Can a store-bought sayote will grow, or is there a business to buy already started plants? I would appreciate any input. Thank you very much.

I live in zone 5 and have no problem growing them, except have to replant them every spring as they do not survive through the winter here. You can buy them from the store. Look for chayote older with tough skin (use your nail to test). Allow the fruit to sit on the counter until it sprouts. They like sun and well drained soil which Florida is one of the best place to grow them. Hope this helps. Happy gardening.

Mi abuelos plantaba muchos chayotes ellos usaban lasos para que se enredara era una belleza otro secreto de donde soy yo del chayote ellos extraían las raíces más gruesas para comer y nunca usaron ningún fertilizante había mucha humedad que nunca hubo necesidad de regar con agua había lluvia en abundancia 🙏🏼.

yes one should be enough because the plant grows very big. in winter it goes dormant and then in spring again it come back to life and produces even more.
