Amazing Lounge Renovation: Starting From a Blank Canvas - Our French Renovation, The Good Life

We bought an abandoned French farmhouse and stripped it back to it's bare bones. Essentially we had the much fabled blank canvas to decorate and furnish as we so desired.
This gave us the opportunity to put our own stamp, with colours, textures, materials, tones and personal choices of lighting.
However, the problem was were do you start? We were in a precarious void.
We had to think carefully. When your heart is set on an idea, it is important to take time, stand back and visualize it in a space. Sometimes, the heart will need to wait or broaden it's scope.
As well as being attractive and welcoming, a lounge needs to be both practical and comfortable.
Our salon was very dark, we needed to add plenty of light, however introducing anything modern into a room with a massive carved stone 19th fireplace would simple clash, so which particular era do we go for? Or do we try merge a couple of eras, in our own bohemian chic style?
Achieving the mythological timeless look, often involves hiding modern necessities such as insulation, electricity and internet and careful selecting colours, materials and furniture from the past that blend seamlessly into modern use. In so doing, maybe it will be future proof.

It does feel like a gentleman’s lounge in that room. I could see a Hunter green color and chesterfield sofa and chairs by the fire. Maybe some green toile curtains for a bit of French twist? Whatever you do I’m sure it will be cozy and beautiful!

Its great to see you two so purposeful and deliberate...you did a wonderful job with the oak beam. Love your stained glass windows - we did something similar, took some out of the old house and reused them in the refurb. This lounge has so much potential - really looking forward to seeing where you take it. Is it getting cold there in France now, where do you two get warm? I live in Hawaii and winter is my favorite time of year - so we are getting to the good part now. Summer is great too but it gets a little warm some afternoons. Only ever seen temps go below 60 or above 90 a couple of times in 25 years.

No too cold yet. Still around 65 degrees F during the day. First days of rain this week for 3 months. Winter does get cold. It drops to nearly 20 degrees.
