AMAZING RESTORATION of RARE VINTAGE 1930s WATERFALL DRESSER. Relaxing Furniture Restoration Video

This vintage waterfall dresser had been spray painted with primer and used in a garage to store tools for many years. It was calling out to me to restore it. Unfortunately, when I stripped off the paint, the years of abuse and neglect were apparent! Cigarette burns were noted on the top and hundreds of scratches, gouges and marred areas littered the top and sides.
I have never seen such a badly damaged finish!
While these areas were not scratched very deep into the wood veneer, they were embedded with years and years of dirt, oil and grime! Simple sanding would never have gotten rid of them because it would have gone through the veneer.
More drastic measures were required.
I kept asking myself, "Can I restore this original stained finish on the top and sides or should I just paint it and stain the drawers?" It certainly would have been easiest to simply paint the top and sides black and stain the drawers.
I wanted to give it my best to try to restore it ..... watch the video to see if I was successful!

That's just WOW. thank you for sharing and taking the time to bring it back to such beauty. I can never understand how people can paint and then miss treat wooden furniture. It always upsets me when people abuse wooden furniture so badly. My Dad did restoration for a living and i have come to appreciate wooden furniture and in treating the wood respect the makers of them.

Because it’s not valuable to their aesthetic. This kind of furniture looks old and fusty to many people. Perhaps the man who used it in his garage already had a household full of furniture he, and presumably his wife, had. Different times, different styles Sometimes furniture and other pieces of things special to the elders are a burden.

Hi Melinda. I think he had no clue how to restore it. Under the paint, it was in pretty bad shape. So, I give him a little credit for NOT just taking it to the landfill. At least he got some more use out of it until he was ready to pass it on to me!

Oh gee Desiree thanks so very much!!! I too was very emotional. I was so frustrated because I was afraid I would have to paint it!!! When I began to apply the stain, I could still see a few of the marks but the stain covered them beautifully. Well, 3 coats of the stain!

This is my favorite video so far! I fell in love with waterfall furniture when I was young because both of my grandmothers had waterfall bedrooms. I have never used this wood bleach before. It is actually hard to find! Regular bleach would never have lightened it enough so I was glad that I had the Zinsser. The only place I could find it was Menards. I had to have it shipped to me.

Thank you for removing that awful paint and you did a wonderful job repairing the scratches and veneer. I would have liked to have seen it with a lighter stain. Like cherry to bring out the wood gratin.

That would be striking, but not idiomatic. And I think it’s that darkness of finish that puts some people off. If you’re not a fan of this period/style the color can make the pieces look heavy.

What a stunningly beautiful piece of furniture. Art Deco is my favourite style. Sadly, in the 70s, a decade not renowned for good taste, it was often painted and all that lovely woodgrain ruined. Such a lucky find, for bith you and the dresser.

I'm so glad! You can get piece on Facebook Marketplace for such a reasonable fee. Of course, some are grossly over priced but if you keep watching you will be amazed what you find. As you were revealing more and more of the original art of the piece, I realized my parents bedroom suite is this type/style of work. My 92 year old Mother still uses. Bed frame, hi boy and vanity w tufted stool. I have always loved it. So glad it is in great shape and being used. Your work is a piece of ART!

Lovely job. I collect waterfall furniture. It all began with a dresser which belonged to my grandmother who passed when I was 9 months old. Now I’m 63 and have three bedrooms of waterfall furniture, a sewing machine cabinet, buffet, desk and living room end table. A few pieces need a little work, but for their age they are remarkable.

LOL Lind!! I listen to my viewers and overwhelmingly they do not like the music and prefer the shop sounds. Based on the number of views and likes (and comments) it seems that my viewers prefer no speaking at all. That is why I post written directions during the video.
