Very glad to see more people checking out Symphony X. They're some of the most skilled musicians on the scene, especially Russell Allen, the vocalist, and Michael Romeo, the guitarist. If you are looking for a real treat, check out their songs The Odyssey and The Divine Wings of Tragedy. They're over 20 minutes, but worth every second. This band is insanely talented both in technical ability and songwriting ability.

Awesome that you're getting to Symphony X - one of my all-time favorite bands! Lots of great music from these guys. They're going on tour this year and I can't wait to see them again. You should definitely check them out live if you get a chance - they put on a great show. Eventually you'll need to check out their musical version of "The Odyssey", which is an absolute triumph. There's some other great suggestions already in the comments as well.

Set the world on fire was the song that introduce me to this band back when i was 13 y.o. Man, Michael Romeo sure knows how to play guitar. I just love his fluffy fingers dancing around the fretboard. Now im 26, still amaze whenever i heard that song.

I don't believe it man! You did it. And I didn't knew because the video was not allowed outside of US (hehe, I used a chrome extension and managed to watch it of course). I'm super glad you liked them as much as you did man. This album (Paradise Lost) is really heavy. Their older works have a more dark and neoclassical turn to them, which i'm sure you will appreciate. Thanks a lot for doing this reaction after all, and I hope you will get into more Symphony X in the future. PS: Just to clarify, they are labeled as progressive metal.

@@TheAdventuresofTNT Tough question. Really tough. One of the staple albums of Symphony X is "Divine Wings of Tragedy". The production is great, and it has that most defining Symphony X sound. No wonder it houses two of their biggest classics "Sea of Lies" and "Of Sins and Shadows". I think both of them would give you a taste of their signature sound. There's also their concept album called "V:The New Mythology Suite" which is regarded as their musical peak, and if you want to check something from there I definitely suggest "Absence of Light" and "Fool's Paradise". You can't imagine how happy I am that you liked them. Also, something last. Their singer is regarded as one of the best in the genre, and their guitarist is one of the top ones in the metal area, sitting next to the big ones (not as famous though).

This album is based on the book Paradise Lost from Milton. The last few albums they have done have been themed albums. Iconoclast dealt with machines taking over man (ala Terminator) and the last album Underworld was influenced by Dante's Inferno. Their earlier stuff was more prog metal with a lot more keyboards and time signature changes. With the album The Odyssey they started getting much heavier. Paradise Lost is my favorite album from them. A more prog metal song on the album is Revelations.

its based on John Milton's Paradise Lost, so that is the reason why the album tell the story on Lucifer perspective.

Paradise Lost is probably the best album. You should check out Walls Of Babylon or Seven off this album. Seven is just an insane song from a technical standpoint. The bassline in the middle of Seven will blow anyone's minds.

This whole album is brilliant, a modern classic. For something different yet again, you should do the ballad and title track from the album, Paradise Lost.

Please note- the music video version of Set the World on Fire you just watched cuts out a full minute of the solo, that's why the transition there seems so weird and abrupt. The album version is 6 min long. Also, even though their stuff from the 90's is good and some people prefer their more neo-classical proggy sound, I'm pretty sure you'll like their newer stuff, like this album, better- the newer stuff is heavier, more riffs, Russel's voice has improved over the years, it's grittier and with more range. These two are far from the best songs even on this album, they just happen to be the "radio singles" the label chose for them. Walls of Babylon is probably the best on the album and one of their best, period. Try "Children of a Faceless God" for groove metal awesomeness, "Charon" is sublime. If you want one of their best ballads, "When All is Lost". Eventually, do get to "The Odyssey", though- it's 24 minutes and basically five songs interconnected with instrumental symphonic sections, telling the highlights of the tale of Odysseus.

7:41 You nailed it - this album's theme is fully inspired by biblical lore. Although they only have one conceptual album (where the songs tell a story), most of their albums have a cohesive theme. I strongly recommend Walls of Babylon from this same album (Paradise Lost).

PLEASE do something from their album V: The New Mythology Suite or earlier. Don't get me wrong, this song is pretty good but their earlier stuff has far better melodic content and the heavy riffs are a bit better written imo. So basically, 2000 and earlier is where it's at for them and they had 4 absolute banger albums during that era. Of Sins and Shadows is probably their best ass kicker or if you wanna see them at their melodic peak The Accolade is as good as it gets (Part 1, not Part 2, and it's simply titled "The Accolade", no "Part 1" involved.)

​@@Jim.G Symphony X's strength is their melodic, neoclassical side. They do heavy okay but it is far from one of their strengths and when they do employ heaviness, it works way better when done tastefully and in a way that suits the song. "Riffier" means nothing in the way you used it either since the riffs have gotten weaker since Paradise Lost and their old songs seem to have had even more riffs. Maybe you were using it as a synonym for redundant. Russell's voice was a lot more varied in the early material too. From PL on, he damn near abandoned his clean voice unless he was singing a ballad. It just sounds forced and loses its dynamic punch. If you're trying to sound heavy all the time then the gritty voice just sounds like the default, not a sudden increase in intensity when well balanced with cleans. Also, how does his voice have more range when the newer stuff is focused on gritty lows and barely ever uses his high end?

@@blakfloyd I dunno man. I prefer their newer stuff, I liked them during the 90's, but I love them now. I like Russel's grit, more of it is a good thing to my ears. I like their current sound. I know other people that are prog metal fans who feel the same (and I know lots of people hold your position, too.) People who are straight metal fans and not so into prog, I've found, tend to like the newer stuff more/a lot, and possibly don't like the 90s material at all. This is why TnT might fall in that camp. But sure, he should check out the neoclassical and other forms of prog metal to broaden horizons, as well. But which era of SX is better is not a settled matter at all. It's a matter of taste and preference, pure and simple.

Symphony x is definitely one of my top bands, they have tons of great songs. I think of it like progressive power metal personally, with the earlier stuff being more progressive and later stuff more power metalley (but still had prog elements).

If you think this is good, "The Odyssey" will blow you mind 100 times over. It's from the early 2000's and has MUCH more melody and demonstrates the vocalists full range (less growling and screaming) :) And Michael Romeo on guitar is a guitar god for most guitarists... just sayin'
