Hi there, awesome project. Considering you will be sleeping East to West orientation, just wondering why you decided to make your slats go in long wise direction, rather that width wise like most slat beds?
@saltyvanventures3 ай бұрын
Good question! And something which never really crossed my mind. I suppose conventionally the slats should face the other way, although it hasn’t been an issue.

What model of Ford Transit is that? How did you squeezed 191 cm out of it? I'm working on a Ford Transit 148 high roof extended lenght and all I got is 172 cm wide on the cargo area. Can you tell me the exact model please? EDIT: Nevermind, I found the video where you explain it! hahaha BRILLIANT idea!!

Hi, your van build is great. My husband is 6’2, and to get as much length across ways for the bed we have just cut off both ribs on either side, ready to frame and recess. I’m really hoping we haven’t weakened the structure of the van, and that the framing will be sturdy enough to put the strength back. Did we do right by taking the ribs out?? I’ve seen other van builders do it this way, but cannot for the life of me find any of the videos. I’m panicking now, especially as you only cut off one rib either side...
@saltyvanventures Жыл бұрын
If the ribs are the ones I'm thinking off (the ones literally held on with glue) then you should be fine. These are not structural and really are only there to stop the sheet metal from flapping about. They are removed if you install rear windows anyway so don't stress.

Hey mate love your work 2x4 is that a 40x90 mm in Australia and did you use dressed timber for your bed frame ?
@saltyvanventures3 жыл бұрын
I think it roughly translates to 95X45. But you can get a lot of similar sizes. These are just rough sawn construction timber, not dressed.

I've heard that the foam mattresses can be hot, and of course Australia gets hot - does the memory foam mattress cope well with allowing air to circulate like an inner-spring mattress?
@saltyvanventures3 жыл бұрын
I've never heard of that. As long as the mattress is ventilated i don't think you will have a problem. That being having a slatted bed base rather than a solid piece. I can't see why a foam mattress would be any hotter than a spring mattress though, they aren't entirely hollow. Having said that we haven't slept on it on a really hot night yet. I can see and air mattress being cooler but who wants one of those.

Sorry if this is a dumb question but the Ford Transit is listed as 70.2 inches wide which is about 5 foot 11 inches. How did you make this fit a 6'3 person, I could not see any cutouts in the video?
@saltyvanventures3 жыл бұрын
What’s advertised and what’s measured from what I found are 2 different things. I’m presuming those measurements are with the standard plywood walls attached. Also the van width varies as it’s a rounded shape. I design the bed to be right in the widest possible spot. I also gained a few inches by cutting out the thicker ribs on the walls. Check the video in the description where I built the frame for the bed.

The thumbnail shows the bed being 6'3" and I'm curious how tall you are to see how much extra room you have to move around. Also, the foot and inch markings are backwards on your thumbnail. Aside from that, this build looks awesome. Great job!

Good question! I'm 6"3 so I fit, just. I just i don't sleep super strait so I have a bit of space to move around. Even more if i sleep on a slight angle.

its main support is the vertical timbers that hold all the weight of the horizontal one. The vertical timbers are screwed into the plywood wall and anything else i could get a screw into

Another great video. We're in the process of doing the bed with the recessed walls. Was there a reason you made the recess the same height as the base? We're thinking about raising it to be the same height as the mattress, but not sure if that's the right thing to do or not.
@saltyvanventures3 жыл бұрын
If you do it your way wont you have a hard wood at either end of the bed with with mattress in the middle? That would make sleeping uncomfortable.

the whole internal width of a ford transit van is 68". and you have to do *some* insulation/cover. so we are at 67". that is 5ft 7 inch. how can a 6'3 person sleep in it? I think, since the title of this video is 'AMAZING Fixed BED for TALL People' , you should have at least measured and tell us what's the size of the damn bed. no?
