With the eyes of the international community wide open, Israel has imposed upon Palestine an apartheid reality in a post-apartheid world. The latest UN report is the latest in a series of reports by international and Israeli human rights groups accusing Israel of the crime of apartheid - something Palestinian experts and human rights groups have been doing for decades. Unlike the latest reports from Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and B’Tselem, the UN report pays particular attention to the role that fragmentation has played in establishing and maintaining Israel’s apartheid regime, and acknowledges the settler-colonial nature of Israel’s regime. The UN recommended that Israel completely and unconditionally ends the occupation, all discriminatory and apartheid laws, practices and policies which privilege Jewish Israelis, and fully respect the national rights and human rights of the Palestinians. Israel must enable Palestinians to exercise their freedom of movement, assembly, expression and association, and it must remove all arbitrary and inequitable restrictions on family life, property, employment, access and enjoyment of resources, education and daily life. The international community must enforce accountability measures to bring the Israeli occupation and its practice of apartheid in the Palestinian territory to a complete end.

The apartheid in Israel is plan to see: separate roads for Jews and non-Jews, different rights for Jews and non-Jews living in the West Bank and Gaza. You have different rules and freedom of travel for Jews and non-Jews. Just be thankful you're not non-Jew ethnically cleansed from your home in 1948 and exiled forever. Over 750,000 non-Jews were ethnically cleansed from their homes and villages in 1948. Over 500 villages were blown up, set on fire, or bulldozed. Do you really think the non-Jews in refugee camps in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Egypt just sprang out of nowhere? Pay attention!

This is how I describe it for my children: Since the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, successive governments have created and maintained a system of laws, policies, and practices designed to oppress and dominate Palestinians. This system plays out in different ways across the different areas where Israel exercises control over Palestinians’ rights, but the intent is always the same: to privilege Jewish Israelis at the expense of Palestinians.
