Great question! Those letters are the chord names that the accompaniment is playing, it's not the name of the note the banjo is playing.

Amazing Grace was merely a poem written by John Newton .. It was inspired by his personal life experience and with no spiritual conviction . His mother died when he was 6 or 10 or somewhere there about. His father , a weathered rough old cow and was a seaman so John began his life with his father at sea. After serving in the British Royal Navy and give up his slave trading career he begin his spiritual conversion and studied Christian theology .I read somewhere many years ago and am not really sure but the poem only became a song when the congregation would chant or merely say only two Words of thePoem ...Amazing Grace ,Amazing Grace is all that was spoken at first . First published in 1789
