You can see him micro-correcting through almost every corner - the car gets a little loose and he catches it before the casual observer can even process what's happening, and he's calmly chatting about it the whole time. Every time he snaps opposite for a fraction of a second in a corner, the rest of us would have been in the gravel/tires/wall. Watch it again with this in mind - he can feel it starting to let go before any of us have any idea what's going on. Looks perfectly smooth - that's the talent. This is driving at 10/10ths.

The car has a tendency to correct itself if you intentionally loosen your grip on the wheel.

Yeah the corrections look much more like they do on a go-kart than a car

Second lap when someone like Derek Bell is so focussed, that he doesn´t talk anymore. Even thrilling and scary just to watch it.

Met Derek Bell at a hospitality event. He kindly drove me around a circuit and high speed bowl in a Porsche 993.Unbelievable skill as it was damp and before he took me out the mechanic asked him to be careful as the tyres didn’t have a lot of tread left.Didn’t seem to make any difference to his absolutely amazing skills.

Thank you Duke Video ! Yes best ever made "In car 956", reason why i have Porsche 993 Carrera 95 to day. Before that i had Porsche 911 carrera 3,2 1984. Even after owning Porsche for over 20 years, driving the Porsche makes me smile. I have watched this video since early 90s, also "Ticket to ride" and "ARI VATANEN - IN-CAR RAC RALLY 1983" is mandatory to buy.

The new circuit at kyalami has an average speed lower than Monaco, that gives you a sense of what has happened since the 80’s

Yeah it's scary just watching him drive it from inside the cockpit. His micro- corrections around those corners are amazing. I kept thinking, 'You're on the brink, stop talking, don't crash! You can hear those whoosh & whistle sounds of the turbos between each gear shift. And I thought the Legendary 917 was SCARY Enough!

I'm thinking back during the mid-1980s perhaps 85 that old circuit was taken off the schedule not long after this I believe..

Pretty sure it was '84. I still have my original VHS tape and I watch it every year or so. The camera took up most of the "passenger" side of the cockpit. Bell's lap of the Nurburgring was mesmerizing, and was also the 5th fastest lap of the 'ring at that point. Of course it's on DVD now and is well worth getting.
