nice video. if there was one piece of information I would add, since this is a DIY, you might speak to the hardware you are using. To meet code, you are supposed to use very specific screws to attach joists. You can't just grab construction screws. They don't have the required sheer strength and could lead to catastrophic failure. Simpson makes screws that meet code. 1.5" for mounting the joist hanger to the header. 2.5" angled through joist into header. just an FYI for any DIY'ers like myself trying to build a deck.

Nice video. Curious why you would use deck screws on on the joist clips instead of structural screws or approved galvanized nails.
@DIYDeclassified
@DIYDeclassified 2 жыл бұрын
Good eye! I used structural screws on a majority of the deck but ran short as I was building the section directly above concrete. Yes, you should use structural, but in my case that area has a short span, and if the screws fail the board will only fall a couple inches. With 6 screws holding in the bracket Im confident they will hold just fine.

Hi, I've been running through a lot of DIY videos in anticipation of building my own deck. But I do have a question I am hoping you'd be able to answer for me. On decks utilizing a cantilever, why are the joist hangers not inverted at the header joist since it is the joists that are actually supporting the header and not the other way around?
@Danomite99
@Danomite99 Жыл бұрын
Hey there, I also noticed the cantilevered joists. Typically you should avoid it if possible. If it’s the only option, then I always try and stay less than 10% of the total joist span or less. As for reversing the hangars, there is still downward load on the majority of the deck, so having them reversed only solves one load requirement. I have seen where shorter hangars are used on both top and bottom (say 2x6” hangars for 2x10 joists) to carry upward loads also). Never tried this personally, I just avoid large cantilevers! 👍

There are a few factors that go into this. What kind of wood, how wide the boards are, etc. If you go to the website I describe at the beining of my first deck video, they have a chart that will tell you exactly how far you can canterlever your deck based on what materials you have.

@DIYDeclassified

I set the outside posts first, made sure they were level and square. Then I tied a string line between the two that would give the exact placement of the center posts. Because the post bases I used are adjustable, if I was slightly off, I could broken it back down and readjust before I finished the deck.

I think i get what you're asking. The offset of the deck from the footers/posts is 12 inches. You can look up span charts to see how much overhang you can withstand based on the lumber demensions you choos. I could have gotten away with an 18 inch overhang, but I liked how 12 inches looked, so I ran with it. If this is not what you meant, let me know and I will gladly answer your questions.

@DIYDeclassified

Not for how I am picture framing the deck. The composite decking requires a cross member every 12 inches which is why I had to do it this way. I wish I could have just added another joist.
@joetenorio4930
@joetenorio4930 Жыл бұрын
You could have added another joist on the inner joist of the picture frame. This additional joist would have supported the edge of the perpendicular composite deck boards without having to move a joist and cut blocking back. In my mind, you were caught up with the perfect layout for the joist support and missed the easiest, least complicated fix. It happens. Just remember, code and manufacturer suggestions are only MINIMUM requirement. No one says you can’t have joists less than 12” in this particular application.

well MR DIY first code violation using common deck screws on the hanger number 2 code violation you did not have any connector plates connecting the post to the beam even though you notched it you are required to use steel connector plates and where you have a joint on the beam you are supposed to lap the beam the beam sol act as a whole or a solid beam and not be in 2 pieces. its not called a header joist its called a rim joist and a proper way to do it is single ply 2x material with a Facia Board that would stager the joints and does not require hangers and should be face screwed or nailed ..

I could have, but here was my logic. The joists were being supported by the beam. The 6 screws going into each joist that was going into the header was plenty of strength to hold the header. This header on the deck was only going to hold the fascia board. So with all the screws and back blocking from the railing posts, that header was going nowhere. Also, if I did flip them up, I would have to deal with the lip the brackets would then put on the top. My decking boards wouldnt sit flush, and it may have caushed my railing posts to lean in towards the deck.

@@DIYDeclassified 09:37 Joist hangers would not have been needed at that header. Just nail or screw from the header into the joist. As you mentioned, the header is not really supporting anything. Great video.
