Amazing Deck Transformation - Time Lapse || Semi Freestanding Deck

In this video of this amazing deck transformation, ‪@Sharonshesofabulous‬ and I will not only transform an existing deck but go through the entire process of building a "semi" freestanding deck extension. I say semi, because the new deck will not be attached to the house via a ledger board but it will be attached to the original deck which solidifies left to right movement. Y-bracing is still needed in the front to stop both front to back swaying and left to right swaying. This deck building is SOLID! It meets and exceed all local code requirements.
More videos will be coming to break down various aspects of this deck build but if you are handy, this simple full time lapse should answer many, if not all, questions you may have.
We chose to go with Deckorators' black aluminum round deck balusters and Eapele deck railing brackets connectors to give it more of a modern look and added both powered and solar powered lights throughout. This build took time and effort but was well worth the final result. The vide is just amazing during the day and at night. The canopies provide superior protection from the sun and both canopies have screens that can be wrapped around the seating areas to protect us from the insects.

Great job, nice design, good attention to detail! I used a 4x6 post in corner to eliminate the 2 post design. I did this 20 years ago on a 4’ high, 16 x 16’ run on my deck, everything is still in good condition, have had to replace about 1/4 of the white cedar top planks. Super structure is like new. Deck is 16 x 48’ cantilever design, using all green wood except the top planks (white cedar). Foundation is 13….10”x48” deep poured concrete posts (with rebar, frost line is 42”) level with the ground, using 2x10 joists and put together beam that’s 2@ 2x10, plus 1/2” green plywood filler, 48’ long. Deck is 20” high from the ground, fully skirted with cedar planks. Also installed in deck before putting the top on ……3 outlets (one the outside of the deck, hinged cover for grill rotisserie, others in floor with removalable deck plank covers), and a 1/2” black steel gas line with 2 quick connect ports for a natural gas Weber grill (same grill still in operation after 20 years, rotisserie motor has worn out and replaced 3 times). Gas line has 2 remote shut-offs, one at other end of deck, 14’ away, other in basement. Deck has 2 stair cases, one in middle and other at other end in corner. Perimeter seating built in, rather then fencing. I’m in a Chicago suburb.

This was very satisfying to watch. It looks amazing. Your fortunate to have your queen getting in the trenches with you man. I’m about to start a similar project(free standing deck not attached to house. Mine will be maybe 15x10. Why Did you choose 4x4 and not 6x6 post? Why not use sono tubes and metal Simpson post bases? Why not continue post up to act as railing supports? What part of country are you in? By no means am I questioning your skill, I’m just gathering information since I’ve seen it done a few ways. thanks for posting this.

Short answer…Cost! Using 6x6, you would need a 16” diameter footer. With 4x4 you only need a 12” diameter footer. As you saw, I used an 8” diameter auger. 4x4 are plenty strong for this deck and it’s a drop girder design whereas I used post caps to secure vs notching a 6x6. Sono tubes are great if you are using a bobcat or something like that to dig the holes. Also very useful if you are using post brackets. Treated wood encased in concrete has never been an issue for me. It’s stronger as well. Base brackets are great for the next person who has to redo the deck but….typically when people are redoing their decks, they are also redesigning so the post may very well be in different locations. Couldn’t continue post up because they are support for the dropped girder. I’m in the Triad of NC. I had 3 designs where 2 of the 3 used 6x6 and a ledger to the house. This design was the cheapest and most practical for my situation. Thanks for watching!

I’m on a tight budget so i was able to salvage a ton of older trex decking and framework from someone locally at no cost. Only downside is it was already screwed down so it has screw holes every 16”. My deck has to be free standing since it’s going against an enclosed porch on a Chicago bungalow and a ledger probably won’t work.

Hi Ron, Thanks for the inspiration. Please let me know how you attach the Joist to the ledger board i.e 2' from the house to the beam close to your house window. Is the ledger board attached to the house? or is it free standing?

It’s freestanding. No ledger and no need for flashing. The rear band is about 3/4” from the house. Was able to squeeze 4 more feet of span using 2x8 with a 2’ cantilever in the rear and front.
