It's the worst run of all time. It irreparably ruined Peter's most important supporting character (without a retcon), everyone was OOC, the plots led nowhere, it's full of dropped plots and plotholes, and has no redeeming value beyond the art, but since the art is depicting terrible things, well, it also kind of sucks. This issue solved nothing. IMO it's the worst issue of the run outside of Dead Language. Just.....complete garbage. The reality is even though the Wells run is "over", it's not, really. Because the SQ he set up remains the SQ going forward. A black hole and a stain on the series forever.
@geoffcole89948 күн бұрын
The only thing good about this finale issue, was the art and that’s it. After two and half years, the only closure of what we get between Peter and MJ, is that she thanks Peter for saving and bringing her home without even apologizing to him for her earlier behavior towards him at the beginning of this run. While it’s clear they still love each other, the hole that Zeb created will take time and effort to fully heal when a new writer comes in and actually cares for them. Now MJ has this reputation as someone who cheated on Peter, which she DID NOT, as she was directly manipulated and forced into a relationship with a complete stranger by raising two fake kids. As one last deliberate middle finger to the fans, we have Peter and MJ with their new love interests going on double date and acting everything is going to great from now on , which it absolutely it will not be.

@geoffcole8994 The problem for me is that I actually enjoyed parts of the (2017) Ben Reilly: Scarlet Spider comic and liked the Beyond Spider-Man arc (specifically from after Ben actually asked for Peter's permission and started acting like Ben Reilly until the whole memory BS happened), and then in this issue when Ben said he's decided to live his own life -while the conversation and dialogue wasn't written well- it felt like a minor step in the right direction... to immediately take two steps back with Ben wanting Peter's life. I believe Chasm or an evil Ben Reilly CAN be written well, but to begin with Ben Reilly needs to be written well and sometimes it feels like some writers actually do know how to do that, but mostly whether it's the writers or editorial it just doesn't happen. This kinda all applies to all current Spider-Man characters/stories, but I don't even know why it is, but it's Ben Reilly I care about most and just would rather not see at all if I have to see him like this.

The first part shows Tombstone being not guilty (and thus freed from prison) and Peter (as Spider-Man) fighting Sandman and telling Aunt May why her nephew called Spider-Man for help. That’s it. The second part shows Rek-Rap being here to stay, which might result in Joe Kelly barely using him in his run of ASM. Although, I do find it hilarious that Peter has to pay three thousand dollars after helping Rek-Rap at the hospital. For the third part, I like that Peter and MJ worked together to defeat criminals; however, their going out on a double date with Paul and Shay (in which Peter is going out with Shay and MJ going out with Paul) is a “screw you” to us because we want to see Peter and MJ together. Overall, this is an okay (but weak) backup. For the fourth part, I like that Peter and Logan celebrated Logan’s birthday in a bar to talk and spend time with each other, without Logan getting hunted or attacked by Sabertooth (since Logan killed him in the Sabertooth War in his solo series). Overall, this is a nice backup. For the fifth part, I like that Peter and Ben have a chat, where Ben tells Peter that he’s not obsessed with him anymore (which is good); however, it shows him attempting to steal Peter’s life again at the end of this part, which shows that Ben is still not over it. Overall, this backup is weak. For the sixth and final part, it’s interesting that Peter was told by Doom the Sorcerer Supreme that he’s going to die eight times. Let’s hope that Joe Kelly knows what he’s doing in his ASM run. Overall, this backup is interesting. Something that I can say for this comic is that we’re finally free of the Zeb Wells run. That’s it.

