Regarding The Stamps Drive-O-Matic. Robert Stamps had an amp repair shop in the San Fernando Valley (Los Angeles, CA) just a few doors down from Norman's Rare Guitars when Norman's was on the corner of Tampa and Van Owen.(or was it Victory?, it's been a while). Robert's shop was called The Amp Shop (not to be confused with a shop in North Hollywood/Studio City with the same name, I heard Robert sold the name to them). Robert specialized in vintage amp repair and sales. He had one of the largest collections of vintage amps I've ever seen, maybe more than the Aspen Pitman collection (Groove Tube). He had rented four bedrooms in a house owned by a jazz keyboard player, and every room was filled to the top with every kind of amp worth having, you name it he had at least 4. All mint or near mint condition. Even a few early 60's Fender and a Vox AC30 still in their original boxes unopened (hilarious, Robert thought so too). And he still had amps stashed in his own house. I was told that he also had a few hundred of those 1930's and 40's baklight and celluloid AM radios. He had the shop from, I think, the 80's through (I think) 2010, the last time I was there was probably 2001, so I'm not sure. During the mid to late 90's he built the Drive-O-Matic. (I still have one from the first batch he gave me). Robert is a very good guitarist as well, and had been for several years the guitarist for The King Cotton Band, and had also toured in Mary Kay Place's band, among others. I think he was born in or around 1950 and had been a working guitarist since he was a teenager. Another well known L.A. guitarist that went by the stage name of B.B. Chun King also worked as an amp tech in Robert's shop. He had a hand in developing the Drive-O-Matic I believe. B.B., his real name was Allen something I can't remember now, sadly passed away a few years ago during a recording session. I can't tell you anything more about the Drive-O-Matic that you probably can figure out for yourself. He said it was designed to be used with an amp that was overdriven as opposed to a clean amp, although it works with any amp setting. It's one of those cool pedals that are rare as hen's teeth. That's all I know about it. I heard that Robert retired and lives in the Lake Tahoe area, but I don't know that as a fact. I'm sure someone else will chime in.

The Stamps overdrive was put out by Robert Stamps, who managed/owned the LA Amp Shop, a San Fernando valley shop that repaired gear and sold new and used amps. The shop still exists but Stamps sold out to a new owner around the late '90's (as I recall). Still a good gear shop to visit if you're visiting LA.

Hot Cake owner here...they have actually been updated in recent years with 2 extra switches. I think one is designed for bass use, but never used it, so can't officially confirm. There have been some pretty big names that have used the pedal over the years (ranging from the Stones, Crowded House & Oasis to Sonic Youth); it's a bit of a sleeper that still gets little recognition. I guess given it's totally hand made by Paul in NZ, stock is always limited & likely doesn't make it to the US all that much, unless specifically ordered. Shame Rhett had to deal with the volume pot being f¥^k~d so couldn't really have a decent test drive. Cheers fellas.

My son plays guitar in a punk noise band. He was the one that got me into pedals. I had the Boss Super Overdrive, a MXR phase,but that's all I used for years. Then he got me a to buy a Death by Audio,Thee Fuzzwar Overload. After that I have amassed quite a variety of pedals. Several JHS models as well. Now I'm always on the lookout for some cool pedal.

In the 90's my friend from LA discovered a great amp repair shop in Reseda. It was Mr. Stamps shop. He was a really nice guy. I was from New York and when I went out to visit my friend I would stop by his shop. I sent him my old 1972 Super Lead Marshall to fix up and he did a really nice job. He told me on one visit that he was making a pedal, the DRIVE-O-MATIC, I said I would buy one when it came out. I did buy my DRIVE-O_MATIC in November of 1996. I eventually sold it to my friend in LA(I doubt he still has it.) I still had the box when I sold it to him . I found my original receipt. I paid $179.99 for serial number 960040. It was a cool pedal that I should have kept.

