Living Big In A Tiny House

Living Big In A Tiny House

Күн бұрын

At 15 Square meters and completely off-grid, Brett Sutherland has constructed a true, tiny house treasure. Packed with unique, space saving design elements, Brett has created a fantastic space to both live and work.
Perhaps best of all, this was all achieved on a budget of NZ$21,000. The Tiny House was constructed on his parents property, and will soon be moved to a friends property in Bethells Beach in Auckland.
This modern tiny house is filled with treasures obtained over a lifetime of adventure, and may just be the ultimate bachelor pad.

After several years and looking at dozens upon dozens of tiny home designs, I keep coming back to this one. It's still my favorite, hands down, for several reasons. It's not very complicated, a rather simple, yet clever, open, and spacious design. At 57 yrs old, I WILL be building myself one exactly like this within the decade. Brett is 100% correct in stating the gabled roof designs are too cramped for a tiny home on a trailer. The desk and table hiding the wheel wells, plus the semi spiral stair case is genius. There's not single thing I do not like about this tiny home. Huge thanks to Brett and this channel for sharing this "Best Design". SO glad I found it a while back.

Okay seriously, can this man write a blog or something? He is so useful! He is like the uncle who has so much life experience and has travelled and knows the deals and ins and outs. He got a three sided shower for $5! and the wish list idea. Idk why I never thought of that. It's common to have a wish list for house gifts like blenders, but now I want actual house parts and building materials lol. Great resource this man.

Brett is definitely one of my favorite guys you've visited and interviewed. That "innocent look" on his face. So simple, kind. And his home is simple yet beautiful. Congrats. Thanks for the lovely, quality informational content and entertainment Bryce and Rasa 💕

One of the more descent designs I've seen on a small trailer. No ridiculous "porch" to waste usable living space and steps instead of a freaking ladder to get to the loft with space to walk next to the bed. Also the roof design. I see these designs, ie tumble weed houses, where you just can't avoid banging your head on the ceiling because of the screwy pitched roof that makes it seem more like your climbing into a coffin instead of bed and who wants to crawl to and climb down a ladder in the middle of the night to use the crapper. This tiny house design was much better thought out and very liveable. Outstanding job.

Tulessa Slone I am part Cherokee. My grandmothers father was full blooded (Tennessee), but I still wouldn't choose a porch over already limited living space. I like nature and being outdoors too, but you could easily have a porch on the ground beside the trailer or one that folds up against the back. Just a thought.

@@tulessaslone5592 Yes! A porch is the welcoming station! A good porch is a must. But consider this; when you park the tiny house somewhere (where you're going to stay for a bit), you can build a porch that's substantial, expanding your living space out beyond the tiny house ... and bridging the space between the world and your home.

I had to pay rent yesterday and it didn't feel good. And my closets are choked with stuff I don't need. @@feliciadavis7379 you set strict boundaries and expectations. If they don't meet them then just kick them out. It's your house, your rules. They might eventually get tired of the strict rules and will want "their own freedom" or give them a timeline to move out. Say they have a year or so to stay and then they have to move out. Hopefully that will give them an incentive to start saving for their own place. Kids have to learn it the hard way sometimes. Called tough love. Just because they are your kids doesn't mean that they get to take advantage of you. Stop coddling your kids! They will never learn to live on their own as long as you continue to provide everything for them. You could say if you get your own apartment, I'll help you find some furniture or get you a tv.

This is in my top 5 of favorite Tiny Houses I've viewed on youtube....and I have viewed a lot in 3 years!!! I love the roof design for four reasons. It allows for 1) A large area with headroom in the loft, 2) A cross breeze that won't blow on the back of your neck while sitting up in bed reading 3) Low wind resistance while towing the home 4) Rain water collection. I love so much more about the home!

So the dimensions of this house (park model RV) are, in approximates, deck- 8.2 feet wide and 3.3ft long, house width 8.2 feet, length 22.9 feet and the height 13.68 feet. While that's just a hair over the allowed US trailer height, it's easily adjustable. Wonder if this gentleman would like to sell his plans? There are a LOT of people who've watched this video who (including me) would pay - this is the best build I've seen. This could be built on a 24' trailer easily.

All in all that seems to allow independence. GREAT JOB!!!

Hi, the insulation is old refrigeration foam selvaged from a junk yard Rain goes straight into the tank and I use it for washing/cleaning. Drinking water I get from filling 10 litre containers after the roof has had a good flush then goes through a diverted into the container and can see its clear. Heating is nearly ready with the installation of a little pot belly stove.
@livingbig
@livingbig 10 жыл бұрын
***** Yup. In this system there is no first flush, so it's pretty difficult to avoid some of that getting into the tank (unless you manually connect the pipe after it's already been raining a while to clear the roof). We'll be showing you in a later video how we are dealing with rain-water collection in our Tiny House.

I watched this video for the first time 9 years ago. This is absolutely the best split/longitudinal roof design with permanent 1/4 spiral staircase vs any other tiny home/roof design, hands down. This is the only design that makes total sense, because it maximizes the air space, the upstairs headroom, and totally eliminates the need for a ladder or "portable rolling stairs". Can you imagine being a senior citizen and having to deal with going up & down a ladder or portable rolling stairs just to use the bathroom in the middle of the night? I can already envision many old folks falling and getting hurt really bad........or they resort to sleeping downstairs. That's what everyone is having to deal with pertaining to the common cramped-for-space gabled-roof design of most other tiny homes.........and it's nuts. Brett's design is the only way to go. I will be constructing one for myself within the next 5 years exactly like Brett's design seen in this video. Cheers.

