I am Alberta "B" Pressure Welder and have welded miles of pipe but never paid much attention to how they make said pipe. I very much enjoyed this vid, very educational. It covers the manufacture of welded pipe which is of reasonable quality but the best quality (or at least better quality) pipe is made via an extrusion process. It is less prone to cracking/failing and is preferred for pressure containing applications.

No see how large pipe is formed,welding is not a problem.

People are clueless as to why things cost so much. Look at the machinery and equipment it takes to manufacture a length of pipe like these!
@johnwarwick4105Ай бұрын
Yes always amazes me that as that all it can make ( though a few different sizes I guess)
@David_Lloyd-JonesАй бұрын
James, You're the one who seems clueless: things are as cheap as they are because of the massive investment we have made in productive equipment to make it all -- cheaply, efficiently, and when and where it's needed.

Pipe made by rolling flat plate into a cylinder and then welding the longitudinal joint is OK but the best quality (and thus more expensive) pipe is extruded pipe. Because it has no longitudinal welded joint, extruded pipe is stronger and less likely to fail. Search for "extrusion pipe process" here on KZbin. Basically they start with a round billet, heat it and then push it through a die onto a mandrel, no welding required.
@buckylaineАй бұрын
This video is about giant pipe. The largest DOM machine in the world can't event do 30". Of course extruded pipe or tubing is generally stronger than it's welded seam counterpart of the same size and thickness but quality is about how well either process is done. You can have a poor quality extrusion that isn't as strong as a better quality welded piece.

How does the inside Bead remover actually work. Seems impossible in a continuous tube.
@michaelgarrison688Ай бұрын
The rolled tube is not closed until just before the welding. The inside bead remover is mounted on an arm about 800mm before the welding. The arm is about 16mm wide and 2m long. The thinness of the arm is not affected by bending as it is only has longitudinal forces acting on it. The head is mounted on a holder that is near the same size as the final welded product inside diagram and has wheels mounted at various locations to keep it positioned properly.
@bradbergman3673Ай бұрын
Depends what you mean by "continuous". If you mean something like "infinite length" then of course it's impossible. I didn't rewind to the point where they show the inside bead remover but I suspect they cut it into lengths before they remove the inside bead. I have seen pipe in 20 and 40 foot lengths but never continuous (infinite length) pipe and I suspect I never will but I keep an open mind :)
