With the Grateful Dead VARIETY is the name of the game. Having seen them in concert about 50 times, I can say they were always different, and always trying something new. The were not afraid of change. In fact, they reveled in it. Country, Jazz, Folk, Improv, Rock, Modal, Fusion, Reggae, Blues, Punk, whathaveyou. Jerry, Bobby, Phil, Bill, Mickey, Pigpen, Tom, Keith, Brent, Vince, Bruce and Donna Jean, all made contributions to their sound and their legacy. One of the best bands to ever set foot on a stage. Period.

The Grateful Dead are such an amazing band, so relaxed and laid back yet also incredibly deep and insightful... "If you ever get confused listen to the music play"

I believe it was music producer, Bill Graham who said about The Grateful Dead “They aren’t the best at what they do, they are the only ones that do what they do.”

I know that quote very well. I just didn't know it was Bill Graham who said it.

Yah you got it. Light one up. And also you are correct …the dead don’t fall into a musical category. To me they are one of the best country bands, they also are legitimately ones of the original psychedelic bands, but stated with pig pen as a blues band, and always have elements of jazz and bluegrass. and of course the groups who started the whole jam band gendre.

Listened to a radio show called "Inside the Music", the Dead were the focus, I learned so much about the band it actually helped break down some of the misunderstood things I had about them, the fact that they are all very skilled and adept musicians, they weren't just up there noodling around while tripping, not just some hippies with nothing better to do than start a band cuz they were all getting high together. Explained what the band name The Grateful Dead actually meant, beautiful!

When you have the chance check out the live version of this song, on KZbin, that was posted by The Grateful Dead. The Dead were the most open band when it came to freely sharing their music. While they have a large catalogue of studio and stage performances, they also made it possible for fans to get audience recordings of concerts (some straight from the soundboards).

This is a song written about people The Grateful Dead would run into, people with some psychedelic vision or drug fueled revelation they felt compelled to share with the band. Bob Weir, who sings lead on this one said they would run into people like that all the time.

Keep going with the catalogue. I’ve been a Deadhead since ‘72, and you’ll find many gems out there, especially from the Live LP’s. Light one up & enjoy.✌️❤️🎶

This is the song that turned me into a Deadhead in 1983. It was actually my boyfriend's bootleg of Estimated/Eyes from Barton Hall Cornell University 1977 that actually turned the Light On.

Bingo! You nailed it on The Dead’s “variety” of material! From the early raw Pig Dead R/B blues like “Smokestack Lightnin’”, “Good Lovin’” and “Easy Wind” to the straight fire rockers like “One More Saturday Night”, “Bertha”, and “Truckin’” to the beautiful, melodic Jerry Dead like “China Doll”, “Bird Song”, “Stella Blue”, and “Row Jimmy” to the Bobby Cowboy Dead like “El Paso”, “Mexicali Blues” and “Me and My Uncle” to Space Dead like “Dark Star”, “The Other One”, “Eyes of The World (live jam versions), to Bluegrassy Dead like “Friend of the Devil”, “Cumberland Blues”, and “Uncle John’s Band” to the epic “Terrapin Station” to the jam anthem they would string together like “China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider” and “Scarlet Begonias >Fire on The Mountain “ and on and on!! Just so damn much greatness that we were so lucky to receive! I’ve been at it since late 68 and still find them just as fresh and relevant as ever! You have MUCH to look forward to!!

Really well produced album, tough to get that from the Dead, they are a live band at heart, the studio albums were kind of blueprints, I don't think they ever played the same setlist twice and each song was never played the same live.
@DeadZeppelin8227 ай бұрын
Exactly. I feel the albums were intended to give you the gist of their songs so that when you see them live the improvisation has more of an impact
@billbeliakoff55897 ай бұрын
A lot of their songs were performed live before getting recorded for studio albums. Jerry once said "going into the studio is like building a ship in a bottle, everything has to be perfect, playing live, for us is like being on the ocean in a row boat. It's daring, you never know where you'll end up"
