T Bag this is the stupidest comment. All of canada is "bear country", yet all we do here is hike, mountain bike, backcountry ski/snowboard, etc. (ie. enjoy the outdoors). So what are we supposed to do, stay inside because we live in "bear country"? Firearms aren't necessary (and I know lots of people who have seen or been approached by bears and/or cougars, including myself), but you have to take certain safety precautions like making noise, carrying mace, etc, and just generally stay aware of your surroundings and know what to look for when there are large predatory animals around.

Actually the guy with the Mt. lion did exactly what you're supposed to do in that situation. Large cats especially Mt. lions attack their prey from behind so this is a case of a curious kitty. So if one is close and watching a person you have to make eye contact and appear like your not worth the trouble the cat would get from you. The mt. lion would have definitely attacked him if it decided he was a weaker animal, which is probably why it didn't attack him from behind. Big cat probably doesn't come across humans on a regular basis. As far as bear and the cyclers all you can do is keep an eye on them. Bear doesn't care which way you're facing if it wants to attack you. Also for being large animals they are surprisingly stealthy and nimble.So if you see one a bit of a ways off you need to keep an eye on it. You glance away for just a moment and they'll disappear on you just to pop up from the blind side and get you 5 minutes later.

Ever meet a bear Dougy doug? Unless they face you and aren't far away they kinda look like a dark funny looking lump. Until they move, very fast. Maybe they are a fuzzy rock even. Or they can also look like a large dog if they are sideways to you. And if that can't tell you the smell will. We had one that walked past our house windows in the summer every night and it smelled like a walking dump. Nasty smell and an evil tempered animal.
