I will say it again-Susan you teach me so much that applies to everything I do even though pastel is not my primary art form . I use pencils, pastels and paints mostly in adult coloring books but have also ventured to more advanced work with portraits of people and animals because of your art theory instruction. I have been applying the warmer & darker in front/vertical with cooler & lighter in the back/horizontal and suddenly I see more depth and shadow in my focal points which I have always found a challenge to do in coloring books. I can not wait to start using this formal now as well.

Hi Susan Glad to attend such a lovely lesson, informative as always but what I did initially was buy individual sticks everytime I had to paint which was infacf tiresome as students pastels aren't of good quality and the ones which are good, are expensive. But to say that's how I accumulated all my pastel sticks XD. This session is just flawless and gold in its entirety. Can't thank you enough, sis. Love to everyone in states.
@monetcafe2 жыл бұрын
Hello my friend, yes, getting the lower quality pastels can be frustrating. And since the good ones are expensive it's good to know we don't have to have hundreds of pastels to paint lovely paintings. So glad you like the lesson and I pray you are doing well with your studies!!!

I have a question . On photo you have landscape day time , you create lovely picture as if it dawn time , orange sun, lavander greenery . Why ?
@monetcafe Жыл бұрын
That’s a good question, and I think it’s because I just often like to get exploratory with color. Sometimes it’s just because it suits my mood or sometimes it might be because those are the pastels that I have near me, ha ha.

Susan, what type of pastels do you use? I mostly paint with watercolor and want to try my hand with pastels. There are different types… Soft, oil, chalk? Any suggestions for combining watercolor and pastels?
@monetcafe2 жыл бұрын
Hi Carole, I use soft pastels (not oil) and there are so many different brands. Of course, the best brands are the most expensive (lol) and I always recommend using artist grade pastels and not student grade. For example, if you go to your local craft store you’ll get pastels that are more Binder than pigment… Basically this is more like chalk. The artist grade pastels have a high percentage of pigment and that is why they are so bright and vibrant. They range in degrees of softness… I started out with a set of Rembrandt pastels that may not be known for having the most vibrant color, but they’re a bit more affordable. Some of my favorite professional brands are… Unison, Sennelier, Terry Ludwig, and Jack Richeson (hand rolled). Hope that helps and if you decide to give it a go you’ll find plenty of instructional tutorials on my channel. Many artists who try this medium fall in love with it.

I use only soft pastels (not oil pastels). I find they are more versatile and vibrant with color. I have an Amazon Shop with many of the soft pastels I recommend for beginners. I hope this is helpful! This is a link to my main page, but you can click on any subheading. One is called "Beginner Basics for Pastel Artists".www.amazon.com/shop/monetcafewithartistsusanjenkins?ref=cm_sw_em_r_inf_own_monetcafewithartistsusanjenkins_dp_SQ0u1IrtBGC0q
