We live on the CT shore of LI sound and see them but not so many! And none orange so far. I love the way you hold up the shell so I can guess what it is and THEN tell the name instead of revealing the name right away. Makes it more fun. Look forward to your next shelling!

Wowzer. Great vid. That is some fine shelling, sir! I am so envious. All those whelks and beautiful bright bay scallops...maybe some aquaculture seeding around there, to produce those scallop colors?

Hi Bird Winter, what an interesting point about the aquaculture seeding - it's quite possible. This is hands down the best place I have ever been for Bay Scallops. It's like Sanibel Island but all Bay Scallops haha!

@@solaceinshelling6552 After searching on the internet, I found the answer: There is a massive scallop restoration program based in Orient Harbor led by Cornell Cooperative Extension (claims to be the biggest scallop restoration effort in the US). They have introduced millions of hatchery-raised babies into this area over many years, so that’s where the bright colors are coming from. In 2019 and 2020, almost the entire adult scallop population died off in the area, so that would put a lot of shells on the beach-the cause of the die-offs is still being investigated. Interesting reading.

Hello! Well, honestly the best time to shell at any beach would typically be low tide because there is so much more surface exposed. With that said, it all really depends on the tides, weather and luck! I have been to some beaches that are supposed to be the best in the world for shelling, and found very little. I have also been to some random places and had great luck. Get out there, explore and you won't be disappointed!

Hi friend! To answer your question truthfully, most of the time I don't know where to go, haha! Much of the exploring I do is just that... but that's why I try to share as much of the sights and sounds of the places I explore, in the content I create for this channel. When I was about 12 years old and just becoming interested in shell collecting, I read about this particular place in a book called "The Art of Shelling", by Chuck and Debbie Robinson. After many years, I ended up moving to New York City(near this place on Long Island), and decided to visit! Thanks so much for watching!
