@Вероника Заглотова The sound obviously will differ though, and wood probably will sound "better" Then again, this is a presumption, because I'm going by the conventional logic that plastic = cheap, I'm not nearly as capable as being able to tell the difference between plastic and wood on a recorder

Until the late 18th century, the recorder WAS the flute. Not for nothing was the instrument written for by the likes of Morley and Tallis through to Bach and Handel... Believe me, the instrument's unpopularity comes from the fact that ANYONE can make a noise out of it; however, making music out of it is as difficult as with any other instrument. But, when one can do it, it's a damned fine instrument :-)

Take away the double holes for the pinky and the thumb hole and things get just a bit more challenging still. Playing a chromatic scale on a tin whistle brings you less than a millimeter away from squeaky disaster. In many ways simple instruments are more challenging that complex ones. Fipples do make thing a fair bit easier though.

@WeAreEnglishCubers
@WeAreEnglishCubers 10 жыл бұрын
Intonation is something you can train, but I like to think that it's a lot like intelligence, in that you can train your brain to be faster but however hard you try you can't really "improve" your intelligence outside of your natural born capacity. It's about the combination of passion and ability, otherwise I would be a world class flautist!
@metapod
@metapod 10 жыл бұрын
There's also a factor of time! No one becomes a world-class flautist overnight. But anyone can, it would just take longer. Most people would give up and say they don't have the "natural" ability. Similar to intelligence, almost everyone has an extremely high potential. Even the people who can grow more easily don't reach that potential. The human mind is pretty limitless. Ask any world-class anything, and they will tell you they don't believe in natural gift or born talent. Some of them had a good inclination and got to their point easily, but a lot worked hard from the ground up. Some are not even naturally inclined and had to work even harder. It's definitely harder for some people, but never impossible. The human brain's limit is well beyond our reach. As long as you keep trying, you can keep improving. And telling yourself you can't get where you want because you don't have the "natural" talent is only inhibiting yourself. Belief and confidence play a huge factor in what the mind and body are capable of. That's why we have things like placebo effect and even things like phantom pregnancies and people who learn to see everything upside down... the brain and body can pretty much do anything as long as it believes it can. So I'd say the reason you're not a world-class flautist is because you're telling yourself you don't have the ability... and you just have to keep working til you get there :)

I had to learn recorder when I was 8. My school had a recorder concert in which group of other third graders tried to squeak through ode to joy without giggling about how stupid we sounded. Fun times.
