I grew up with this great Canadian band. They had so many hits such as "American Woman", "These Eyes", "No Time", "Laughing", "Undun", "Hand Me Down World", "Share The Land", "Bus Rider", "Star Baby", "Albert Flasher" etc. Burton Cummings has a great voice. One of the best out there. Randy Bachman later left to form Bachman Turner Overdrive & had many hits. And Burton Cummings had a great solo career with lots of great songs.

You really should check out the studio version, a live version just can't duplicate everything about it, the placement of the instruments in the mix, the studio silent moment between transitions, Burton's voice, the round of verses at the end, this song is probably in my top 20 recordings of all time.

While this is a good live version, I generally agree with you. I always recommend people listen to the studio version first so as to hear how a song was meant to be heard. Later they can listen to a live version. I've seen live versions recommended to people that were not worth hearing. The sound was so bad you could understand what was being sung. With rare exceptions, it's always the recorded version that becomes a hit, not the live version.

The guitarist for The Guess Who was Randy Bachman. He was responsible for writing a number of their hits. He left the group in 1970 due to health problems and wanting spend more time with his family. He got together with his younger brother Robbie Bachman and had Fred Turner join them and Bachman-Turner Overdrive was born in 1973.

No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature is actually a collaboration between band members Burton Cummings, the lead singer and guitarist Randy Bachman, also of Bachman Turner Overdrive. Burton had written the "No Sugar Tonight" part and Bachman composed "New Mother Nature", and the two decided to merge their songs into the great one you've just reviewed. Awesome pick!

The Guess Who were a staple of am radio when I was a kid in the 60s. All of their songs are very memorable for me. They take back to a more simpler time. A great time to be a kid. The guitar player is Randy Bachman before Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Birton Cummings is the singer and piano player. He has had a fairly prolific career after this band. They have reunited several times over the years. These guys are not in the current version of the band. Great songs and great memories.

I'm so glad you did this, The Guess Who is one of my favorite bands and I never get tired of them. You could pick up almost any song off of their greatest hits album and everyone is astonishing. And of course they have a lot more than what's on the greatest hits. All of those songs were in constant rotation on the radio for years. And I love how as they get into the second song, in the chorus, the so-called scatting, is basically from the first song and then at the end they combined it even more with the backing vocals echoing lines from the first song in a round. The round is even more complex and fleshed-out on the studio recording, it's worth a listen. And we should definitely note how great these guys are, not only as musicians but as backing vocalists as well. Burton Cummings (incredible singer) is the lead singer most associated with the majority of their career, although they did have a different one earlier and that stuff is good as well. But not only could the other guys sing incredible backing vocals, the arrangements of those backing vocals are really wonderful. They don't just sing along with every phrase,, they emphasize certain words and parts of the phrases and then of course they do that round at the end.

I had the pleasure around 1990 to enjoy a concert with Bachman Turner Overdrive and The Guess Who together. My wife and I were in our late twenties at the time. The concert was surreal because not only was the music great but instead of the usual audience filled with teenagers in ripped jeans and T-shirts, this audience was filled with people our age and older dressed in suits and evening gowns. I loved your reaction to "These Eyes" (approx. 6 months ago) so I think that you'd likely enjoy these Guess Who tunes: "American Woman" (You may have heard a cover of this one, there have been several a great one by Lenny Kravitz) "Laughing" "Hand Me Down World" "No Time" "Undun" (Randy Bachmann's guitar work on this song is spectacular. His Jazz roots are showing.) and for something a little lighter, "Clap For The Wolfman" (feat. Wolfman Jack, a famous radio DJ from the '50s - '70s} and "Running Back To Saskatoon"

