The age of those machines is old. I worked in a couple steel mills. While the machiniery is old in this video, the process is pretty much the same. Just a bit more automated and WAY safer. For example, that guy you seen putting card board into the recoiled steel strips... They don't do that any more (mostly). There is a pit that the strips will dip into to remove the slack from uneven thickness strips. I personally have experience doing the exact same thing he did. I know of a man that was at another steel mill that was doing the same thing. He had long sleeves on and gloves. He was feeing in a piece of cardboard and was pulled into the recoiler. It goes without saying that he didn't return to work the next day.
@phuturephunk
@phuturephunk Жыл бұрын
@@lm4278 I noticed that part. Could you expand on how exactly the cardboard works to defeat the slack issue? I was kinda boggled that he was doing that. I mean I get that the rollers are moving at a constant speed, I just never though there would be length differences in the strip as it came in.
@lm4278
@lm4278 Жыл бұрын
@@phuturephunk No problem! the steel sheet isn't perfectly uniform over the entire width, and length. There are thickness differences. Could be .001 or less, but over a distance, that adds up to some of the strips sagging. So cardboard is used to take up that extra sag, so the coils stay relatively "even". That's what the pits are used for now. When a new machine is installed, they dig a 15-20, sometimes 30 foot pit right after the slitter. That's the part that cuts the coil into smaller coils. The will run the coil with a loop that falls into the pit so if there is a discrepancy in the thickness, the slack can go into the pit. It wasn't fun being the guy feeding cardboard into the coils. One time, we were working with some seriously high carbon steel. It almost wouldn't go through the slitter to cut it down. We go it to go through after a couple hours of fighting it. As we got it into the recoiler and made a couple pretty sketchy turns on it, one of the coils snapped right at the recoiler and came down with such force that it took a chunk of cement out about 24 inches long, and about 1 inch deep. I just happened to be the guy standing next to it. About 3 feet away. Needed new underwear after that.

@@lm4278 a pit is nice and easy way to get rid of loose windings. But if you can't you need to fix this by having your profile nailed to perfection at rolling stage. What I'm wondering is why they don't use C hooks for lifting. The way they do it can't be good for the edge quality which is very important for your buttwelds.

This is pretty much the same job my father’s company did in the Chicago area. They pretty much re-rolled, slit, resized, and stamped steel that came from overseas and then shipped it back out around the United States. More or less the exact same equipment I saw them have back in the 1980s (and I’m sure most of it was sourced in the 1960s-1970s, in that same off green color). Although there was less manual work, and more safety gear.
