I've been following The Weeknd since late 2011. And when I tell you this man takes you on a rollercoaster, I mean that shit. Almost all of his music is tied together. It's his life story. He's telling you when he first dropped out of school, living homeless, chasing woman and of course doing drugs (Trilogy). Then he tells you about him getting money, becoming famous, being in a different world (touring), and of course women and drugs (Kissland). Then he gave us his inside edition of what mainstream and Hollywood is really like while still chasing women and drugs (Beauty Behind The Madness). Then being what the mainstream and Hollywood people want, to bring the numbers and money up. With more women and drugs (Starboy). Now he's showing us how mainstream has changed him but he just wants to be himself and he wants to give his OG fans what he hasn't since Kissland. At this point his women and drug chasing is getting old but that's all he knows (My Dear Melancholy). Now, After Hours, is a big rift between his old self to his new mainstream self. He's getting tired of the same shit but again that's all he knows. Almost as if he's crying out for it to stop but it just won't. It's a never ending cycle. Chapter 7 is a long ways away but I have a feeling it's going to be something totally different and I can't WAIT!!
@twentyonetortas59214 жыл бұрын

Same! Always got that impression, even in his earlier works he often talks about substance and girls and loneliness and after all these break ups apparently he's always been heartless? I feel like "escape from LA" was about them being friends with benefits. That's why he was singing about how she's talking to him about all of the different men she's been with "pillow talk" ( trying to hurt him) but deep down he knows that he's engraved in her mind ( she still loves him ). So basically she didn't cheat on him just trying to provoke him .
@deslovespancakes71874 жыл бұрын
Oh and also with the whole "flex " thing. I feel like he's saying that all of those things that he has he hasn't had the time to enjoy them and he doesn't really care about his house or pool because "this house is not a home without my baby". Basically his relaxing comes from his interactions with his fans because LA only accuses him of stuff and the paparazzi are following him not allowing him to have his own personal life.

This album reminds me a lot of Pink Floyd's The Wall, which is a story-album that tells the depressing and drug-induced story of a man as he fails to cope with his life and his past. He's clearly flawed, which the songs show with his drug abuse, destructive mood swings, fascist hallucinations, etc. But you also hear the helpless sorrow in his voice and the numbness from his drug abuse as he doesn't really know how to cope. It adds to the insanity since its a mix of progressive rock and psychidellic rock. Long story short: The storytelling of a broken man descending into madness is one of my favorite album concepts. Go listen to the Wall. And also thank you D'Angelo for introducing and getting me into the Weeknd. I love this album so much

Bro the deluxe album has an ending for ya. I was really hoping you’d cover that here too. I think the whole album is just about his relationship with this girl. The ups and downs of a relationship. Until i bleed out might have been about him hurting himself but i think personally it was just him saying “i want to stop thinking about you because it hurts”. Because in the deluxe album, the song “Nothing Compares” talks about how no one can compare to her, “Missed You” is him finally admitting he misses her and Final Lullaby is him coming to terms with the fact that he cant make her stay in a relationship she doesnt want. So he sings a lullaby to put their relationship to a rest. Either way i love this album haha and im glad people are realizing how good it was.

I myself am a huge fan of the weeknd and although I'd want to back him up usually, I completely agree with this. The messages going from each songs are almost like he's in denial and then comes back to loving Bella in a repeated cycle. I found the album was still amazing in my opinion, I knew once I heard the single 'after hours' before the album released that the production and vocals would be incredible and give off a different sound than starboy due to his realisation that with all that money, you can still be unsatisfied. With the weeknd's music though, I find myself more encapsulated by the sounds and vocals than the subject matter of the song, which made me love the alum even more, as some of the songs reminded me of other songs from every part of his discography. For example, if you listen to 'coming down', you can see it has a similar feel to 'repeat after me(interlude)' and the outro of 'until I bleed out' has very similar vocals to him on 'next', which is, in my opinion, the song where he seems the most emotional even whilst singing it. Overall, After hours would have to be my 3rd favorite album by him, with Trilogy being first and Kiss Land being second. He managed to convey a clear message to listeners and maybe even Bella with his emotions still not being silenced by the huge focus on perfect production and over-edited vocals, which is something you can't say about may artists. He really needs to get a handle on things in his personal life though, and either move on with the relationship or make sure that he can keep the promises that he says in his music and never let Bella go again if he gets into another relationship with her. Great album. Get off the drugs Abel.

I have been a fan of Abel’s since 2012 when Trilogy dropped. To me, Trilogy always has and always will be his best album. I really love all of his albums, but there’s something about Trilogy that speaks to me more. It’s an album I always come back to and can listen to on repeat over and over again and never get sick of. Having said this, I’m not the biggest fan of After Hours, but I still love and will continue to support him and everything he does. I’ve been here since 2012, and I will continue to be here! Maybe this is an album that will grow on me the more I listen to it. Not sure. We’ll see. Thanks for this video, D’Angelo.

Crybaby by Melanie Martinez is also a really good one. It’s someone about herself but mainly about a character. It has harsh and real world topics so it’s a little dark in some of the songs. Her newer album K-12 is also good, the film on her channel is great. The K-12 songs are named things related to school (Detention, teachers pet, recess, the principal, etc.) but are really about other things. Some people explain it in videos but I can easily explain all of them bc I do a lot of research. Crybaby is the same way, with the names of the songs being related to child/baby things (supply cup, training wheels, tag your it, Mrs. potato head, etc) but again are related to real life things and sorta dark things too. Sorry if I talked to long I just wanted to give an explanation/ preview on the albums if you listen to them. Have a good day ❤️

Funny. I’ve only heard the songs “Blinding Lights” and “In Your Eyes” by themselves and love them. But it’s really cool hearing about this album as a full story, and how those songs create the narrative. It’s kinda like listening to “Another Brick in the Wall” by Pink Floyd, thinking it’s just an anti-authority anthem but it adds to the narrative of a man who builds an emotional wall around himself throughout his life, but it hurts the people around him.

For a bit of context, Abel said in an interview that the song In Your Eyes was told from two different perspectives. It's about two people who are in love with each other but constantly keep fucking with each other. I think that adds a whole new element to the story. Also it seems to be a widely accepted theory that the entire album is a love letter to Bella Hadid. Personally I think she inspired big parts of the album but I don't think it's all about her.
