese CMOS maker, so DJI can now make cameras without relying on Sony sensor.

The 150c & 300c have +/- G/M this makes them more accurate as far a color reproduction and ability to match the room environment. The 200X S while good, still is not color accurate to a 0.0 correction gel, due to the the lack of +/- G/M. The 150c & 300c can be. So in terms of color accuracy and dialing the exact color you need, the new ones are much better, IMO. Great review!

Easier to match other lights, but not necessarily more accurate, depending on what you compare it to. But yes, these have been really good lights for us.

Thanks, as always, for the fantastic video. Out of curiosity, why does no one ever use umbrellas for video? This has built in umbrella mount. And umbrellas would seem to be BY FAR cheapest and also more portable. Is there a reason no one ever talks about using them? Also, IF you use umbrella, is common wisdom to SHINE THROUGH or Bounce ? Umbrellas are absolutely an option and valid approach. However, their big downside is that they spill light EVERYWHERE. So if that look works for what you’re trying to do, then it is a great option. But if you want a more complex lighting design with multiple layers, then other modifiers like softboxes are often preferred.

@@curtisjudd thanks so much for clarifying . And 2 more quick questions. With umbrellas what is the different for shoot through for bounce ? And COMPLETELY TANGENTIALLY , since you are the god and guru of audio, what are your thoughts of this new trend of stereo RECEIVERLESS wireless mics with built in 32bit float audio . And, do you know if it’s technically possible for a camera with a wireless revievef yo ever internally record 32bit float audio embedded in the h.265 video ? Does h.265 standard allow it, can 2.4ghz transmit it. It would seem to be a dream if future Sony FX 3 v2s etc could have DJI MIC 2 solutions like Pocket 3 /Dji mic. For silly Bed & Beer 🍺 Vloggers like Sweetie and me the things happening with audio with the DJi Pocket 3 and DJi Mic 2 are AMAZING. and things no one eve though to ask for the recent ADDITIONSL separate internal scratch audio recorded JUST IN CASE wireless fails or you want the ambient audio of internal. @@iamnotapoet Which stereo body pack recorders are you referring to specifically, please?
@iamnotapoet Жыл бұрын
@@curtisjudd I think the not-yet-release DJI MIC 2 kit (that will replace DJI MIC stereo kit) will be AMAZING. Compact , 32bit float and MOSTLY works with DJI mic for RECEIVER LESS stereo audio going straight from mic to camera. No need to plug in mic receiver to the camera. I do think this can and should be the future . Particularly for run and gun. All you do it turn on mics and turn on camera. No cables, no adapters , no mic receivers. Turn on * 2 and hit record. Granted , for the foreseeable future that would probably tie mics to cameras. But maybe not. What are your thoughts on this potential future. DJI has it already with Pocket 3 and (in mono with Action 4). But I think Insta 360 needs to do this for x4 (360 camera obviously REALLY would benefit from no receiver ). But Sony should make a stereo 32bit mic DJI mic 2 like system. Would be great for next Sony cameras. But I don’t hear much chatter about this industry wide. Just what DJI has done. Do you see a future in this kind of change ? - Eric ZORK Alan & Sweetie [ Professional Poets & Bed 🛏️ & Beer🍺 Vloggers ]
@curtisjudd Жыл бұрын
@@iamnotapoet I see - by "stereo" you mean two channel wireless microphone systems, got it. 32-bit float is a lot to send over the air, especially in the 2.4GHz range which is often saturated with WiFi and other consumer wireless activity. It isn't impossible, but there's more work to do. In some of the pro systems, they do this in slightly different ways, 24-bit float an example. I don't know if they'll tie mics to cameras - essentially have in-built wireless receivers in the camera. That'll move some of the cost to the camera which means higher camera price, whether you need the receiver or not...so my guess is that it is not likely to be a widely implemented pattern. Maybe in vlogging cameras. But that's just a guess.
