I wonder if they have a higher rate of delamination or fissures due to not cleaning welding surfaces, minimal welding of layered billet (reducing oxidation) and no use of borax. Is all that stuff necessary? End billet looked pretty good.

The process of multi folding the billot provides for a very strong product (very similar to samurai sword making) of course if using mild steel it limits its 'hardness' unless its case hardened which will provide a 'thin' surface hardness. The best approach would be to use a carbon steel that could be hardened and tempered after finishing.

Flux is needed for a good weld. Also, dropping the billet on the ground before the next heat is not good. Creates a blade that will probably fail.

There are a good number of people here in the states that constantly trash talk anything not American made, some genuinely believe that nobody can make "x" better than we can. I say screw that noise, that is a beautiful axe and it is truly impressive to watch you all work.

The Damascus design visually came out very well as dirty as the metal was. But I'd like to see the final blade tested to see if it chips out or breaks.

I was thinking the same thing. They didn't remove the scale or the rust, and they didn't use any flux. They just got it hot as hell and then beat the heck out of it. I'm surprised it didn't have cracks & inclusions.
