I was very lucky as my grandfather taught me how to French polish. He had been a headmaster before he retired so he could teach. The wad of material that you apply the polish is called a rubber by the way. The first thing I polished on my own was a burr walnut veneered pie crust table. Like you I have no idea how many coats but it looked like it had a piece of glass over it. It was amazing until my dad put his glass of gin and tonic on it. Shellac dissolves in alcohol. So I had a lovely ring on the table. Took it all off and used varnish. That piece is beautiful and I hope you keep up with the French polishing, it brings wood to life.

Hi J Bar T.Someone else asked that ? so you might want to read my lengthy response. Personally, I think the French Polish looked just as good as polyurethane. The FP took 6 hours, the Poly would have taken 90 min. and it would have been more durable. Thanks for asking!

Beautiful. I love how you try different techniques. What makes this technique better than the “usual”? It looks very time consuming. Would you do it again? I guess I don’t know much about mahogany, except it is an old and hard wood. I didn’t realize it had so much grain.

Like the result, good color combination. French polish is still rather matte but even. Always a choice between this stage and working it to a real deep high gloss.
@FurnitureFlippingForProfit2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Peter- I prefer a matte/satin finish because I think it shows off the grain more. When you have a high gloss finish the reflective surface hides some of the grain. Thanks so much for your comments!

Not a great idea if kitty does what kitties do when marking turf. Cat pee will partially dissolve shellac. The better finish would be epoxy or boat bottom paint.

How did the French Polishing compare to using a top coat, i.e. did the extra hours/materials make a substantial difference to the finished result?
@FurnitureFlippingForProfit2 жыл бұрын
LOL! You are the first person to ask. I wondered if anyone would ask. If I had to do it all over again I honestly would have used water based polyurethane! I have this sitting next to the Jacobeon buffet (the blue one). It too is mahogany and I actually like the poly better! It only took about 90 min to finish the buffet that was 6 times BIGGER and it took 6 hours to do this little table. As I mentioned in the description, I have had quite a few viewers suggest that I do a French Polish- well, now I have done one and I like water based poly better! Just being honest. The poly is a lot more durable too!

@FurnitureFlippingForProfit2 жыл бұрын
OMG! I do too! I just could NOT believe that it actually vacuumed up all the dust. It really was not very loud either. I did not even have to turn down the volume on the clips when I was using it. I always have to turn down the volume when I am sanding. The company just increased the discount another 10% so if you are interested it getting one, now is the time. The Dewalt version is $650.

Just a little tip, lower the blade on the table saw to just cut above the wood you are cutting. It will cut better, and if your hand should slip it want cut so deep.

Nooooo I have not painted furniture on my youtube channel for several months and I probably will not be doing it any time soon. My viewers all seem to prefer a stained finish. I only paint a piece now if it cannot possibly be stained because it has so much hidden damage.
