thanks for all the info on the species tulips ... I'll have to give them a try next year !! one thing I'll have to disagree with you on, however ... I think pink and orange look fabulous together - haha!!! I guess our differences of opinion is what helps us all to create fabulous gardens. Happy Christmas to one and all!!

Jim, you're going to have a beautiful show in the spring! Tulips and oak trees, darn squirrels! 🐾🐿 I have to lay 1/2 inch hardware cloth down over my tulips, or the squirrels dig them up and either eat or replant them for me. I pin it down with landscape staples and then cover it with leaf mulch. Since I've started doing this, the squirrels leave them alone. The only problem with this is remembering to remove the hardware cloth when the tulips start coming up in the spring, and I don't always remember to do that, lol! Have a Merry Christmas.~Margie🎄⛄❄

Squirrels and I are not friends. They dig up my baby plants. I bought some cloches from Gardeners Supply and will if the squirrels will be deterred.

@@kathrynmettelka7216 I know how you feel, I just got my 5 chicken wire cloches from Gardeners Supply earlier this week. Three with the extensions and two without. I sure hope they keep the squirrels out!

I’ve gotten several Amaryllis bulbs like yours over the years and have planted them in the ground near the driveway, sidewalks and out in the backyard beds. They come back year after year, no problems. What a show! I’m near Wilmington on the coast. 🤠

I started planting the clusiana tulips like the lady janes 15 years ago in North Carolina zone 8. They have returned and multiplied. The past couple of years I have branched out to other species tulips like lilac wonder. Hoping they will do the same.

I've had reasonably good luck with Amarillas outdoors in zone 8a. Just don't tolerate much competition.

Some amaryllis hybrids are tropical and others are subtropical, the latter being hardy in zones 7-10. There’s several yards in my Virgina neighborhood with startlingly arresting in-ground specimens. Of course, these flower in the spring, not midwinter. Brent and Becky’s nursery sells many that will thrive in southern gardens. My sister gave us an amaryllis bulb encased in _wax_. It’s sitting on the dining room table, about to open its flowers. I have no idea if it will survive outside, but I’m going to plant it outside this March, just to see.

At this rate my amaryllis will not be ready until mid January. It really wasn't getting enough light when I first woke it up. Foliage looks good now, I do hope it blooms, it would be the third year in a row it bloomed.

Last year I had piles of acorns-like walking on marbles. This year very few. I know it’s been dry and warm but do you notice these extremes? Love the species tulips. They’ll be beautiful this spring 💐
@canuckviolet33223 жыл бұрын
Yes the oak trees definitely have cycles of boom and bust. The booms are called 'mast' years. They are not absolutely regular and science is not sure exactly what causes them but weather & pollinator availability may be part of it. Also not consistent across the board - we had many, many acorns this year!! (AVL)

Hey Jim, if you have the time..... I have someone in Texas wondering if Leylands, Green Giants and Cryptomeria would be a good screen in East Texas climate ? We're talking 20 - 6 foot trees..... a price or recommendation & where I could buy these locally. Also a few 6 foot magnolias. Thanks !

Do you keep watering your amaryllis or do you water once and then wait for some growth? I repotted mine but I’m not seeing any growth yet and wonder if I should water again.

I’m guessing the tulips you planted by the rosemary will appreciate the good drainage. Is the drainage the same at the other sites? Also, some of these tulips have interesting foliage, like the variegated T. praestans 'Unicum'

Hey Jim, I am in the deep south - central/south Alabama - I got 100 of the clusiana type tulips to try, do you think these are a decent tulip for our climate? Winters here are typically cool and wet, with regular warm ups and cool downs. Rarely below freezing during the winter, and when it does it is short lived.

Am I the only person that has VOLE problems? I've even put tulips in 1/4" mesh cages underground and the little blighters cut off every stem as it emerged from the cage! I could see the underground holes on both sides where the entered and exited the buffet. 😡😡😡. I've only planted tulips in containers since. Anyone know if the species tulips are Rodent-resistent?
