Amazing Leslie 122H - Unbelievable !

Nick, great overview of the Leslie 122H! This is going to be my next acquisition. When, not if... I bought a 3300 about a year and a half ago, and it is great, but it's built for gigging and that ship has sailed at my advanced age. My 3300 is in show room condition, so I don't expect any problems selling that to help finance the 122H. I started to watch your video on the 122 vs. the 122H and I was very impressed with the new 122H! Gotta watch it now!

Fabulous looking Leslie. I had a nearly new 122 back in medieval times, I think it cost me £275. I’m fascinated to hear it compared to an original 122 and the 3300. I’d really like to hear a 2103 as well! There’s also the VFM angle for all but the most well-heeled organists, you could get a C3 and 2 old 122s for the price. Cheers Nick.

PLASIC BAG QUESTION ?? Knebworth witout a doubt ... In the absence of pink !! Had tickets, but was summoned by the Royal Navy to go to sea on my submarine at short notice to subdue the 'red menace'.... Didn't even have enough time to sell the un used tickets... Happy days !! ... And yes.. I would do it all again.. but looking around today at what goes on... Am I deluded??

Whether for B3, C3 or other, or a guitar running through it, the Leslie rotating speaker system has long been a guaranteed smile for me. But I often ended up grinding my teeth in angst at how people most always place microphones (stereo) for recording or PA sound reinforcement wrong. Whenever I see them place the mics 180˚ opposite from each other, it's all I can do to not scream at them; "Why don't you want the audience to hear the full beauty of what that Leslie is doing!!??" Yes, there's a mic for left and one for right. Good. And each mic IS getting the real Doppler effect as the rotating horn moves closer to the mics - and then away from them. This is great. BUT - there is so much more going on that is NOT getting picked up by the mics. Here's the problem: Due to the mics being place exactly opposite from each other, the are both getting a horn (there are two) to come close, pass by, and rotate away at exactly the same time. So both mics are getting the Doppler, and the volume swell, but they are the same effect happening at the same time. That's it. So what's missing? The part of the stereo (two) movement that we hear when standing in front of the Leslie cabinet. Our ears are NOT hearing both horns at the same time. We are hearing each horn approach and pass by our right ear first, move across our field of hearing and on to the left ear. We hear ONE horn pass by with the sound MOVING from right to left - not just swelling and rising/falling in pitch. This does not, can not happen with the mics pointing in at the sides of the cabinet. Here's the solution: (so easy) Place the mics at the FRONT of the cabinet at the extreme ends of the opening. Point them directly at the center of the rotating horn so they are pointing directly into the front opening 90˚ apart from each other. Now the sound from each horn will swell and 'doppler' at one mic - AND THEN to the other - as our ears experience it. Now the audience can enjoy the full rotating effect of the speaker as it was designed to be heard. 🙂 I've taught this little adjustment in mic placement to dozens of AE's over many years in many places. Some were excited to realize how easy it was to get so much more of the Leslie effect. But some were more arrogant and insulted that someone else would dare try to teach them something; so even though my demonstration showed true, they would insist on doing it their way giving me a bad look. *my guess is that, at the very next show (where I wasn't) they started using my suggestion and telling others about "their" great Leslie trick. No matter. Just so long as the audience got more of what they came to see/hear. 🙂

Any Leslie I have seen has one active horn and the other is inactive and there only as a counter balance.

@@warrenshalm550 I was going to say same, the double horn is plugged on one side. I have even seen demo videos with the camera positioned close to the horns, looking right into them and I could not only see when the blocked horn swung by but I could also hear the difference when the open horn swung by slowly.

@@warrenshalm550 Interesting. All of those that I've recorded and mic-ed live (going from the 80's into the late 90's) had two opposing horns for the mid/highs. Yet, me personally, I've never seen one with a single horn and a counter-weight for balance. 😀 It always fascinated me how they decided the lows would have just the one scoop, and the mid/highs two, and that they counter-rotated opposite each other. At one point, I tore apart the amp on one to figure out how to best input the guitar signal instead of the organ. I knew then that it had been done plenty already. But nobody was around to show me, so I had to figure it out on my own. And there was no internet then to DL a schematic. So that made it all the more interesting. 🙂

@@warrenshalm550 Interesting. Yet every Leslie cabinet I've ever recorded with or mic-ed at shows (back in the 80's through 90's) all had dual opposing horns for mid/highs. I've been out of the biz for a very long time. So maybe later designs changed (to save costs???) I dunno. I have a 145 -what was the Leslie they called "the Tall BOY " years ago???

Leslies came in basically three heights. The shortest was the 145. Other models of the same height: 44W, 45, and 142. standard height (as seen in the video) is almost a foot taller, and includes 147, 122, 21h, 46w, 47 and numerous others. Where I'm at, a "Tall Boy" would be the first series of Leslies, most notable was the 31h. These Leslies stood over four feet tall, one speed, 30 watt tube amp, and electro-magnet speaker. And, I might add, the most incredible sound.