The whole greatest hits album is a must for every roadtrip!!!! I’m from Winnipeg where most of these guys are from and where the band formed. I was walking thru the WPG airport very late one night waiting for my parents super delayed flight when a man came up from behind me gave me a playful shove and a hey how ya doin and kept going. There was no one else around everything was closed so he stunned me but he was obviously harmless . It was unfortunate that he was already out of earshot before I realized it was Burton Cummings the lead singer. I was so upset that I couldn’t tell him how much I admired and appreciated him and his work. Him and Randy Bachman who you did listen to already are definitely some of Canada’s underrated greats. @@G-grandma_Army Abso-freakin-lutely! Especially with a lot of older songs, some of the live recordings are just plain crap. Plus, when people like a song, typically they like the studio recording of the song, not some live thing, UNLESS it happens to be extraordinary, like Chicago 25 or 6 to 4 live at Tanglewood 1970. But those are the exceptions not the rule.

As a proud Canadian, I must of seen then in concert 4-5 times and they were great ! Burton Cummings, lead vocal/ pianist, solo for many years now, gives a fantastic performance. Last time I saw him, he literally did not take a break and rocked out for 2.5 hours. His bandmates took breaks but he did.not.stop for a minute. He's written sooooooo many beautiful songs. Stand Tall, Break it to them Gently, I'm Scared and countless others but " la pièce de résistance " is Share the Land. The lyrics are AMAZING with a great message! 👏👍

@@janicetrimmell6897 - Awww, Shanandora! As usual, you are way too sweet! Especially, when your musical knowledge runs rings around mind. As far as what we prefer, I think we were separated at birth! LOL The two songs you mentioned are wonderful and amoung my favorites, but I also played the heck out of "Your Back Yard" and his cover of Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Nothing Rhymed". kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJnSqWd_ibqMl6s kzbin.info/www/bejne/hp-ZnJp6nb-HqZo

@@DianaJG8 Oh Good Grief I love these two. The lyrics all came back to me. Another stellar album from the year 1976!!! If we weren't separated at birth, we should have at least known each other in high school. I went through this thing around Thanksgiving where I had to listen to "Stand Tall" every night. I've also done that at various times with "Too Much Heaven" to fill my head with uplifting thoughts. The song I wake up to is "Nights on Broadway." I hope you are already asleep this night. I am headed there.

I loved this song back in the day and I love it now. Burton Cummings is an upbeat, really cool guy and it comes out in his voice. That was Randy Bachman of Bachman Turner Overdrive. Great guitar player.

The Guess Who was another reason I wanted to pick up a guitar. I got my first for Christmas when I was 7 years old. Went to a school of music a year later. I wanted to learn Gordon Lightfoot and the Guess Who first. My very cool teacher said; "okay sure". I learned their music freehand first, and then I learned how to read the music and theory after. I am a grandmother now, but I am 8-9 years old when I listen to these greats. Lori.C.

I've been waiting for this one for ages (and City of New Orleans by Arlo Guthrie) You should now listen to the studio version of this song. Its more refined (as you would expect) but this live version was very good.

According to Burton Cummings, whose show I attended a few year back, he mentioned that this mash up came about because he and Randy Bachman were writing this song and had different ideas about how it should go so they mashed up their individual versions. Probably one of the first mash ups to be done.

The Righteous Brothers - Rock & Roll Heaven 1974. If there's a rock n' roll heaven. Well you know they've got a hell of a band, band, band Jimmy gave us rainbows, And Janis took a piece of our hearts, And Otis brought us all to the dock of a bay.... The Righteous Brothers - Rock & Roll Heaven 1974 A must listen.

With the exception of "Three Dog Night" no one deserves and has been so disrespected by the RRHOF more than "The Guess Who" with multiple memorable and historical hits like These Eyes, Undun, No Time, Laughing, American Woman etc...etc... These guys need to be recognized 🎸☮️💕

F... the RRHOF! It's a bullshit organization that's all politics & money. Watch Steve Miller go after them at the press interviews right after he was inducted. Yan Wenner is a piece of crap. So many incredible rock & roll deserving artists have been snubbed by them yet freakin' rap people are getting inducted. RRHOF is a joke!
