The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is a family of single-seat, single-engined, all-weather stealth multirole fighters. It has three main models: the F-35A conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) variant, the F-35B short take-off and vertical-landing (STOVL) variant, and the F-35C carrier-based catapult-assisted take-off but arrested recovery (CATOBAR) variant. The F-35 descends from the Lockheed Martin X-35, the winning design of the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program. It is built by Lockheed and many subcontractors, including Northrop Grumman, Pratt & Whitney, and BAE Systems.
The United States principally funds F-35 development, with additional funding from other NATO members and close U.S. allies, including the United Kingdom, Italy, Australia, Canada, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Turkey. These funders generally receive subcontracts to manufacture components for the aircraft; for example, Turkey is the sole supplier of several F-35 parts. Several other countries have ordered, or are considering ordering, the aircraft.

Dude, America's needed a proper close-air support craft since the beginning of the Iraq war, but planes that can fly low & slow enough to fulfill this role keep getting passed over for big, fancy jets that are only good for killing pilots and flexing at Russians. For anyone calling this an overpriced piece of shit, the 1.5 trillion dollar price tag is the lifetime cost of the program. That means r&d, upgrades maintenance, and the procurement of 2000 of these jets. Everyone saying it'd be cheaper to continue making and upgrading older f-16s, 15s, and 18s don't know what they're talking about. As planes get older the cost of maintaining those old aircraft would cost even more money than the overall cost of the f-35 program so please before you get mad, do your research.

Lmao..I used to be a crew chief on 16s and launched and recovered them daily.. he probably had his seat adjusted too high. So on 16s at least you'd see the pilot put a fist above his helmet to the canopy to adjust his seat to the right position to see the HUD. On 35s there is no hud all I can think of is he's possibly not adjusted right.

On the spec sheet, this jet is just "meh". But talk to pilots of this plane, and they are head over heels in love with it. Why? Two words: "situational awareness". According to a US Marine F-35 pilot, if you asked any fighter pilot in the world what the most important quality in a fighter jet is, the answer isn't speed, turning radius, thrust, climb rate, etc. It's how much information can I get about what's around me, and how do I best utilize it? It gets a lot of shit for losing to an F-16 in a mock dogfight several years ago, but there have been several advancements to this jet, since. In addition, not all of its functions were being fully utilized (and still aren't). It's not the fastest fighter jet, or the most maneuverable, though from what I've read from pilots who fly it, say that it's more maneuverable than the F-15, which is a phenomenal dogfighter. Where this beats everyone, though -- including the F-22 Raptor -- is its warfare suites. It is, by far, the most technologically advanced fighter jet in the world. The pilot has virtually a 360 degree view all around him/her, up and down, forward-to-back, side-to-side. In addition, it has built in radar-jamming technology, infrared dampening, and other tech that essentially makes it almost impossible for the opposing enemy, on the ground or in the air, to see it, all while never knowing their communications and radar are being jammed in the process. The pilot of the F-35 will see you and torch you before you even knew what was happening. Capable of being able to determine friendlies and bogies from over 100 miles away, the F-35 can reportedly lock on and engage targets even when it's not in visual sight of the target! Another feature that it has, and a reason why the US is shopping it to our allies, is that the F-35 will "talk" to other F-35s. Meaning, for NATO purposes, this makes it much easier to coordinate and strategize with allies on the ground, and in the air, simplifying and streamlining the process, making the process almost seamless. And what's more, the project cost of this plane continues to drop. Over the course of its service life, the F-35 will be cheaper to maintain than the F/A-18, and its production cost will be well below the $80 million goal set by the military for one aircraft by lot 12 - a full lot sooner than expected ("lot" is a batch # of fighters produced). The program, once hailed as a monumental disaster, may end up looking like one of the greatest success stories in US military history. In short, it's not going to out maneuver the Su-35 or the F-22 in a dogfight, and it's not going to outrun a MiG-31, but it won't need to, because it's going to be able to see them and eliminate these targets before the pilot in those planes can pass gas and wonder what just happened. That said, its pilots from the US Navy, US Air Force, and the RAF swear by it, and claim that it can not only do everything as good as the best 4th generation fighters, but can do it better, and do it smarter.
