Differences Between The MINI N14 & N18 Engines

Own a 2010 R55 JCW and just replaced the low-pressure fuel pump, fuel filter, water pump, crossover pipe, thermostat housing, starter motor, cabin noise maker, coolant reservoir, spark plugs and coils, tensioner, fog light housings, intercooler, and VVT solenoid all in my driveway yesterday. Tomorrow I'm going replace the timing chain and guides, turbo coolant pump, valve stem seals, front and rear rotors and pads, whole valve cover when I put it back together, and I'm wanting to replace the turbo and all of the oil and coolant lines. All this work sparked due to a leak in the coolant crossover pipe. Figured why not just replace everything. This car CANNOT leave me stranded EVER!

Really excellent video, thanks for putting it up. I have an N14 in my JCW, it has some nice upgrades including a Neo Bros turbo, front mount intercooler and lots of other stuff that gives me just over 220bhpp and a massive 318NM torque. It pulls cleanly from tickover and is quite docile round town but when you poke it with a stick it wakes up and performance is fantastic. It was all rebuillt 14k miles ago with all the right bits used so hopefully it will last me a few years. It's hard to think of a car that is more fun than a well sorted JCW.

My Mini Cooper S R56 2012 Model has the N18 1.6 litre Turbo Petrol engine. It’s a nice engine especially in Sports Mode and mated to the AISIN 6 speed AT Transmission. Nice throaty growl and trigger happy performance. A very nice little car indeed.

@@antonistheo4988 its a nice engine. An old engine now- developed by Peugeot and BMW. As with any ten year old ‘prestige european’ car all the parts need babying and care and refurbishment and replacement as necessary from time to time. Regular checks and maintenance is an absolute must. No shortcuts there! In fact I would even say ‘over maintenance’ is a good thing for these cars to see if there is any little trouble that can be preventively sorted. But the fact is these are beautiful cars. A real joy to drive. Use them properly and drive them daily and have fun with them and generally they will stand with you. But it is true they are a bit temperamental and finicky, like most racehorses also are. Ive clocked more than 20000 kms in the 2.5 years that I have had my R56 and yes Ive had to spend time and money to make sure its in good nick. But this is also because during the first 33000kms of its life with the previous owner it wasnt maintained quite as efficiently as it should have been. Like I said one can take absolutely no shortcuts with these cars! Engine oil and filter changes for example are better done more often than not…at shorter intervals. Better for the car and better because its preventive… And all this Im saying is based on the harsh climatic and road conditions of India where I live… such places need more maintenance.

For those who interested. The N13B16 unit found in the 114i-118i F20 and 316i/320i ed already has the forged Mahle Pistons. It comes with Vanos intake and exhaust side and VVT. Basically BMW just converted the N18 for longitudial mount. It's a great engine. Tuned mine to 230BHP with more mods to come.

@@wellwh0 100ml per 1000km is not much at all. With a proper oilcooler it would be even less. The thing is, these engines are designed to run very hot, with oil temps. up to 120° celsius under heavy load. But thats not a big deal when oil changes are performed more frequently.

Fantastic video! I have (in dec 2021) a stage one tuned n18 countryman cooper s, build 2010, had it since new.. I dont know what it is but I love this car even though I have definitely bought this car twice! I have had every single problem that has ever being documented as a problem with this car but I am still a proud owner. It is really fast, it makes me happy... The tune is only a relatively new thing... At 30k km it dropped all its coolant, got towed... At 60k km it had a timing chain. At 90k km the vanos solenoids were so clogged it shat a oil pump solenoid. It has had a new wiring loom, a new computer and now at 145k km it needs a hpfp (fuel pump) but I recon ill go to the grave with this car... It has cost me so much money BUT when it is healthy it fucken hammers.... Side note... The tune was done on a dyno, its got an upgraded intake, head studs and intercooler... All of the problems listed are because it was literally one of the first n18 motors to roll off the plant.... Magna styer in Austria.... It fucks me often but it is a love hate relationship.... She is a keeper..

Hey, Good stuff on the channel. I just purchased a 2012 Countryman S and love it. N18 engine. One question. This car came with Sirius XM but I cannot get to work. Sirius has tried to refresh the signal but nothing. I do not see the Radio ID when I try to pull it. Any ideas? Anyone else has come across this issue ? Thank you for all the content ! Ernie

Some great info in there ...many thanks 👍 Just swapped my 2011 Cooper S with JCW Aero Kit only for 2013 JCW .....both in red/black....had both for a week so could compare the feel on some favourite roads. Big difference , engine feel and somehow less crashing into potholes even with the run-flats. Old car managed to get through at least 3 tyres in 30k miles and a dented from rim. Miss my old HK audio though on the new car......will investigate some speaker upgrades and Front/Rear channel swap for the bass channels. Cheers 👍

N14 will consume more oil - N18 is lower maintenance - All depends on budget and don't ever stretch yourself to buy any car - Always have a spare £1000 set aside

@@johnharrisonschulz Not really as the N12 doesn't have the torque to completely ruin the engine like an N14. However regular oil & filter changes are needed along with updated tensior. Like a cambelt it will be need to be changed at some point so be aware of it. Nothing is ever lifetime and it will be need replacing. Stick with all the advice in the video and you will be good. I will be shooting a video soon on the timing chain so I will try and give as much as advance as i can as per this video. Thanks for commenting, subscribing and watching the video

Peugeot hasn't dropped the engine. The THP/PureTech 1.6 engine is still being used in the range. PSA is still very much using it. My 21 3008 is an euro 6 Ep6fdt. Their upcoming PHEV still use them as the ICE part. With ICE being phased out I expect them to use it until they go full electric. Apart from Mazda which does very Mazda things.. The rest are pretty much soldiering on with their current engine designs with incremental updates.