If I recall correctly at the time, the commentary around the Barber Direct Drive was that it was a good Dumble-in-a-box. I really like turning the tone up high and using it on low gain as a tube screamer, but it has a very rich mid-heavy setting that does sound (maybe not feel) a lot like a Dumble

Rarely see the Stamp mentioned anywhere - had mine from new - great sounding pedal once you figure what the heck it's supposed to be for - two different channels, shared output and presence, A and B toggle switch and so gorgeous to just look at and hold, and I can never quite figure out what it's actually doing. And the power socket is jack.
@jordandangelo180

The Prescription Electronics pedal was awesome. Les Paul Gold Top paint, nothing wrong with that. You can never go wrong with Prescription and I’ll always have a soft spot for that brand. My first really legit pedal memory was The Prescription Experience fuzz pedal in 5th grade. I remember being a kid and riding my bike and heard this distorted guitar tone that sounded different and ticker than regular distortion I’ve heard on Green Day or Weezer albums coming from a window close by. Just some chords but at the time I was obsessed with anything to do with guitar or anyone who could play a riff or a lick was instantly someone I wanted to be and looked up to. So I sat and listened from a distance and eventually, through playing street hockey with the younger brother and asking about the guitar tone I heard, I finally invited up to see the rig. It was a Marshall JCM 800 combo, a Prescription Electronics Experience pedal, some random Boss pedals, I think a BF-2 and a DS-1 and a Phase Shifter and an all white Woodstock style Hendrix Strat. I thought you had to know someone to acquire a pedal like that because I had spent a lot of time at Sam Ash with my dad in those days and never saw any pedals like that except a giant Boss pedalboard they said set up where every Boss pedal in the store was on this board and you can try it out through headphones or an amp if you were brave enough. Anyway, great show.

I have utmost respect for your skills and content. Sometimes I watch to help decide what gear to buy. Being retired and an amateur musician, I can't afford to make costly mistakes. Since this is about how to make money as an accomplished professional musician... My only complaint with the KZbin/social media guitar eco-system is a perceived lack of transparency in gear reviews. It would be great if reviewers said at the start where they got the gear under review, do they personally play it, and a list of sponsors at the end of the video.

I love my TrueTone Route 66. Wasn't able to find much info about the Reverend Drivetrain, which I knew it was based on. Nice to know a little more about its pedigree. It's a great overdrive! Very versatile with the blend knob and the bass and treble controls. Clearer than a TS, but it can do that too. Add a very good compressor section - what's not to like. And it only takes up one outlet on the power supply!

Awww... man. I was waiting for the guitar slide back and forth free style versus kind of playing. hahaha! I'm also surprised you don't like the tube screamer. The Reverend Drivetrain is the greatest take on the tubescreamer thing I've ever heard, so I bought a couple of them used after they were discontinued. Then it was revived as Garage Tone Overdrive Drivetrain and I bought one of those as well for almost no money at all. Not sure if that one is discontinued as well now. It sounds almost exactly the same as the real thing and doesn't take up as much space on the pedalbioard. If you look for the original it should be a Drivetrain II and with two black dots on the bottom cover, That's the best sounding one. Killer SRV tone on the neck pickup on a strat into a clean amp. Reverend also (still) makes great guitars by the way

I have a Visual Sound silver case Jekyll and Hyde. It was cool when it came out as there weren't too many dual circuit ODs back then. I had a Bixonic Expandora "tuna can" - the one with the dip switches on the inside. I didn't like it and gave it to my friend's kid. I also have a Tech 21 XXL - now that's a cool OD/distortion. It has this sag control where you can get it to sound like an old tube amp about to die with the compressed, delayed attack when you hit it hard. On one of my pedalboards I have an old Radial Engineering Tonebone - which I can only describe as a Boogie MkII overdrive in a pedal. That's stowed away somewhere. Man, all these great memories of toys from the past. Great video. Cheers!

I really regret selling my Dual Drive - I just saw one on Facebook for $450. Such a great pedal.

Barber DD is the one pedal I've held onto the longest. No matter which drives I try, the DD is still on the board.

Hotcake is one of the best! works on everything. I use it as an always on low low low gain dynamic still tone shaping pre amp.

What would you say would be the best first pedal or two for someone starting out on bass? Keep up the good work.

I bought a Drive-O-Matic new back in mmm, '91 or so, I think I bought it directly from Stamps thru the mail. It never really worked for me, too gritty, as Josh points out, "not smooth." Finally sold it. I may still have the "literature" that came with it which as I remember was a Xerox copy of a Guitar Player review with some highlighter notes. If I ever stumble across it, Josh, you'll be the first to know.
