In this video we travel to Sonora Mexico, to the wonderful Puerto Penasco, after an amazing time at the beach with the whole family, incredible food and beautiful scenery we come back home through Baja, while the whole state was being hit by cartel violence! We found out about it while we were still in Sonora.

Thanks for the memories of Puerto Penasco! I spent so much money at that fishmarket in the 80s I can’t count it. We used to trade suitcases of Budweiser for limits On the big blue scampi’s and other fish. We used to pull out on the sandy beach and just camp-there wasn’t a mega hotel in site… hope you made it over to JJ‘s Cantina for a cocktail…

it's unfortunate to see this kinda of situation happen in Mexico. Just this as an example would be an amazing destination to take and have way more tourism meaning much more economic opportunities for the locals. Mexico has so much to offer but it's being gatekept by violence and fear. Como he dicho antes, lo que seria poder viajar sin miedo en el interior del pais a todos esos lugares magicos que ofrece Mexico. Would open up a whole new world to many overlanders.

I’ve always loved Tecate…Back in the 90’s I was in the Navy at Camp Pendleton and me and my friends would take the historic train from Campo to Tecate. We’d hit the Mercado and various shops before relaxing in the Plaza where we’d eat tons of tacos and wait for sunset! Been a long time. I moved back to my native Texas when I retired from the USN in 2000. A few years later I wrote a song called “Slow Train To Tecate”. Don’t be surprised if I figure a way to send you a sound file of it. - - “Ol’ Scooter” from East Texas…

Hi Marco, an update on San Felipe. On Tuesday afternoon, the police chief, his deputy director and his commander were in a vehicle near the marina and they were ambushed by narcos. The deputy director and commander were killed. There were 8 men in two vehicles. Other police nearby returned fire and the men fled on foot leaving behind the vehicles, weapons, ammunition and bulletproof vests. One of the assailants was captured. KZbin deletes the link but you can find it at Paudal, Baja California: Police officers are ambushed and killed in San Felipe. My wife and I planned to head back to Mexico in two weeks but that's now on hold. Were we live is relatively safe, but we wouldn't go to town to shop or anything else until this is sorted out. We are also hearing they are getting shitty at the border. Someone we know was made to offload everting from their truck on the ground, things you normally would bring, and fined $250. Every truck with a camper shell is having to go through declare, etc. Right now I don't know what to think about all of this or whether there is a future there anymore.

It has happened twice recently in Caborca about 50 miles from where you are in this video but I bet you already knew that. I love Sonora, 10 trips/year to Rocky Point for the last 15 years. 20 years total experience in Sonora. Mostly Puerto Penasco but also Santo Tomas and Puerto Lobos to the South. San Luis RC a few times in the 06 Calderon War era... no issues. Wrong place at the wrong time kinda thing is what I worry about. Being targeted? Never. But recently in Caborca the block has been hot. Twice they've lit gas stations on fire and all hell broke loose in the last year or so. You guys are lucky to have Baja. Glad everyone made it home safe. And you mentioned the price of gas at about $4.61/ Gal for 91 octane. Which is not bad considering here in interior Alaska we are running $4.80/gal for premium (90/91) at the cheapest place in town (Costco).

Great video I really want to go to Cabo San Lucas this year but with what is happening I don’t know when we will be able to. I also want to visit Puerto Penasco, a lot of friends have gone out there and say it’s a nice place to visit. We are also having problems on the other side of the border, I am from El Paso, TX. Last week Juarez was having problems again with the cartels as well which is unfortunate. I am glad you and your family made it back home safely. Take care.

He says this is the first he's heard of violence there. I lived in Mexico for 6 years across the Sea of Cortez and still do half the year. Mexican friends of ours visited Puerto Penasco 5 years ago just after a shoot out between the government and drug cartels. They told us apartment blocks were littered with bullet holes from machine guns and helicopters. The northern Sea of Cortez is also under the control of cartels fishing totoaba. Their bladders are sought after by the Chinese and sell for up to $8,000 each. They mostly keep to themselves but there are sometimes raids by the government and violence spills out. There has been an uptick in thefts where I'm at. Worse, not far from me an American was shot dead when he heard a commotion and went outside to find a group of men stealing his car. I know one of his neighbors, who a few months ago had their dune buggy stolen out of their garage while they were inside watching TV. Since the first of the year there have been several other thefts there and now a senseless murder. I'm sure it's weighing heavily on them whether they will go back. Mexico is a beautiful place and would be even more so if they could ever get it under control. We not only lived in Mexico year-round for 6 years we ran a business and are part of the community. I've never felt threatened but it's definitely not the US. There is no 911 to call. I've got not only about myself to think about but also the safety of my wife.

Bummer that you have experienced all that! Sorry! I have a business and a house in Mexico too and thank God I have never experienced that. People ask me if I recommend going to Baja on an overland trip, my response is NO, if you don't feel comfortable don't even bother, you won't enjoy it. I also don't encourage people to visit Baja and if they do, do it with someone like Camp4Lo, they know everything about Baja.

@@OVRLNDX It's there, maybe not around you or you don't know about it. In May, 2010 I knew of 2 suicides and 4 murders. Two were Americans who killed their wives (they think there they can get away with it there), the other 2 were local Mexicans shot dead. I was always skeptical about news reporting there so I tried searching for anything on those deaths and found nothing. Most crimes go unreported. The only news is Facebook groups. Those deaths and a few more since really didn't affect us other than the fact we knew about them. These latest hit a little closer to home. Just before we left in May a delivery driver we knew quite well from out of the area disappeared and is presumed dead. A real charming guy and a personal loss. Thanks Marco. Wish you and your family the best.

Hello Marco, WOW, I’ve never been to Mexico. The scenery along that dangerous roadway was amazing, love to see it someday… My wife’s been trying for years to get me to Mexico. While living in Arizona we were only 40 miles distant, now in New Mexico we’re 52 miles away. I guess I’ll have to plan a trip as I’d like to see some different scenery. I’ve seen reference to a place called Durango in Mexico where a lot of westerns were filmed, the scenery is very rocky perfect for the iconic western movie set… I absolutely love your Jeep, it’s capable of taking you so many places. To bad the unsavory element had to cut your trip short… Safe travels