One thing you did not mention is the N18 has Valvetronic so there is no throttle body. I have a Coupe or R58 with this. It increases power and fue economy a little. Not great on high revving engines but low end torgue is better. It reduces the throttle by reducing recuding valve lift on intake valves. Mine has not had fuel pump or oil pump problems but a few cooling system problems

N18 still uses a throttle body. The throttle body is there incase the valvetronic was to fail. Also N12, N16, and N18 series engines in America all came with valvetronic. The differences being dual or single VANOS (VVT). Oh and of course the N12/16 being naturally aspirated. Valvetronic simply controls the opening of the intake valves to tenths of a mm so that the engine can breathe at idle without the need for the throttle body. This results in smoother idle and engagement with near zero throttle lag (with a tune), as you don't have to wait for a throttle to flip open, and air to be pulled into the manifold and then the cylinder. The eccentric shaft does all the adjustments right at the valve tip, with a less restricted intake manifold as the throttle body is held in the WOT position at all times. It's not without its faults though. Eccentric shafts can fail and that's a costly repair. Also, the throttle bodies on N18's are notorious for failing and not setting codes. If you get that annoying stumble, then surge in power when you mash the throttle pedal, chances are you have a stuck TB blocking airflow.

If you plan on keeping the car stock, then get the 2012 Cooper S with the N18. However, if you are planning to tune/race or track then the 2009/10 JCW N14 is the better car to have as the engine is strong in the JCW given its different pistons etc

Alot of the issues were ironed out with the N18 but like with any car the timing chain will need replacing at some point as it will stretch over time

The warning signs come before it lets go with the rattling chain from a cold start. Regular oil changes are needed, along with getting the updated chain tensioner

I'm looking for a 2014 Cooper S model, I have been told it has a R56 (N18) engine, not the F56 engine that was also introduced around that time. The F56 is supposed to be better. JCW Adventures ok interesting. I have seen a few people how have swapped the N14 engine for the N18 engine but it is a huge amount of work. It basically involved transplanting the whole loom and modules from an N18 car into the N14 car. Swapping the 270bhp Peugeot engine into an N18 car may be a bit easier than into an N14 car.

Just to note Peugeot has not moved on from this engine but merely rebranded it to PureTech. I'm part of car group that has many owners of the latest euro 6 EP6FDT Peugeot engines in the new 3008/308 gti etc and the reliability has greatly improved and seem to fix all the issues. There are owners with 150K-200k km with just basic maintenance and the group is 300 strong. This engine has really come a long long way. I believe its even better then the B series bmw engines in terms of pedigree. 8 years in a row winner is no easy feat.

I still love the engine in my MINI as it's been good to me. The B series didn't start off well in the beginning but those issues have been ironed out.

Borg Warner K03 turbo. The turbos can we swapped from N14 to N18 and N18 to N14. The N18 turbo had revisions as it has an extra hole on the compressor side to support a coolant line. You won’t have any issues using either turbo.

I have an N14 and I have done 135,000 miles plus in mine from new. I love my N14 over an N18 as its rawer but the N18 is better engine maintenance wise due to the fixes.

I'm not sure if you addressed this but the complaints of excess oil consumption seem prevalent among pre-LCI 2nd Generation engines (N14?). I read somewhere that the N14 only has two piston rings, instead of three. Is that correct?

I was under the impression they all had 3 piston rings. The oil consumption is down to pcv system and different cyclinder linings plus valve stem seals. I have actually found a product that has literally solved my oil consumption problem. Review of it coming soon…

I must have only just missed out on the N18 engine. My Mini Coupe JCW was built 23/10/11 (but classed as a 2012 model). By just looking at the characteristics on the top of the engine it has the appearance of the N14. So at 6:26 thats what mine looks like. At almost 50k kms Shes been great. Ive owned it since 2016 with 20K kms and service it myself. Only issue was coolant temp sensor went bad at 20k and right now I may have an issue with my High pressure fuel pump (cold starts run real rough but after 15secs she runs smooth). Known issue with them apparently. Other then that shes been a great car. edit: Yes the HPFP was failing. Replaced it and shes good again. Seems a bit upsetting these things failing with such low kms. Disappointing!

With the cooper S it was a safe bet that you got the N18 with the LCI R56 here in Europe (so from 2011 model onward). By contrast, I have never seen a N18 JCW R56 here, and that is certanly true for cars built and registered in 2011 and 2012. I have only seen N18 coupes, roadsters and GP2. It's like JCW hatchbacks with N18 never existed. And i'm searching for N18 JCW hatch for a while now.

Cooper S N18 won't have the JCW power levels even if it has the JCW tuning kit. The max power it has with the tuning kit is 200 BHP. It's definitely a mistake.

The only real problematic issue with the N14, is poor maintenance from Non-Car People owners. And better cooling is helpful in the JCW's....otherwise, they make great engines.

This engine is considered the LEAST reliable engine in Europe!!! The cooling system is the worst I have worked on, what with that stupid friction wheel that disengages/engages the water pump or the overly complicated thermostat housing,/plastic water pipes.It's a modified PSA,Peugeot/Citreon,engine. French garbage IMO! At least Mercedes build their own engines!

@@Jcwadventures Sure buddy..lmao Mine had under 50k miles when the vacuum pump decided to seize up which locked my cam in place destroying the engine. The n14 has so many common problems. Go to any mini forums for the n14 and you'll see what trash this engine is.
