All I have to say is BRAVO!!! I felt like I saw Lucia di Lammermoor. Solid singing and acting and story telling free of pretentious stage settings and directors trying to make a name for themselves. Thank you for using period costumes and settings (so that the libretto makes sense!) and doing Donizetti's work justice. I found this to be a much more enjoyable experience than what I've gotten from Rome and the Metropolitan Opera lately. Thank you. Well Done!

I think I agree with you about liking a period setting. I'm going to see the Met Opera's new production of Lucia on May 21 and have just been reading about the new staging - Lucia is a drug addict and it's taking place in an American Rust Belt town that features a pawn show and motel. It sounds even worse than the staging of Rigoletto in Las Vegas where Gilda is shot hiding in the trunk of a car. I guess I'm not as open to new approaches as I could be. I wonder what they'll use for the fountain.

Yes but also in a traditional setting the words of the drama have to be respected. In act I both Lucia and Alisa are frightened by what Lucia is telling. Why are they smiling? And althaugh they're singing very well considering the context, this is a dark drama, and if you smile singing... all the tension goes away. The same about Edgardo. In act I he enters and he has not yet decided if he has to forget hate because he loves her. When he gives her the ring the libretto says "con improvvisa decisione", "with a sudden decision". Everything of this has gone away from the scene.

AND Lucia doesn't commit suicide! She dies out of the scene by crazyness and consumption.

Having just this day watched, on KZbin, productions of this opera from Madrid and Barcelona (both cities I have lived in overr the years) I am proud to say this is the more authentic production.. I am as against modernizing period works as I am for using women in pants roles in opera when there is a flood of classically trained countertenors currently restricted to concert work. Call me old fashioned but, as Tevya says, :"Tradition." Lucia as a drug addict ? Please stop this stupidity.

I came here out of curiosity after seeing _The Fifth Element_ and was like, that first part was beautiful, where was it from? Then Google was like, "it's the mad scene from an opera called _Lucia di Lammermoor."_ Ok, show me. Next thing I know, I've sat through a 2 hour long opera and I don't regret it.

Very nice! Marvelous singing, and I enjoyed a production that looks like the eighteenth century, since that is the libretto’s setting.

С помощью искусства люди научились наслаждаться страланиями. Сюжет напоминает Ромео и Джульетту. Оптимизм заключается в том, что на том свете герои будут вместе.

Thiat was a really good production. Wonderful performers. All of them. Good stage setting. The only complaint I have is the sound recording. Baritons completely overpowered everyone else. Other than that, it was great.

Mary Taylor Ibarra has a wonderful voice.. she would be a great Waltraute, a.great Kundry.. Hope to hear her singing some Richard Stauss Letzte Lieder, or Brahms' Alt Rhapsody.. I'm sure she would excell.. But when I search for her here on YT or on Google, I find nothing.. How can I hear more of her ?
@Aneldarx5 жыл бұрын
Why are they smiling and laughing during Lucia's first aria? Do they understand what is she singing about???
@opusquatre3 жыл бұрын
I guess Lucia is described here as childish, not totally mature and even more, psychologically fragile, able to jump from joy to sadness, from fear to excitement.. That introduces very well the mad scene in act III.. And Alisa smiling or mocking her ghost vision is nothing surprising, to me.. and let's remember the reason why they both are present near this fountain : Lucia has a rendez-vous with her lover.. Even if the news she has to tell him are not optimistic, I can understand she feels happy to meet him.. I'm not disturbed by this apparently light-hearted behaviour.. le calme avant la tempête..You can compare with kzbin.info/www/bejne/e16ano2BhsuBnJI where Lucia only smiles in the Quando Rapito aria, which probably looks more obvious..

1:11 for the best part. ROH made a hash of this opera trying to turn it into racism. They have politically corrected themselves into oblivion. He couldn't even sing and they added a ton of smut.

Complimenti.
