Great content as always! I remember using some of these softwares when my dad gave me his old iMac G4 when I was around 14. PPC Macs were already obsolete at the time but I still managed to get some use out of it thanks to projects like macintosh garden

I lived through this era but never had a computer as nice as the G4 I have now. The first Mac I bought ever was a G3 450 but things moved so fast that I sold it after only about 2 years for a PowerMac G4 466 which I upgraded the hell out of and later had dual G5. It was cool at the time but now it has better appeal. Not sure if you felt like that then...

I'm impressed to see people still trying to keep up new things working for the ppc computers, the best for me I have several G4 that really got me doing tons of great jobs.

I've had mine a year now, I bought it October, dual 1.4 GHz and meant to make this video many months ago. The GTA video I made, I hacked a ATI Radeon 9600 from a G5 for PowerMac G4 as I needed OpenGL 2.0 support kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6rRh2B6eb6Whtk Also I made a list of games too. blog.greggant.com/posts/2024/02/19/the-a-tier-late-powerpc-gaming-list.html

@ As it happens, I had already dug my old iBook G4 yesterday to play an old retro game this weekend: Harpoon Classic. The iBook is set up to dual boot between 10.4 and Sorbet. I had wondered about replacing the HD with an SSD, but I’ve read that job is a bit of a pain.

Thanks for this one! Motivation to triage a couple of old Powermac G4 systems I've owned or inherited over the years and use their weighty, stylish case design for something other than really nice end tables. 😉 Unfortunately, not a lot in the way of PPC Linux out there or they could be fully functional systems, but Tigerbrew opens the door to a lot more Linux FLOSS utility .

Ah the late PowerPC era, when Apple still cared about open standards, upgradability and repairability, and every OSX release was significantly better and more polished.

the underlying software that your NAS uses for AFP is called netatalk. you can run netatalk on any unix system, if you're on windows you can run it under WSL
@rickkarrer8370
@rickkarrer8370 16 күн бұрын
For some further clarification on file sharing protocols: Apple dropped AFP on macOS 11 Big Sur. There is a third-party Samba server that you can install on macOS 11 and newer., using Brew, but I never got it to work. Instead, I'm using FileZilla's FTP Server on my Mac Studio., and connecting to it via FTP from older Macs that don't support SMB2. My only problem with FTP is that it will occasionally not work correctly, or my order Max will get disconnected after a period of time (and no, it's not a time out setting,, it's just buggy). There's also a way to set up NFS sharing, but it was really buggy for me.,
@dmug
@dmug 16 күн бұрын
I saw something about brew smb sharing but I can connect to the PowerMac G4 from my other computers, just not the inverse... so that's good enough.
@GradythaStudips
@GradythaStudips 16 күн бұрын
Personally (no clue exactly what i did, also EXTREMELY weird use case) but id have my xserve on mojave connected, and id select option do file sharing over both smb+afp and that would work well both ways.

Very cool! Thinking about installing Linux on my late 12” PowerBook. Maybe dual boot it with Sorbet. I like that the machine can have some modernity, I don’t need much in my writer workflow, just not thrilled about doing extra work to making sure everything works. From my (admittedly limited) experience and research, dual booting with Linux seems like a daunting task on these machines … maybe I’m crazy?
@dmug
@dmug 15 күн бұрын
Honestly, I've never done it but perhaps I should try, if I recall right, it requires booting into OpenFirmware.
@Bushidounohana

@ yeah, in reality it’s probably not the catastrophe I’m imagining, and I have yet to bork a system from OpenFirmware (famous last words?), but I’ve also never successfully pulled it off, either. If you do give it a toss, I’d be interested in seeing how it goes!

If price and/or space is a consideration You might consider a Mac Mini G4 as often they can be found cheap. Often they'll pop up missing the PSU at e-cycle shops for about $50, and the PSU can be found on ebay for about $10-12 shipped. Spec wise, it's pretty solid, especially for OS 9. The 9200 Pro GPU with hacked drivers works in OS 9 and the 1.25 GHz G4 is blistering fast for OS 9. They'll run OS X Tiger just fine although not really a retro gaming OS X powerhouse with the 9200 Pro with only 32 MB of VRAM and lacking OpenGL 2.0 support but certainly can play many early OS X releases.

@@dmug That's something cool to consider, I never gave a second thought to those early mac minis! I have a powermac G4 Cube, and early blueberry imac G3 and a flower power imac G3, however all of these are excruciatingly slow with 10.4 tiger 🤣 I just searched on craigslist in my local area and found someone selling a 2006 Mac Pro with the display and peripherals and boxes for $100! I hope he gets back to me!

I still have a 2000 PPC G4 with an upgraded 1.2GHz CPU. I use it for ripping DVDs every now and then. I have a 2013 INtel iMac which I use every day. You know why I don’t use the PPC every day? Because it’s painful. It’s not fun. It’s M4 time.

Yep, stayed 3 days in Gimmelwald, beautiful area. Switzerland makes our infrastructure look sad. Driving a car onto a train to be transported through a mountain was a first for me. I don't think I've been anywhere as consistently as nice as Schweiz and made sense why it always is near the top of the best standards of living / quality of life metrics. There are places as nice here but we're very much a place of haves and have nots. That said, Switzerland isn't easy on the wallet, I think the only place more spendy I've been in Iceland. As someone from the Pacific Northwest, the rugged peaks and mountain towns appeal to me.

I've always wanted a Sonnet 1 GHz or 1.2 GHz CPU for my 733mhz Quicksilver PowerMac G4. Anyone know where to find one? Are they super rare or is there another PowerPC Motorola CPU option?
@dmug
@dmug 16 күн бұрын
There were many like NewerTech, Powerlogix, etc but they are pretty rare. I had a powerlogix 1.2 G4 in a DA powermac G4. When I sold it I didn’t take out the upgrade, I left it in the computer. Probably better off buying a different Mac based on the rarity. It’s why I nabbed a dual 1.4 GHz G4, I figured I’d never find a dual 1.8 GHz or even crazier the dual 2 GHz. I think every Mac has every make and model listed.
