I didn't know that was how the SDB racks worked. I thought they just gravity dropped like everything else. Wasn't aware that they actually eject the munitions then slowly retract to reduce drag. That is kind of cool. For those wondering this is part of the Nellis Test and Training Range(NTTR) and this is just north of Creech AFB outside of Las Vegas.
@flippinkamikaze87386 ай бұрын
Spoilers: JDAMs and the laser-guided munitions are also "pushed" off. You can't really see them, but the bomb racks have a metal slug that push the bomb away from the rack, and are actuated by a shotgun blank!

We've got several stationed at the military base near us (Gowen Field). They're constantly cruising to and from that base over our house, so it's always landing or just after takeoff, definitely not booking though. They always travel in pairs, often multiple pairs. The A-10 absolutely has a place in a near peer conflict because after the first week of slinging all the silver bullets available, it becomes a conventional war of attrition. When all the Air Defenses have been vaporized, you need a weapons truck that’s is easy to fix and can fly from dirt roads. Moreover, this platform can carry new advanced longer range weapons in development now.

This was not designed to survive a war of attrition even in its heyday. The _daily_ losses were projected in the HUNDREDS in a conventional Seven Days to the Rhine Scenario against the Warsaw Pact. In actual service it was the most shot down Coalition aircraft of the Gulf war.. many by shoulder-launched MANPADS and light anti-aircraft. Many that “survived” were write-offs. In the face of such heavy losses they suspended A-10 operations until complete air supremacy was achieved. The F-16 flew more strike missions. The F-111 destroyed more tanks.
@411bvRGiskard6 ай бұрын
@@wapniak666 The F16 needs pristine airbases and runways. That’s what it had in Iraq and Afghanistan. It won’t have that in a near peer conflict where airbases will be targeted by long range missiles constantly. And what I’m talking about is not the traditional CAS mission. I’m talking about leveraging and employing this weapons system in new ways with new weapons like longer range decoys or cruise missiles etc. You don’t know as much as you think you do Ivan.
@411bvRGiskard6 ай бұрын
@@065Tim that’s why most of the remaining ones had they’re wings replaced genius. To extend their service life. And it’s not about looks. It’s about logistics. The plane is rugged and doesn’t need perfect runways. It’s cheaper to operate and maintain while able to carry a ton of weapons. It won’t be fighting all by itself but should be used in combined air ops once all the enemy air defenses are toast.

Give me a break... The F-35 nor the F-16 can replace the A-10 after watching this. No one has the payload, the hitting power, the loiter time and the mix of ordinance than the A-10; plus, those 30mm spent uranium slugs it spits out are compelling. Sure... it's not going out first wave. But as a mop up crew with the troops as a support (God knows the troops love and trust this machine {There's something to be said for troop morale}), we still need it in those eventualities and in lesser conflicts. Once we establish air dominance then the A-10s can come in and do what the others can't do. Period End. They keep trying to get rid of this jet, here is the proof it needs to stay.