This remains my favorite roofline for a THOW and small homes with or without loft space. I really like his ingenuity. I wonder if his solar array would power an induction hotplate that draws 15 amps? I have one that is used more than my gas range because of the speed with which it cooks and boils water. One solution for the curtain over his bathroom: Magnets! Neodymium magnets affixed to the beams and small metal clips (even staples would work) on the ends of the curtains. Ever since I discovered Neodymium magnets on eBay, I've found them useful for all kinds of solutions.

I haven't seen them all yet, but I've viewed many videos on tiny homes, and THIS ONE makes the most sense, hands down. The way it's built, a person could modify to their own liking. The ROOF structure is what beats the pants off all the other designs. It enabled him to have some REAL stairs that aren't hogging up space, and the loft is roomy as well. And fully equipped to be off-grid! On a scale of 1 to 10, I give this an easy full 10. Very impressed. Hell, I want one! Great guy, very smart & inspiring.

I am just a year short to the big 3-0! I really want and am looking forward to feel this kind of freedom. I love the flexitank and the shub! 🛀 Almost six years later since this vid was posted, I still think this is the most *breeziest* layout out there! I hope Mr. Brett will sell/share his plans. He is the uncle that I never had 😅

I love this tiny home. I'm from Portugal Europe and the way we built things is very different from the American caftsman style tiny home that it's what you see the most on youtube. This house I think it's much similar. I took a lot of inspiration from this video. Love the way the roof is built, the way it creates space on the bed headboard. and air circulation and that height on the stairs is just wonderful love it very cool. Thank you.

I first saw this video when it was posted several years ago. I absolutely loved the overall basic design and layout. It seemed very logical and airy inside for the small size. 4yrs later, after having viewed a lot of tiny house videos and seeing a lot of tiny houses in person, it's still one of my favorite tiny houses. It seems like an extremely economical solution, while adding a little modern architectural interest in the roofline. I totally agree with Brett about the cramped loft feeling with a typical gable roof tiny house. That's why I love his design so much. P.S. Brett seems like a very cool guy.

I think that this guy's boat-building background is an ideal foundation for someone who wants to D.I.Y. design and build their own tiny house given how boats, by their very nature, force you to economize your interior space and, resultingly, prioritize only that what is absolutely necessary to fill that space with and eliminate what isn't!

This was one of the 1st tiny house videos I ever saw and I have to say it is one of the best designed and spacious. I see lots of TH on youtube that are built and they are so dull and boring in design, devoid of imagination and creativity. This is a super house and I take my hat off to the gentleman that built it. Top notch.

This is by far, bar none, thee BEST tiny house I have ever seen. I wouldn't even call it a tiny house...plain and simple its a HOME! Great Job! More people need to follow this concept and your construction. You should go into business making this wonderful home for others to either buy the plans to do it themselves or buy a model like it already built. You just come buy it and haul it off to your own little piece of heaven! I would be first in line! Happy Life to you, Lisa Jo

Love, love, LOVE your design! Very well thought out. Brilliant roof design. You are right about a gable roof - it cuts out a TON of space. I would get totally claustrophobic squeezing in there to sleep. Love the open feel in yours. Plus I agree with the air movement. I am used to sleeping with a ceiling fan and to have just stagnant air all night would drive me crazy in a hurry. I could deal with the tight quarters but that would be a deal breaker. Thanks for sharing!

I like how all the NZ videos I've seen so far that the people take their shoes off. It makes so much sense. It's what I do at my home now (US) which I got from living in Japan. Most tiny homes in the US will suffer from floor contamination and filth because for some reason most Americans hate taking off their shoes indoors even if visiting someone else's home... ESPECIALLY in someone else's home. They think it's rude to be asked to remove their street shoes in someone's house. Even the dirt outside has microorganisms in it that are better left minimized being tracked inside.

yes..sometimes we actually don't know what had below the shoes while walking outdoor then went into somebody's house without take off shoes,are they sure that their shoes Clean enough?free from dog poops or some kind of dirt? buy a new pairs,so you can use it just inside your home!

I read a very controversial thread about this on an American BB. Apparently, Americans are deeply divided on this topic, as the thread wound up being deleted due to all of the insults people were hurling at one another. 8-/ Personally, I live in the States...and when I come home, I take my shoes off and put on my slippers. I like my feet to be warm, but I don't like the idea of tracking the outside in.

Love Brett's idea about living simply, minimalist. he is right about rent and mortgages which effectively enhance another individuals lifestyle while effectively crippling your own ability to live the life you wish. I won my own home, one of the lucky ones, yet have made the decision to get rid of a lot of clutter, rule of thumb, if I don't use it frequently, it is gone. Good luck to him in his journey.

Bought outright (less than the price of a 2nd hand family car) so no rent or mortgage payments. I have NEVER felt so free! Living the dream man. It's so liberating!