@WeirdScienceComics I went back to JMS run in ASM. Reminding myself how everyone in the series were very mentally mature and I was hoping the theme would evolve on its own until certain people mixed their real problems up with fiction and use alternate earths as excuses such as the movies, games and Ultimate Spider-Man to get away from the heat they caused. If they want to keep things afloat, they need to take notes from DC and learn why heroes like Superman and Wally West are married and have families and don't have anything nor anyone to hold them back from being inspirational. On the contrary, they encourage readers on how to keep a relationship healthy and be more responsible after tying up the knot. As for Nick Lowe and the other higher-ups, I'd like to politely say that a man who has a phobia of marriage is a boy and will always stay a boy - or worse, is diagnosed with Peter Pan syndrome.

This is extremely frustrating, Wells is a lame ass writer that has no excitement, love, or enthusiasm for Spider-Man and it absolutely shows how little he knows and cares for the character. This whole Peter and MJ will they won’t they thing is turning readers off and away. Knowing that Marvel won’t get them back together and still dangling the idea over the people who still want them back together is hurting their interest. Yeah this entire story was just bad and frankly gave us nothing to resolve anything which is just garbage and big slap In the face for us Spider-Man fans, and to make it ten times worse we are still trapped with the same garbage we have now which sucks, and just proves my point more and more that Marvel just doesn’t give a damn about us Spider-Man fans who want peter Parker Spider-Man and Mary Jane to be married and they have there daughter mayday Parker spider girl alive and kicking in the mainstream marvel universe. Which is just isn’t fair because other media like Spider-Man ps4 Spider-Man miles morales and Spider-Man 2 for the ps5 and of course Spiderverse movies let Peter Parker Spider-Man and Mary Jane be married and have there daughter mayday Parker the future spidergirl alive and kicking, while the comics on the other hand are hellbent of not allowing Peter Parker Spider-Man grow up which is just sad and depressing in my opinion.

Great review and video, Jim. This run was complete and utter trash, and It's not going to get any better from the Nick Lowe appearance at the Comic Com. It seems from his discussion and a panel he previewed, it looks like Felicia and Peter together kissing might mean Kelly and Ireland are bringing her back to be Peter's love interest. If that's the case, I'm all for it because Marvel isn't going to bring Peter and MJ back together. It's 17 years and counting and doesn't seem like that's going to happen. As I've stated in numerous previous comments, if Marvel isn't going to pair up Peter and MJ, then it's time for Felicia to become his love interest not Shay, Michelle the lawyer, or some other irrelevant love interest. I'm dome with "ASM", I just hope "USM" stays the course, and hopefully gets more interesting. Regarding the Phillies, they need a complete overhaul, and it was a mistake extending Thomson's contract. However, Philly Sports Teams always reward failure. That's why the Phillies are the losingest franchise in all of the major sports and that's the reason the team only has 2 championships over 142 seasons. It's a joke!

I also blame editorial incompetence. Just can’t help wondering, “What exactly was said in the war room which made Zeb Wells plot out a 60 issue friend zone story arc?”. After sixty issues of Peter and “Lonny” aka Tombstone going at it, I just wanted to scream, “KISS HIM!” (Note sarcasm) Peter spent more time with Lonny than MJ over approximately sixty issues. Did the grand story elevate Tombstone into a Green Goblin or Doc Ock class arch nemesis? No. After sixty issues, Tombstone is still at par with the Puma (during the Black suit days) as an antagonist to Spider-man. I think this run could have worked if it was anyone else but Peter as the main protagonist. Then Zeb Wells would have had a clear field to play. As it stands, this is the most expensive forgettable run on Spider-man which will collect dust as a trade because it goes absolutely nowhere.

I find this review to be overly positive. It feels like you're grasping to find anything good to say when there is nothing of the sort. There is no redeeming this run, the choices made within the run, the way that it ended, etc. In 60 issues our developments to the character(s) are: MJ is fickle and betrayed Peter (Erasing decades of built-up continuity), Peter is a cuck, and Ms Marvel died for a few minutes. Poorly plotted, depicted, executed... you name it. This issue, as a stand-alone, is a double down on the bad decisions writ large, and literally lacks any real excitement or value, unless people wanted to pay 8 bucks for filler and a preview for the next storyline.
