Yes, the butterfly joints are ugly. They would be better on the underside of the table top, in my opinion.

Obviously, that was deliberate on the craftsman part. It could be easily flipped to make those joints invisible, but it was deliberately made shown on the up side. Appreciation, or what?

Those lower slabs should be level as you could set something on them ,This thing would make a great patio plant stand or something like that the craftsmanship on this piece is GREAT

Beautiful piece of artwork. Loved the idea of table and seats altogether. As for me, I would prefer the table top turned upside down to show the wood grain beauty in full and HIDE the ¥ inserted wood holding the four circled wood together.

Good idea, I think I would have put the bowtie joints on the bottom and poured resin into the gaps. But all depends on your tools available of course.

A highly imaginative and original use of a stump that in many countries would have been thrown away as waste wood.

I would have enjoyed sanding that stump over the winter until it was completely smooth, then apply a little oil to it. Then mount it over the fire place with a dooms day clock in the center.

I was wondering at first what they were going to make out of this until they started cutting slabs and the bowtie joints. For the tools that they have this really is a nice piece, but I do question why the bowtie joints were left exposed as opposed to putting them on the underside of the table top. Just seems like an odd choice to me.
